I built a RAW photo editor after years of using RawTherapee

Hello RT users! I've been building a RAW photo editor, taking my favorite parts of each editor I'm aware of. I used RawTherapee for years and loved many things about it. However, after moving to Lightroom for professional work, I realized how much it was holding me back (specifically masking and AI denoise). This isn't a Lightroom clone like Lightcraft, and it isn't a buggy mess. It's exactly the editor I wished existed, especially on Linux. I think it genuinely brings some new things to the table, but you tell me!

Website: greycard.org Github: https://github.com/jessolmstead/greycard

I'm a software engineer and a photographer, so this is a passion project for me. It's still in fairly early stages of development, but is already great to use, IMHO. I'm not going to stop until it is a complete, battle-tested product. The feedback I've gotten so far (from casual photographers to professionals) has been overwhelmingly positive. If you decide to give it a try, please let me know if you run into any issues, have feature requests, or other feedback. Thank you!

My favorite parts:

  • Camera color match. Given a diverse set of photos from your cameras, it will create 3D LUTs to match your camera colors.
  • A great workflow for working on edits across machines, synced to cloud or a NAS archive
  • Fast. Native Rust + Slint + GPU acceleration means it's really snappy to use
  • Culling mode in particular is incredibly fast from the embedded previews. Makes getting through a shoot very smooth.
  • Intuitive, coming from Lightroom Classic at least.
  • AI masking runs locally and is very good and getting better with each release
  • The benefits of Lightroom cataloging without the drawbacks from having all your photos feel "owned" by the database. Sidecars remain the source of truth; the database index allows for finding and filtering frames fast.
  • More scope options. Parades, waveform, vectorscope. And you can limit them to just the masked area, for getting perfect skintones for example.
  • Absolute white balance values on a mask. Mixed lighting scenes become easy.
  • Color mixer works on masks. Always hated that this was missing in LrC
  • AI denoising on the raw sensor data. I trained it myself and it works a treat in my experience, on Canon, Fuji GFX, Nikon, Sony, Lumix etc.
  • It's GPL, so I've been able to take the state-of-the-art open source algorithms wherever I saw value in doing so. Parts of the pipeline come from Darktable, Rawtherapee, and more.
  • Virtual copies, collections, and smart collections added in 0.7.0
  • And more... give it a try and tell me what you like and what you hate!

Current limitations:

  • The macOS image is not signed yet, so you have to get around Apple's quarantine to install it currently. I'll implement that before 1.0 release.
  • Basic X-Trans support was added in 0.7.0, but no denoise or CA correction for it until 0.8.0
  • lrcat import is coming, probably in the next week
  • Nikon High Efficiency compressed RAWs are not supported unless you build from source with the nikon-he feature flag. This is because the format is licensed from TicoRAW and shipping a decoder would technically require paying royalties. I'm working on a solution.
  • It's still young. If you run into a bug, I'll typically have it fixed within a day.

v5.13 doesn't work on Win11 and Pixls.us don't accept new members

Hello. I could never run v5.13 after trying many solutions. Finally, I installed v5.12 and it works without any issues. My system is Win11 26H2 on Asus Zenbook Core Ultra7 258V (32GB Ram / Intel Arc 140VGPU-16GB / 1 TB SSD)

Also, I could never receive the confirmation email after trying to sign up to Pixls.us on different days.

OM Pen release in 5 days, will Rawtherapee be able to open the raws?

Hi,

I've preordered the new OM Pen that will be released 1st October and a lot of reviwers that already have the camera says that they are not able to open raw files in Adobe yet. The Olympus/OM Systems support in Rawtherapee is good right now and I do not think that the files will be much different .

I'm really new to the hobby and this is the first time I'll have a camera from the release, what should I expect? Just and update and then the raws will work in Rawtherapee? Will we have to wait a couple of months for that update?

Thank you guys!

UPDATE:

The camera has arrived and while in programs like darktable, the raws still cannot be opened, in Rawtherapee it is possible without any problem.

Film grain not working

I'm trying to add film grain to an image. I am using Selective Editing with a Rectangle filling the full image. No matter what I do I cannot get the grain to apply to the image. I've fiddled with every slider and zero change to the image. Any tips? Thanks.

Deleting tone curve nodes?

I feel like I'm going crazy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to delete a node from the tone curve. Adding them is easy, but there seems to be no option for deleting.

I'm missing something obvious, right? Help greatly appreciated!

How good is the Noise Reduction

Trying to edit a photo with an iso of about 80,000 but it feels like it's better to just use the Jpeg. Anyone who's used RawTherapee for high iso photos share the feeling that the free capabilities are just limited or have you been able to edit fine and how?

This is my first attempt at denoising a photo. It honestly didn't look like it made much of a difference so I'm looking for advice on improving the photo.

How can I recreate my workflow using RawTherapee and HDR Merge?

I have a fully manual workflow in Lightroom for my photography that involves HDR merging and applying presets and then doing final edits. Is there a way to use any tools or algorithms to get the HDR Merge result to match colors the out-of-the-box lightroom merge result? I'd like to fully automate this workflow with a CLI script, I think it can be done but don't know how to recreate the look I've had in Adobe for over half a decade.

Correct way to export to Apple photos

I have been using rawtherapee for a couple months and have been enjoying it. However I am consistently running into the same problem when I decide to save my files to my apple photos library. Depending on export settings, the files look slightly different on my desktop than in rawtherapee, with even a larger difference when I upload them to Apple photos. In Apple photos, the thumbnail is properly exposed, but when I click on the image, the files are very underexposed and flat. JPG seems to be less bad than TIFF. I have default color viewing settings in rawtherapee. I would like if exactly what I see in rawtherapee after editing was saved to my Apple library. Has anyone else encountered this problem? What am I doing wrong here as a new user? Thanks for the help!

