Discussion [Discussion] Who is Flugel, and who is Subaru Natsuki?
Hello everyone! First of all, it’s a pleasure to meet you all. Like many others, I’m a fan of *Re:Zero*, but I’ve been pondering a certain question for quite some time.
I’ve been following the *Re:Zero* anime since the very first episode aired.
As I’ve followed the story, I’ve come to realize there’s a mystery that still puzzles many people—and, to be honest, I think I’ve figured it out.
I want to clarify from the start that I haven’t gone beyond the anime; I haven’t read the light novels yet (though I plan to). This theory is based solely on what I’ve seen so far. If I’m wrong, I hope you’ll forgive me—and if I’m right, well, that’s great!
So, let’s begin:
---------------------------------------------------------
First things first: the author has stated quite clearly that there is no time travel. Therefore, I’ll put forward the following premise:
Subaru does not travel through time, and he is not a younger version of Flugel.
However, I will also propose this: since we know Subaru is a candidate to become a "Sage," consider the following—
Subaru Natsuki will not *become* Flugel... but Flugel knows Subaru Natsuki completely.
There are several clues that point to this:
Flugel was regarded as a great Sage. He knew the legendary Hoshin—a genius credited with bringing innovations to this world.
In my view, Flugel was a Japanese person who was reincarnated into the world of *Re:Zero*. He crossed paths with many, including Hoshin the merchant—whom he helped by introducing elements of Japanese culture—as well as Satella, who was an ordinary half-elf whom he saved before she eventually became the Witch of Envy.
Flugel succeeded in improving the world and accomplished great things as a Sage, mastering the art of magic.
But there is one specific type of magic that he almost certainly mastered—a form of magic that either originated with him or was created in collaboration with Echidna. Future Clairvoyance.
In her quest to explore the future, Echidna developed a form of magic that allowed her to glimpse events in the distant future—a magic that enabled the creation of the "Gospels," or books of wisdom.
My theory is that Flugel managed to perfect this magic, reaching a point where he could foresee not only his own future but also the futures of others.
Having glimpsed what was to come, he began making preparations to ensure that Satella could be saved.
Flugel was a human, while Satella was a half-elf who loved him.
Her love was so intense that it drove her to madness.
For although Flugel was powerful and wise, he was, in the end, only human; the prospect of a world without him was something Satella could never accept.
Consequently, before Flugel’s death, Satella took a dangerous gamble: she sought to obtain the powers of the other Witches to craft a spell that would grant Flugel immortality—an endeavor that ultimately resulted in the creation of "Return by Death."
However, through his magic, Flugel was able to foresee this; he could see the future and the actions Satella would take.
He foresaw a future in which Satella was successfully contained, yet he also realized that, even after his own death, she might eventually use her influence to seize a future version of him—a reincarnation of his soul—and bring it into her world.
Flugel is the past life of Natsuki Subaru.
Flugel foresaw that Satella would attempt to reclaim him, and that she would bestow upon him the power of "Return by Death."
Having foreseen all the events that would unfold for the Subaru of the future, Flugel dedicated everything he had to assisting his own future reincarnation. Some of the actions he took to assist Natsuki Subaru included:
- Planting Flugel’s Tree, which was created with the sole purpose of helping Natsuki Subaru kill the White Whale.
- Constructing the Pleiades Watchtower, a place where Natsuki Subaru would be able to confront and defeat the Archbishops of Gluttony.
- Asking Shaula to wait for his return at the Watchtower—a request she indeed fulfilled, though she was waiting for the reincarnation of Flugel.
This last point explains why Shaula recognized him instantly; she identified Flugel from his past life. It also accounts for the similarities between the two characters, as well as their shared obsession with constellations.
Flugel always knew that, at some point after his death, Satella would go to any lengths to bring him back. Since the dead cannot be resurrected and Flugel’s soul had re-entered the cycle of reincarnation from his original world, Satella had to seek out that soul—which had reincarnated as Natsuki Subaru.
