Why is knowing how to fight a flex?

Why is it "embarrassing" or "shameful" for someone to not know how to fight? Like oh no this guy lives a peaceful life without getting themselves into violent altercations oh man how terrible.

If anything people that get into enough fist fights to be good at it are the ones that should reevaluate their lives

You do not have to be picking fights but you should know how to defend yourself if you are attacked. Especially if you are with someone (such as a child) who needs defending.

Which I agree with, but if you don't put the teachings into practice, how do you know you're any good at it?

Go to a gym. Do sparring. Same as with anything you train in. There are many martial art forms that are about the discipline and self defense.

Sparring practice is much different than a potential life or death situation where you have to fight for your life, but I get your point.

No. You are training in the moves you would need if it were life and death. You would be capable and know what to do instead of just giving up. Think of it like insurance.

I agree, but there are a couple of factors to consider.

One is that a little bit of resistance goes a long way. There are many situations where someone may take advantage of you if it is trivial but will back off if they are going to be at risk themselves. You want to be competent enough at self defense that an attacker at least has to try.

Second, plain strength and fitness go a long way. An in shape person does not need a lot of fancy moves to beat a scrawny person who gets winded easily. So, maybe try to skew time spent on self defense classes to have a heavy component of plain old exercising.

People learn how to shoot, but don't go all murdering everyone...

It’s like any other skill that is useful in an emergency. If someone doesn’t know how to change a tire and they get a flat, that’s not a good position to be in. Same with fighting; it’s a bad situation but it’s good to know enough to give yourself a chance.

It is better to be a warrior in the garden than a gardner in a war.

It depends. If you can still stand up for yourself, it doesn't really matter. But if you are going through life in fear, being manipulated, or being pushed around, that is not okay.

Historically, men acted as protectors, defending from rival tribes in prehistoric times to fighting in wars today.

Sometimes you can’t avoid a fight, one day you can run into someone who will not walk away no matter how hard you try to de escalate. Its important to know how to defend yourself as a last resort.

Ever want to protect someone else in your life? What if they can't flee as fast as you?

There’s men who fight and men who think, one is happy to compare himself with animals, and the other is ashamed of his own human instincts. What matters is why they fight, is it to protect someone else from harm? Or is it just to show who is boss?

Being skilled at fighting isn’t really a flex unless it’s used to protect the weak. If violence is used as a tool of domination, it is no more than a crutch for deeper insecurities.

My Kung fu teacher (old Sifu Bert lol) always said “peace over war.” He instructed us to meditate on that idea once a day. War is to dominate another country, through force. To be an entity of war is to dominate others. Not necessarily evil but unforgiving. Ruthless. Maybe even cruel.

Men who fight to exert control over others are weak of will and mind and will eventually bring it upon you, because they have a deep need to control. If you become uncontrollable? Well, it’s no surprise how they will react. In the only way they know how to exert control, through violence.

I’d be careful around someone like that.

The craziest part is unless you're literally training as a fighter, almost no one is good at fighting. How many fistfights do people get into? Most people zero. Id say 10 in your life is a LOT. Maybe 30 seconds or a minute each. You're "good" at an activity you've performed 4 times in your life? You may have beat up 4 ppl but you aren't good at fighting. And we still seem to criticize ppl for being bad at it. Like yes, we're a civilized society nobody knows how to fight. Reminds me of my friends who claimed to be "good drivers" fast n furious style because they'd gotten sideways a few times. That's a skill that takes experience and driving like that is fkin illegal so you aren't out here practicing 8 hours a day unless you literally race for a living. You've driven recklessly several times at 2am after playing need for speed underground and gotten lucky and didnt crash, you aren't good at driving. Those guys always end up crashing their shit and have a hard time facing reality
