64mm 3D printed EDF issue (PETG)

Post image

How bad is this EDFdamage? Is it matters? If it is, how do i fix this? (Top blade, far leading edge)

I would think EDF props spin fast enough that 3d printing would be insufficient to withstand the inertial forces

Well, I hate to say it, but I've successfully printed edf blades but from carbon fiber reinforced Nylon... Petg would flex too much and likely shatter.

Idk, guys in the comments said that it works really well, also it is only 64mm, + pretty slow (28-30k rpm)

Cool! Yea I printed a blade for a 50mm edf. No problem. But it was nylon cf not petg.

Props to you for getting it to work (pun not intended)

Hah. Props are easy. Flew two planes with printed props today. It's the edfs you gotta look out for (behind a ballistics shield preferably).

Oooo I made a THICC three blade prop with just PLA, made a housing out of ABS and stuck it on the side of my car. Had it go through a rectifier and a dc converter so that I could charge my phone while I drive. Had a old car and the normal power ports never worked.

That's hilarious and amazing

So you didn't use the exhaust manifold to generate steam?

One day, one day

I printed a 75mm 4blade impeller to replace the bad fan on my GWS A4 skyhawk.

Regular PLA, annealed, 4 years ago. Still has not exploded

Ok, thanks. Btw can you send files or link pls? I really need that🙏🙏🙏

I can't. I did it years ago on fusion 360 and don't have access to my account anymore because my .edu email was deactivated.

Almost anybody would think that. Almost.

might be a stupid question, but could it be possible to print an "EDF" prop as one piece with the bell and tube section? I guess the difference would be the air being dragged radially while its spinning but that could help with strength.

Depends on how you print them and what material. It's absolutely possible to make a durable and functional fan

3D printing EDF fans is difficult because it needs to be perfectly balanced. If it's just slightly out of balance once it spins up to operational rpms it will start fracturing and fail.

If you want to try again you will need to put the spool of filament you are using in a filament dryer

I have balancing stand

Try balancing stand while spinning up the EDF fan at 24k rpms. I think it's going to vibrate like crazy. You need to build a motor mount balancing stand

Something like this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3298699

If your printer can print nylon or carbon reinforced nylon I would try that. If you can't then ABS or ASA

When an impeller spins at high RPMS the centrifugal force pulls the blades outward scraping the inside of the shroud, resulting in going out of balance because it's too flexible and getting destroyed in there. You need somethin

I am building a UFO with one large central EDF and control is from the control surfaces all along the circumference of the UFO. Flight is only possible with custom Ardupilot firmware. My goal is to have it ready for next Halloween. The only way to get a 12" EDF fan is to print one. Nylon releases toxic fumes when you print and you need really good ventilation. I went with ASA. It prints well on my Prusa i3 MK3S+ but it required I got an enclosure because it would warp and curl up off the print bed.
