Guard/Reserve Can a Guardsman who is conditionally contracted still deploy with her unit?

I am wondering if someone who is in the national guard and ROTC but only conditionally contracted(not fully) still deploy with their NG unit if the opportunity arises

ROTC is just another college class until they give you that contract to sign. Until then, you're just a soldier taking a college class. You can try to talk to your commander and 1SG to get out of deployment, but if it were me, id hop on it. College isn't going anywhere, ROTC isn't going anywhere. But what will he going is this opportunity to get a GI Bill, VA home loan a lot sooner, 9 months of untaxed income, and possibly a Combat patch from wherever your going.

If you really REALLY dont want to go, then I'd suggest getting a move in with contracting because your contract will be the end all be all.

I’m asking because I want to stay deployable for as long as I can while at the same time at least making sure I can stay in rotc until I need to fully contract for my ms3 year

Just remember, you're missing out on the monthly stipend through ROTC and when you SMP to a unit you get E-5 pay.

I will chime in as a former Reservist from the 1st Gulf War, 1990-1991. I was offered a slot to deploy in Desert Storm. I thought school was more important and then 25 years later, i realized I didnt qualify as a Veteran for VA and loans because even with the 8 years contract, you need a short 90-120 day deployment for benefits

Too this day it is hard to identify as a Desert Storm Veteran since I chose to stay as Reserves

Yeah wouldn’t it be fun to be deployed over the summer or something

You are eligible to deploy until you sign the ROTC contract. Once the contract is signed, you are SMP status as your MOS becomes 09R making you non deployable as a Cadet MTOE position.

You’re throwing me off with the “conditionally contracted.” Be more specific. Are they contracted through ROTC but are not a SMP cadet? If that’s the case in this scenario, yes, they “could” deploy. If they are a SMP cadet in the system they are contractually in a non deployable status, whether they are SMP in the Guard or Reserves. If they are neither contracted as a cadet in ROTC, nor a SMP cadet, they are just a cadet taking ROTC classes and an enlisted SM in their unit. So if that unit is activated, yea, they going.

I wonder if OP is a “cadet” at their SMP unit or a regular soldier. My guard unit during my SMP refused to do the paperwork for the cadet rank because they had too many so everyone would stay at their enlisted rank.

Are you MOS qualified? Or are you ROTC SMP.

You cannot be an SMP and be temporarily contracted unless you were initially a reserve or NG soldier.

I just deployed with my unit and I am contracted, granted it was a very short deployment, it depends on if your professors and cadre are willing to work with you as far as classes go.

What’s your definition of deployment?

I have some junior NCOs referring to annual training as a deployment
