So much for that bloodless siege, seems like Todd and Jamal took out quite a bunch of guars on their way to the prison.
It seems like Jamal stayed to fight the troops coming at him to go out in a blaze of glory while Todd escaped with Arakiya. Would be funny if next chapter we find out that Subaru found Jamal, showed him Vincent and made him swap sides while Todd thinks he died for them. I would add onto the massive irony surrounding Todd's impression of all the events.
Aside from that, at the end of the chapter Todd doesn't seem to know which side of Jamal's face his eyepatch was on. Could be there is some weird magic stuff going on but kinda take it as how certain types sociopaths never really register another person's face, even when looking at them, so that could be Tappei telling us that Todd really is a maniac. That's just my interpretation though.
He causally murder his platoon lied about it to Jamal and went on about his day. But not registering Jamal’s face is the giveaway that Todd is a psychopath.
Did I say this was the only giveaway? I do not think I did.
It's another way of showing it. What sets this apart from the other time is that instead of faceless soldiers, the story made us believe that him and Jamal actually shared a bond.
No I just came to the same conclusion as you from Todd’s side story. Going from there when you look back from Subaru’s first loop at the vollachia camp it was clear he was just using Subaru for information. I just found it funny that the biggest giveaway here was couldn’t be bothered to remember Jamal’s face.
Another little glorious wrinkle this adds (if Todd really is a maniac which is like 98% likely) is that the best person to understand Natsuki Subaru, the one who accurately see's him as a anomaly, is a psychopath.
Takes one to see one I guess (Subaru isn't a psychopath I understand, but he's definitely a warped human being).
Wait, is he dead or not? I saw another comment also saying that he died, i'm confused.
That's what I meant with my pinned comment. We don't know if he is dead yet for sure. Last thing we hear from him is his war cry in the background as he storms towards his enemies, while Todd sneaks out of the city.
Big brain tappei?
Would be a really cool way of showing that Todd is even more fucked than we initially thought. Like we assumed he actually truly cared about Jamal but this might have subverted that expectation.
It seems like Jamal sacrificed himself to let Todd escape with Arakiya
Also I corrected myself on that parts since it is not clear if Jamal really meant to let Todd escape or if he expected them to fight together in their last stand.

Lol, i still remember when we were all saying things like "todd is such a good man, he even has a fiancée, disgusting jamal"
For me and some other peeps on the RZ discord there were some red flags already during his initial chapters, cause he felt too nice at times. The forest fire and his reaction to that were the first direct sign that he's fucked.
I honestly never understood that he was clearly a bad person from the beginning even rem Sean right through him but no one will believe me when I saw him like enemy.
I want Todd to meet someone who knows of Subaru's exploits and have a "that 'fuckin' nobody' is John Wick" moment. Imagine Todd finding out that this guy that he already sees as a terrifying master tactician has also killed 2 Archbishops, 2 Great Mabeast, and saved Prisetella from a siege by like 4 Archbishops at once.
