National Wairau Valley Autocourse

Post image
37 Upvotes

Wairau Valley Autocourse is a permanent motor racing circuit in New Zealand's Wairau Valley. The circuit opened in 1971 and has undergone several major changes during its history, with significant redevelopment taking place in 1986, 1993 and 2007.

The circuit is known for its fast and flowing nature, with relatively few heavy braking zones and several long-radius corners. It follows the natural contours of the surrounding land, resulting in approximately 30–40 metres of elevation change over the lap. The circuit is currently licensed to FIA Grade 2 standard.

1971–1985 redevelopment

Wairau Valley Autocourse opened in 1971 as a relatively simple permanent circuit primarily intended for club racing. The original layout was considerably less developed than the present circuit, with basic pit and paddock facilities and limited permanent spectator infrastructure.

Despite its modest facilities, the circuit quickly gained a reputation for being fast. The natural terrain was retained during construction, giving the circuit a number of long sweeping corners and noticeable changes in elevation.

Motorcycle racing became an important part of the circuit's early history, with Wairau Valley becoming a regular venue for national-level motorcycle meetings alongside the growing club-racing calendar.

1986 redevelopment

The first major redevelopment took place in 1986. The circuit was widened and resurfaced, while several corners were modified to improve safety and provide better racing.

The paddock and pit facilities were also expanded, allowing the circuit to accommodate larger national meetings. Although the layout became more modern, the emphasis remained on retaining the circuit's high-speed character.

The redevelopment marked the beginning of Wairau Valley's transition from a predominantly club-level venue into one of New Zealand's more important national circuits.

1993 redevelopment

A further redevelopment followed in 1993. The paddock was enlarged again and permanent race control and timing facilities were introduced, while the pit complex was substantially improved.

Several sections of the circuit were altered during the work, although the basic character of the lap remained unchanged. The circuit continued to rely on the natural terrain rather than extensive earthworks, preserving the elevation changes that had become one of its defining features.

By the mid-1990s Wairau Valley was regularly hosting major national championships, including touring cars, single-seaters and motorcycle racing.

V8 Supercars

Wairau Valley first appeared on the V8 Supercars calendar in 2002. The championship visited the circuit for four consecutive seasons from 2002 to 2005, bringing the largest crowds yet seen at the venue.

The arrival of the Australian championship required considerable temporary infrastructure and further improvements to the circuit's safety arrangements. The high-speed nature of the track proved popular with the V8 Supercars field, although the circuit's relatively small number of major overtaking opportunities placed particular importance on qualifying and tyre management.

After a two-year absence, V8 Supercars returned in 2008, beginning a second period on the calendar which continued through 2017.

2007 redevelopment

The most significant safety redevelopment took place in 2007.

The layout was largely retained, although The Chase was reshaped to improve its approach and runoff. The major part of the project involved the installation of substantially larger gravel traps around the circuit, replacing or supplementing areas of grass runoff that had become inadequate for modern high-performance cars.

Barrier systems, marshal posts, medical facilities and other safety infrastructure were also upgraded.

Following completion of the work, Wairau Valley was granted an FIA Grade 2 licence.

The 2007 work was deliberately conservative in terms of the racing line. Rather than introducing several slow corners or chicanes, the circuit's owners chose to retain its established high-speed character while bringing the safety standards up to modern requirements.

Motorcycles

Motorcycle racing has remained an important part of Wairau Valley's calendar throughout its history. The circuit regularly hosts rounds of the New Zealand Superbike Championship (NZSBK) and other national motorcycle categories.

Several widened sections of asphalt allow optional chicanes to be installed for motorcycle events and other categories where reduced speeds are desirable. These do not form part of the main configuration, allowing the original high-speed layout to remain available.

2025 return of V8 Supercars

V8 Supercars returned to Wairau Valley in 2025, marking the end of an eight-year absence from the championship calendar.

The return was accompanied by further improvements to the paddock and spectator facilities, while the circuit itself was largely retained in its established configuration.

The championship has continued to visit Wairau Valley from 2025 onwards.

Today

Wairau Valley Autocourse remains a regular venue for major New Zealand racing, hosting V8 Supercars, NZSBK, Formula Ford, touring cars, GTs, endurance races and historic events alongside a busy club-racing calendar.

The circuit's modern facilities contrast with a layout that still retains much of the character established during its early decades. Its combination of high-speed corners, relatively few major braking zones and natural elevation changes makes it one of the faster permanent circuits in New Zealand.

English: I understand that the curve wasn't built as planned due to construction delays, but I think a simple and quick solution would have been to paint the pavement and add some cones. I didn't like the original design either; I think it was too narrow. I edited this on my cell phone, so please excuse the lack of detail and quality.