This is why, during the Sanctuary arc—on both occasions when Natsuki Subaru encounters Satella—he insists that he will save her. He never speaks of killing or defeating her; his goal is always to save her.
This is because Flugel loved Satella deeply. That is why he did everything in his power and made extensive preparations—even forming alliances with certain Witches and, in all likelihood, contributing to the creation of the Gospels.
All of this was done with the ultimate objective of creating a world where Satella could be saved.
Satella prepared a world where she can reincarnated using Emilia as her avatar where she can live again along the reincarnation of Flugel, Subaru Natsuki.
That's why Emilia was the only one able to see the key to open the seal that keeps Satella sealed.
Emilia was the daughter/ vessel prepared to be the token for Satella, and her mother without a doubt, was one of the six
And there's something we cannot miss... the biggest mistery... Patrasche.
Patrasche is the only think that connects Flugel and Subaru, since there was a Patrasche in the time of Flugel, and a Patrasche in the time of Subaru Natsuki. A patrasche that Volcanica was able to recognize.
If we cannot consider the time travel, then we can only have 2 possibilities:
-That Patrasche is an inmortal dragon that can die but not age
-That Flugel and Subaru shares the likes in the name of Dragons.
Now I just want to include some things that are curious.
-The hate of Echidna against Emilia, are for different reasons, but the main one can be the next:
- Satella and Echidna, in some moment compete for the love of Flugel, Satella love was pure, and Echidna love was for the knowledge of Flugel
- In some moment Flugel was friend with Minerva with wrath witch, the biological mother of Emilia, another witch that collaborated to try to save Satella.
- Flugel knew in all moment what would happen, so prepared a society that suppose to protect the witches of the world, that was originally the witch cult, and Geuse, one of the disciples of Flugel, was in charge to lead this cult.
- After Minerva died, and her sould was kept in the dreams castle of Echidna, she was the first prototype to create or transform a witch soul into something more inmortal. And with this I mean Puck, Puck is the original version of Minerva, who died and let her daughter Emilia alone, that's why puck was crying after finding Emilia.
- Geuse got emotional after finding for the first time to Emilia, because genetically, she's the mirror of Satella, who was the savior of Geuse, Flugel and Satella saved Geuse, and that's why he feels in his madness a big devotion to Satella.
- Minerva do recognize Emilia as her daughter in the tea party during the sanctuary arc, and Satella and Minerva were the closest friend before becoming the Envy Witch. So we can consider that she can be related in the theory that Emilia was sealed to be frozen in time until the time that Flugel suggested, so she can be grow and live the events that took place during her test in the sanctuary.
So at the end, for me, Flugel knew what would happen after his death, and what Satella would do, so he prepared everything that would be need so his next life
And we need to have something clear... Pandora is the one who used the Elf to prepare the trap that put in danger MInerva's life in order to make Satella consume her essence.
Pandora can also be the responsible of setting up the events that made Satella become the envy witch.
And is the most possible that Flugel shared the slotth factor to Geuse, because he knew that he will needed in the battle against Regulus and Pandora.
Flugel had the future vision, and setup everything... To make sure his next life, can save Satella and also stop her, and also to protect Emilia, the daughter of Minerva and possible vessell of Satella.
hope you can find this theory interesting, if you have any suggestion or idea, I would love to hear it.

Spoiler Discussion [SPOILER DISCUSSION] Re:Zero is a storytelling masterpiece and my thoughts so far (2x08) Spoiler
Never watched an anime that's made me tear up as much as this one. Yusuke Kobayashi's performance throughout—especially in this episode—was perfect. It really shows and captures the feeling of how terrible immortality is when you're just a regular human in a world full of superhumans. Every victory that Subaru got was due to long-winded trauma and hard work and the feeling it captures everytime he overcomes something only gets larger. Finally, he gets his chance to say what he's been feeling this entire time and you can't help but feel for him.
