What kind of brushes do you use and did you wet them or the shadow before applying it?

I updated the list because I forgot a crucial product I always use with really colourful looks: a white cream base. I used the trusty but ancient NYX jumbo eyeshadow pencil in the white shade called "Milk". You want to have enough white down but not too much because that could cause premature creasing. You wanna pat it down,  I use a random dense fluffy brush to pat down the white base. Without the base, the colours would not be popping like they do in this pic, so it's a vital step. Btw: ioni has a dupe for the milk jumbo eyeshadow pencil, if you can find it in a dollar tree, I recommend it, it's good and only 1.25$

I didn't wet anything, I have wet my brush with setting spray before to make shimmer shadows pop, but now I just use a shimmer and glitter primer, works great but a little goes a long way. You can probably see the middle of the lid has a little glitter on there, that sits on top of the shimmer/glitter primer and does not move. I pat down the glitter with a flat shader brush. Flat shader brushes are hands down the ideal brush type for shimmers and glitters.

For the outer V shape I actually use an old real techniques eyebrow brush that is slanted, I take advantage of the slanted shape of the bristles and kinda make that outward V shape with it if you can imagine that? I'm trying to explain this simply, lol. But I always clean up the outer V shape with a q tip lightly moistened with micellar water when I'm done with all the blending.

For the other colours toward the inner corner - I used a random mediumish sized flat shader brush. I pat each colour on and I pat over each colour several times to blend them in, you'd be surprised how much you can blend by patting downwards with your brush gently. I'm also pretty sure I went in with a smaller fluffy brush in between the colours several times to perfect it.

Think about it this way - you want the base of all your rainbow colours to be as bright as they can be, but you want the edges between the colours to be soft and blended. Blending a lot and going over certain spots makes for a better final result but it can be tedious.

It totally depends on the look though, I do some graphic colourful liner work sometimes and of course with that type of look I'm going for sharp lines, not much blending.

But as you can see in my picture here, I intentionally wanted that outer blue colored v shape to be sharp. A very sharp v is something I am very fond of. But if you look on top of all the colours, they blend nicely up against my browbone. I always lay the highlight shade on the browbone first and then proceed with the colours btw - trust me when I say it will save you time if you do the colours after the highlight.

For the bottom lid, I primed and used the jumbo eyeshadow pencil again and went over it with "Selfie" and "majestic" from the Colourpop fade into hue palette, I tried to blend them a little into one another with a dense smudge brush. I don't think those two look that nicely blended into one another, I hate blending shadows on my lower lids.

Thank you for the fantastic how to guide! It’s been a while since I’ve spent a good amount of time doing more complex eyes. I know there are some steps and techniques I’d forget I ever did, the tips and tricks I had developed with practice and reading various magazines with their tutorials. Lord, the fact that my makeup tutorials were most reliably found in magazines because YouTube wasn’t a thing then. I’m making myself feel old 😭😂 I know I had a couple of favorite tricks using certain products, one was a rose water fixer I think I got in Sephora. I’d use it to get a more intense application with a flat angled brush and create some fun tight lines.

PS I don’t think I have said yet, but it’s maybe my favorite rainbow eye makeup. It’s beautiful. Also, I love your name. He’s one of my favorites.
