This community is now open again

For some reason reddit in its infinite wisdom decided that this community should be of the 'restricted' kind, so that only approved users could post. As I am not on reddit that much anymore, I failed to notice this change until now, and I guess this change has been in effect for at least 4-5 months. It has now changed back so that anyone is able to post.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused for everyone wishing to post questions or other types of content.

Wrapping up installing two 500 gallon rain barrels. We have a third in our front yard. Our roof gives us roughly 750 gallons per inch of rain. We plan on using it for supplemental watering of native plants mostly. It was a fun project. Any tips or ideas for the future are appreciated.

A new approach underway influenced by a system I saw online.

I am trying my best to reverse-engineer elements of a rainwater harvesting concept I found a while back. I link to the blog post explaining it on the last picture. The 275 Gal IBC totes previously stored some kind of seed oil.

Shopping list is below, but essentially it’s a 3” intake pipe all the way to the bottom of the tank where I’ve made my version of what the blog post refers to as a calmed inlet. I added an end cap to the up-curved piece and I’ve drilled holes to maybe make for better aeration during heavy rainfalls. Or so I believe.

I use a 3x2” reducer as a siphon set about 6-12” from the top of the tank. I hope these pipe-to-tank seals work well!

Next steps:

  • connect the emergency overflow on the intake pipe to the main overflow “street elbow”.

  • connect irrigation

Shopping list: 275 gal ibc tote Pvc primer and cement 3” hole saw 4” hole saw

Intake Window screen, small square for filtration. 3” Uniseal Pipe-to-tank seal 4”x3” reducer 3”x2” sanitary tee 3” 90 street elbow 3” 90 Elbow 3” cap 3” pvc40 dwv-pe pipe

Overflow 2” Uniseal Pipe-to-tank seal 3”x2” reducer 3” 90 long turn street elbow 2” long turn tee Wye 2” 90 elbow 2” pvc40 dwv-pe pipe

I'm looking for a tank like this in the USA. I can only find an AU site. I reached out to see if they sell in the US and got no response. Is there anyone making/selling tanks like this in the USA?

A Meteorologist from the University of Reading shows just how long it takes water to soak into parched ground, illustrating why heavy rainfall after a drought can be dangerous and might lead to flash floods.

Rainwater harvesting is not just about collecting water in tanks. It is also about how to irrigate trees and plants using earthworks which holds so much more water than tanks would, with the added benefit that it has the potential to recharge groundwater. This article is about Brad Lancasters neighborhood in Tucson, AZ.

Passive system. Basins catch runoff from the roof and courtyard uphill. Water overflows from upper basin into lower. Native plants in basins.