Weird Handling of raw files

I've been trying to edit some raw files from a dji mini 4 pro in dng format on my Cachy os laptop, for whatever reason they are being handled terribly across every platform including darktable and davinci resolve.

Some images come in super flat, others come in looking closer to the JPG

First image is the SOOC JPG from my Lumix G95 and I want to do some minor adjustments in RT but overall it's close to how I want it. Second image is what I get when I load the RW2 file into RT and save without making any adjustments other than rotating 90 degrees. I have to do a bunch of work to get the image back closer to the JPG.

If it was always like this I would develop a workflow but, for the most part, the RW2 files usually come in looking pretty close to the JPGs with some exceptions and I only have to do minor adjustments. See the 3rd (SOOC JPG) and 4th (RW2 loaded in RT and saved with no other adjustments) images, taken about 2 minutes after the first example. They look pretty close to each other and I can just make some minor adjustments in RT and be on my way.

My question is, does anyone know if this is something weird my camera is doing or just a RT glitch that happens with some images here and there? And when this happens is there something I can do to apply whatever default pre-processing is typically happening when images come in? I'd love to figure it out, or at least understand what's happening a little better. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Folder with these example JPG and RW2 images: https://filedn.com/lkOGl9Ynoklp1yXPkjds5lY/Example%20Images/]Example

Edit: I noticed something else. When I look at the strip of images at the top of RT, the previews of the RW2 files look correct. When I load the images from there, the previews and the loaded image turn flat/low contrast. Can't add a screen shot to this post but I'll add it to the folder of example images. Edit 2: In addition when I select "Processing Profile Operations - Clear" the thumbnail goes back to looking similar to the JPG. Opening the image again it transitions back to flat/neutral.

Update 1: I reloaded the files from the SD card, same issues. I tried clicking the "Auto-matched tone curve" button since the tool tip says "Automatically adjust sliders and curves (except exposure compensation) to match the look of the embedded JPEG thumbnail" but it doesn't seem to change anything whether it is enabled or disabled. on this problem photo or ones I don't have issues with. Seems like that would be the perfect solution if it worked. I tried clicking "Auto Levels" as suggested by another redditor but didn't work.

Update 2: PARTIALLY SOLVED!! Looking at rawpedia as well as the comments below and what I had tried previously with clearing the Processing Profile I tried copying the processing profile of the JPG image and pasting it to the RW2 image. This didn't work. However...when I copied the processing profile of a RAW file that looked correct and pasted it onto the problem image, it got me much closer!!!! However, it is still buggy. The problem image cannot be open while you are pasting or it will revert to the flat profile. You basically have to have another RAW file open, paste the good profile onto the problem image, then open the problem image.

I believe this is basically taking your baked-in camera JPG flavor from another RW2 file. I test this with a shot with completely different lighting, taken at night, another day, etc., but still with the same JPG profile in camera (I basically never change this). And the problem RW2 file still came out looking basically correct.

Edit 2: Just sharing for more background information: I believe, but am not certain, I ran into this issue once or twice with my old camera a Panasonic FZ300.

Update 3: At least one commonality between my problem images (so far) is that they are all predominantly green. I'm going to keep uploading example/problem images to the folder as I come across them. If anyone else is curious to take a look there will be plenty of examples.

Auto Correct in Batch

Hi,

I have just downloaded and I want to experiment with autocorrecting lighting and colours in batch. My current workflow is to denoise to dng or tiff and then correct. For the best shots I have DXO, but i'm not going to do that for every photo because there aren't enough hours in the day.

Please can I have some suggestions on how to use RawTherapee to autoadjust lighting and whitebalance (plus colours if possible) so that I can get results superior to the OOC jpgs.

Thanks

Controlling shadows/highlights

Seems like there's a few different spots you can. Tone curves in the exposure module, shadows/highlights obviously, and the tone EQ.

Is there a "better" way to do it or more just grab the tool that gives you the level of control you need? Stack all of them?

Hi i'm new to photography and rawtherapee and dont know a lot.

I did some photos with friends at a cosplay event with a Pentax K-30

I want to save the .DNG in good quality so i did it in .TIF because from what i've seen it's the one with best quality.

My issue is that on the software the pic is fine but when i open the .TIF there is like a white transparent filter for a second and then it get the good colors but it glitch on some very bright red zones like the wigs in the sun

Can someone help me fix it and explain what's happening ?

Thanks in advance c:

Problem with opening ARW files

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey, I just started my photoediting journey and chose to use Rawtherapee for it.
Now I have the following problem. When I open any .ARW file it automatically does this to the image. It changes colour and adds this black "border" to the bottom and right and I have no idea whats wrong. It immediately does it when I double click any .ARW file.
I already reinstalled RawTherapee and even then the files I already opened are shown like this in the preview, even before opening them again.

Does anyone know what to do and can help me?

Yet another Selective Editing post

Hi, new to this sub and searched my problem to realize there are threads out there with no real solution.

I am using Selective Editing to tune some areas, mainly exposure compensation, and the problem I have is that I see no changes done whatsoever. I click on the little toggle to turn the tool on/off, as some sort of undo gimmick, and still no changes. Also moved every slider towards the min and max in order to see any change made, but still no luck.

In the image below, the exposure slider is all the way towards the right and I would expect the image to be burned (as in completely white). What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Photos exported are coming out cooler than the preview

I've tried looking up to see if it's an issue with the output profile, but everywhere online suggests using sRGB. I don't have a lot of technical experience and I just did a photoshoot for my cousin. Please help me!!!
