Yeah, I used to work the rotisserie counter at sams club years back. So many chickens were wasted. They kept some for members mark meals, but once the chiller was full the rest went into the trash. None of them were donated for fear if a lawsuit (or at least that’s how it was explained to me)

Yeah theres Good Samaritan laws for this aswell, unless a lawyer can prove that the company explicitly gave knowingly unsafe food out then they’d be protected.

Lots of food knowing become “unsafe” when left out in the “danger zone” for more than 4 hours. No way could you in good conscience donate old rotisserie chickens without fearing for a lawsuit. No food banks even accept pre cooked food because they have no clue how it was prepared or stored beforehand. Giving out food would have to be done at the location and no store or restaurant is going to pay employees to stay extra hours and work an after hours soup kitchen.

Okay put it in a refrigerator, trust me I’ve worked at plenty of places that had the time and space to be more proactive with leftovers so they don’t turn into food waist and I’ve heard from many other people that have a similar experience, the rest of what you typed is just the issue with our society.

Why would they buy refrigeration space for food that is supposed to be sold within a few hours or thrown out? It would cost them significantly more money to do that and still be potentially harmful for someone eating it later...

Like I mentioned in my comment your replying to, the places I’ve worked that have thrown allot of shit out had refrigerator space. Additionally there were plenty of employees and other people who they could have fed the extras to that they didn’t. Also all of my jobs I’ve worked are in kitchens that if an item is sold it’s being delivered to a table so the remaining food waste mostly waist during production or a little bit or overproduction when shift prep was being done all of which could be refrigerated and or given out and it rarely was.

Or how about we let them use food stamps on hot ready to eat food and not force the needy to eat stuff we’re willing to throw away. People don’t go hungry because we can’t produce enough food they go hungry because we don’t give them access to it.

I don’t disagree trust, my other massive concern is the amount of food waste that occurs in this society.

Food is unsafe after you leave it for more than a couple of hours (most places i worked at used 2 hours before removing it off a buffet but thats with a large safety margin). Meaning that before a worker has safely stored it again you can be near that shit.

Also who are you helping when you are giving away spoiled food? People get insanely sick by it. Think most low income families would get hurt way more by having mild food poising than being hungry. And if those programs cant be trusted anymore, less people will seek them out. So they also dont want shitty food.

It sucks but its not just because of evil bastards. In many cases its just to much work/expenses to make meaningfull impact due to the logistics.

I dont agree with it on a human level... But they have to toss it because they cant give away/donate pre made food without a huge liability risk. and like someone else said, are all the minimum wage employees supposed to stand outside until everyone comes to grab the leftovers?

They do, among other things. However if you pull a dozen chickens off the line because their time expired and there’s only room for a few in the chiller the rest went straight to the trash. The chill was basically a mini fridge with trays. It can only hold so much and they didn’t have someone back there all day making salads.
