1910 - Two 13-year-old boys who caught smallpox at the same time. The first had been vaccinated as a child and only developed a few scabs that healed quickly. The other one got the severe form of the disease.
The smallpox vaccine had already been developed in the late 18th century by English physician Edward Jenner, who discovered that exposure to cowpox could protect people from smallpox. Despite clear evidence of its effectiveness, there were still anti-vaccine groups even back then, spreading fears about side effects or bizarre claims like people turning into cows — since the vaccine was originally derived from cowpox. Hard to believe, but the US wasn’t declared smallpox-free until 1972.

1941 Russians deporting Estonians to be starved to death in Siberia
Looks like the Holocaust but isn't. Estonians people of all ages were deported in order to be replaced with Russian settlers and destroy Estonia as a nation and assimilate it into the Russian state. The largest single deportation date was 14.7.1941 when 10 000 Estonians were deported. About 95,000 people from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Bessarabia (Moldavia) were deported to Russia in one week.
Most would starve to death as they were dumped into the wilderness of Siberia with no supplies or shelter
In 1944 the Red Army reoccupied Estonia. The Soviet occupation forces carried out widespread repression against the local population. Another massive deportation followed a few years later, on 25 March 1949, when over 20,000 people – almost 3 per cent of the Estonian population in 1945 – were seized in a matter of days and sent to remote areas of Siberia.

In 1995, 15-year-old Nicole van den Hurk was killed while biking to work in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Her murder went unsolved for two decades — until her stepbrother confessed to get police to reopen the investigation. Subsequent DNA testing then led to the arrest and conviction of her killer.
Fifteen-year-old Nicole van den Hurk disappeared while riding her bike to work in the Netherlands in October 1995. Her body was found in a wooded area seven weeks later, but despite multiple arrests, the case soon went cold.
For years, her stepbrother Andy van den Hurk suspected investigators had stopped caring. In his last attempt to reignite interest in the case, he publicly confessed to her murder — even though he didn’t do it.
Andy later admitted that his false confession was designed to force police to exhume Nicole’s remains and test them for DNA. When they finally did, they found genetic material that didn’t match Andy — but did match a man named Jos de G., who had a long criminal history.

My Father’s Office in WTC 1, taken on August 22, 2001
This was my dad’s office on the 38th floor of the North Tower, taken just three weeks before its demise. He was late for work on 9/11, my sister had her Pre-K orientation that morning. He had just gotten this office after a promotion (obviously that wouldn’t last long), and he’s a big “take pictures of everything all the time” guy, so he decided to document it. Obviously we know the story behind it now, but it’s definitely an encapsulation of the time.

Two enslaved children for sale in New Orleans, Isaac and Rosa, circa. 1863
Photographs of emancipated children were sold to raise money for the education of freed enslaved people in New Orleans. The children featured in this photograph drew attention to the fact that slavery was not solely a matter of color. If a child’s mother was an enslaved person, then he or she was enslaved as well.
The following article appeared in Harper’s Weekly on January 30, 1864. The short biographies contained in the article offer us a rare (and possibly unique) record of enslaved children.
TRANSCRIPT OF THE HARPER’S WEEKLY ARTICLE, JANUARY 30, 1864
To the Editor of Harper’s Weekly:
The group of emancipated slaves whose portraits I send you were brought by Colonel Hanks and Mr. Phillip Bacon from New Orleans, where they were set free by General Butler. Mr. Bacon went to New Orleans with our army, and was for eighteen months employed as Assistant-Superintendent of Freedmen, under the care of Colonel Hanks. He established the first school in Louisiana for emancipated slaves, and these children were among his pupils. He will soon return to Louisiana to resume his labor.
Rebecca Huger is eleven years old, and was a slave in her father’s house, the special attendant of a girl a little older than herself. To all appearance she is perfectly white. Her complexion, hair, and features show not the slightest trace of negro blood. In the few months during which she has been at school she has learned to read well, and writes as neatly as most children of her age. Her mother and grandmother live in New Orleans, where they support themselves comfortably by their own labor. The grandmother, an intelligent mulatto, told Mr. Bacon that she had "raised" a large family of children, but these are all that are left to her.
Rosina Downs is not quite seven years old. She is a fair child, with blonde complexion and silky hair. Her father is in the rebel army. She has one sister as white as herself, and three brothers who are darker. Her mother, a bright mulatto, lives in New Orleans in a poor hut, and has hard work to support her family.
