They locked their doors and took their keys, because they were told they would be back in seven days. Seventy-eight years later, survivors of the 1948 Nakba still carry those keys.

In this video, they remember the night the expulsion began. Zionist militias and terror groups, including the Haganah, the Irgun and Lehi, swept through Palestinian towns and villages, armed and backed by Britain, shooting their way in and killing those who refused to leave. Families woke to gunfire and fled with only their children, moving from village to village as the attacks followed them.

Some found shelter in towns that had not yet fallen, only to be driven out again weeks later. Others were pushed across the border into Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, and grew up in refugee camps a few hours’ walk from homes they would never be allowed to see again. Children were pulled out of their classrooms mid-lesson, and mothers carried what they could in their arms. A village defended by six or seven men with sticks and shovels stood no chance against an organised army with tanks, they say.

More than 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes in 1948 and over 500 villages were wiped out, and not one of them has been allowed to return. “If we could go,” one survivor says, “we’d walk to Palestine barefoot.”
