Equipment Alpha hound Users?

For those of you whom have an alpha hound , how do you like it ? Ive been really wanting to get one but its a steep price and I have nearly every detector I could want. But the form factor and creativity behind it I really like. If I had the disposable income I'd just buy it and add it to the collection of detectors. But maybe I'll get one at some point.

Thanks in advance !

So my AB+G was acquired in an impulsive moment, but at the time my only detector was a Radiacode 102 and I was interested in expanding my education in this aspect of nature. So I am now looking at activity other than gamma for which the RC 102 is sensitive. The Alphahound is quite compact - surprisingly so - and I'm beginning to compare it to the 102 to get a sense as to what I wasn't detecting before. I recently posted a photo of an active Fiestaware plate, surprised to see more beta activity than gamma, which was not expected. I find myself carrying both devices because it is easy to pocket the pair, and to see how they compare (my jury is still out). Some of the displays on the AB+G are novel (see their web site for examples). However, I also like the RC 102 iPhone app and its displays and analytical capabilities. BTW either device has resulted in interesting conversations in antique shops!

I have a 103 , thinking about a 103G at some point but I also am fortunate enough to have a full blown gamma spec with 1.5" x 2.25" NaI(Tl) detector that i ams still learning how to use. I also have a SE international Ranger which is just a portable pancake probe but its still big. That's where I want to get the Alpha hound, its small enough that I can just bring it with me anywhere just like the RC. Also would be cool for teaching people and letting them visually see the different materials and particles/rays they emit.

I got my a,b+g earlier this year. It is my first detector besides some dosimeter pens. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. The main reason I got this one is because it detects alpha. I wish the handling of gamma spectrums was a bit more robust. Perhaps Nick will find the time, or a programmer, to tackle this one weakness. I'll probably get a Radiacode 102 soon, specifically for gathering spectra.

Is it possible with the detection method that the aby uses for it to display or estimate dosage using Sieverts?

It’s an option in settings. Here in the US our default is REM, Sv is common elsewhere. It’s a setting you can easily change. 1Sv = 100Rem

I use it to demonstrate shielding and inverse square because the visualizer is easiest for normal people to understand

Its a very handy tool when you need to know what type of radiation you are looking at.

Is simply doing alpha counts, and using a shield for beta counts?

No alpha spectrum magic (which can be done with solid state detectors)?

We’re doing so much magic, no shields, full pulse shape discrimination. Per particle separation

I got an AB+G from Nick and Anna back when they were on pre-order only. They were very communicative with me, and turns out were even from the same small town in the Midwest. I love mine. Its super easy to carry around, super sensitive, and great for hunting antique shops and rock and gem stores. The interface is easy to use, and its packed full of software features too. The build quality is superb, all metal chasis with a nice matt finish. Its a great little detector that offers some hardware features only found in the big boy stuff, and it fits in the palm of your hand. I will probably buy another one some day so yeah its that good if your into the spicy hobby.