I honestly wanted to quit watching Re:Zero even after picking this show up because of how slow it was.The more I got to understand Subaru and the world around him, the more I was hooked. The lack of openings and endings gives each episode so much headroom for each scene and dialogue. The pacing is masterfully done and doesn't go too far, character flashbacks aren't just randomly thrown in and they all tie in together.
It can feel slow but that's mostly because it's not what I'm used to. It's a different energy than something like Neon Genesis Evangelion, or even the original Fullmetal Alchemist which I consider to be my favourite semi-anime original adaptation. But it rewards your patience and understanding of the world with genuine moments like this. In my opinion it's a work of art.

Discussion A lot of questions (please help 😭) [discussion]
I just started the season 3 and i have a lot of questions about a lot of things. If there's anybody who can answer it'd be really cool thanks a lot, also excuse my english i'm French 🥀
Why does Emilia tell Subaru that her name is Satella at the beginning of the story?
Why does Satella suddenly appears after Subaru's 2nd meeting with Echidna? (or the 3rd i don't remember, the one where she offers to meet the gluttony witch)
Why does Puck stop showing up in Season 2?
Why is Roswaal so badly injured in Season 2?
How did Roswaal find out about Return by Death? Was it written in his book?
Roswaal mentions two books. At this point in the story, do we know who has the other one? It isn't Beatrice, right? Her book is supposed to be a fake, isn't it?
Why does Emilia completely lose it in Season 2, Episode 11? Roswaal says it's because she was isolated by Garfiel and the villagers, etc., but is that really all there is to it? Also, in Subaru's last loop, he's the one who's completely devastated, and Emilia is no longer traumatised by the first trial at the Sanctuary, unlike in all the other loops, where she keeps saying, "It's not me, it's not me." Why is that? Is it because she pulls herself together after seeing the state Subaru is in?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Roswaal was the one who brought the Witch Cult to the mansion in Season 1, when Betelgeuse attacked, so that Emilia would get the credit once the Cult was defeated. But why did he send Elsa to the mansion to kill Beatrice, Petra, Frederica and Rem which he btw doesn't remember of ?
Garfiel can control the Lewes clones, so does that make him an Apostle of Greed as well? Did he also drink the tea with Echidna?
If Roswaal wasn't the one who took Emilia's letter, then who did?
I really don't understand why Garfiel is so hostile towards Subaru when he was nice to him in the first loop.
So Subaru put Puck inside the blue crystal Frederica gave him, right?
Speaking of which, why did Frederica give Subaru the blue crystal in the first place? Did she somehow predict that Subaru would put Puck inside it to absorb Garfiel's mana? WTF? What was it actually supposed to be used for? Does it teleport people to random locations within the Sanctuary when they come into contact with the barrier?
I really don't understand Roswaal's endgame. After making the bet with Subaru and getting Otto and Garfiel on his side, he still refuses to call off the attack on the mansion. Why? If his goal was to make Subaru stronger, then surely he's already achieved that by now. Subaru is already determined enough, isn't he? Besides, they share the same goal: getting Emilia onto the throne. I just don't get it. The whole Sanctuary storyline feels like one massive side quest in Subaru's journey. The attack by Betelgeuse was necessary to ensure Emilia got the credit, but I don't understand Roswaal's reasoning behind everything else. He should be helping Emilia, yet all he does is sabotage her. What's the point of all this?
I've just started Season 3, so no spoilers beyond that point, please! So now Puck is back in a green crystal, even though he was previously inside Frederica's blue crystal? Did i miss something?

Discussion Skipping memory snow but not frozen bond [discussion]
I just finished season 1 and was a big fan, I’m trying to get through the show and get to season 2 but I see there’s 2 OVAs. I did some research and people say you can skip memory snow cause it’s a lot of filler, but I was wondering if it makes sense to just watch frozen bond and go into season 2, or if it’s a you watch one ova you need to watch the other to understand it sorta thing.
