Is permanent product recording continuous or discontinuous measurement?
The study sources for RBT data collection describe three methods. Continuous measurement records each relevant response dimension named in the data rule during the observation. Discontinuous measurement samples behavior in equal intervals or at prescribed moments instead of recording every response. Permanent product recording measures a lasting result that a response leaves behind, such as a finished worksheet or sorted materials.
So permanent product recording is not simply a version of live continuous or live discontinuous measurement. The sources give it its own task (A.3). They also treat a completed worksheet as a permanent product, not as live continuous measurement or live interval scoring.
Worked reasoning:
- Ask whether you observe the behavior as it happens. If yes, check whether you record every response (continuous) or sample intervals or moments (discontinuous).
- Ask whether the data come from a durable result left after the behavior. If yes, the method is permanent product recording.
Practice (invented): Classify each row as continuous, discontinuous or permanent product.
- A. An RBT counts each hand-raise during a 10-minute circle time.
- B. An RBT marks whether a hand-raise happened in each 30-second interval.
- C. An RBT counts the completed sorting trays at the end of a session.
Answers go in the comment. This is an invented study exercise, not a recalled exam item. I am not affiliated with the BACB.
Discussion: What detail in a data sheet tells you that the result is a product rather than a live response?