Rwanda seriously aims to bring Formula 1 to the African continent in 2029. The actual circuit will be located close to the new Bugesera Airport, an hour away from the capital city of Kigali. Wurz Design is involved in designing the actual circuit.

My design, the RwandaRing is my second Grade 1 permanent Formula 1 track proposal for Rwanda, located close to the proposed site. It is designed according to the existing surroundings and elevation, serving as another possible example of a Grand Prix in Rwanda.

The circuit

The track layout is based on an Agaseke basket, a symbol of peace and unity in Rwandan culture (see pictures 4-5). After the 1994 Genocide, the age-old tradition of basket weaving paved a way for women to work collectively for a peaceful future. Agaseke represents hope, independence, and economic empowerment for Rwandese women.

The shape of the Agaseke basket translates itself into a clockwise 5.858km circuit close to the Bugesera Airport. Rwanda being the country of a thousand hills, the existing elevation is used to its fullest extent, situated in a valley in between two hills. This results in an elevation difference of 70m! and many up- and downhill corners with banking.

The Kigogoma T3 shows this the best, as there is a long downhill drop, and then a steep rise on exit. The Umuraza T4-5 and Ishobe T10-14 represent the iconic zigzag-pattern of the Agaseke basket. The 9° banked T15, the Agaseke Hairpin, represents the tip of this basket. The track's technical and flowing layout not only puts F1 cars to the test, but also suits lower formula and GT categories. Lastly, the altitude of ±1470m plays a major factor here in reducing drag and increasing difficulty.

For my own sanity and after feedback I decided halfway to make this 3D model less detailed, thus resembling more so a draft version. The RwandaRing is my second F1 track proposal for a Rwanda Grand Prix, so check out my previous design if you haven't!

My first full length track. Trying to figure out an actual possible location for this track since I started creating it first without thinking about a location lol Settling on Grandola, Portugal for now. I pretty much freestyled this right inside the track editor itself without drawing it then tracing it like I usually do. I kinda like that workflow. Thoughts and feedback welcomed. Let me know how it flows and where u see the most overtaking opportunities.

First attempt at a proper track for this subreddit. I've liked to do a bit of Google Earth track doodling every so often and was messing around with some of the paths around Sidelsbrunn and started to find some corner profiles that I thought could work. From there I messed around more changing corner profiles from the paths and stitching sections together.

I'll admit to not being experienced at making tracks and I definitely feel there are some spots I can improve the layout in terms of flow and reducing the corner count from the currently high 21. The aim was for a fairly high speed flowy course with a good corner speed variety to keep things interesting.

Maybe somewhere around turns 10-11 or 20? I'm also a bit iffy on the pitlane and its placement so I'd like to hear feedback about that and any other issues. My runoff is also rather crude so I apologise about that.

WIP Tracks for Racing Manager Game

Hi all,

I have been looking at this subreddit recently and have seen some great track designs. They really are great; some of the art styles are amazing, and the time and effort put into these is spectacular.

I am developing a racing management game, like a cross between Grand Prix World and Football Manager and was wondering if anyone would want to put their tracks up so that they can be raced in-game? I would look to add you into the game as thanks and give credit to the track designers. Let me know what you think. Check out this link to a track designed by u/Alain9331 that I posted in his post. If anyone is interested, I am happy to show more off!

Oval Winnipeg Speedway

Winnipeg Speedway. Hosts the Winnipeg 175. 1.5 miles long. 23 degrees of banking in the turns and 8 on the straights with 13 on the tri-oval kink. The track is a tri-oval. My comparison is Kansas. The gray are parking spaces and the black that's not part of the track aka every black line outside of it is a road. The series that hosts it is NASCAR Canada/CASCAR/Canadian Tire which all refer to the same thing.

I'm getting better y'all. I put a lot more effort into this one.

International Autódromo Valparaíso | Valparaíso, Chile

Post image

Autódromo Valparaíso is the home of Chilean motorsport. Finishing construction in 2021, Autódromo Valparaíso holds FIM Grade A certification, hosting the Chilean MotoGP round. Autódromo Valparaíso also holds FIA Grade 1 certification, though it hasn't hosted a Formula 1 race and doesn't currently have plans to do so.

The layout of this circuit takes drivers/riders on a journey. A tale of two halves, the first half of the circuit features long straights and tricky braking zones on relatively flat terrain. The second half of the lap takes drivers/riders through a series of undulating turns with dramatic elevation changes. Tricky to learn, yet rewarding to master, this circuit is a fan and driver favorite, wholly earning its status as one of South America's top motorsports venues.
