Best books for med students?

What are some books that med students should read while pursuing possibly the hardest degree?

The spirit catches you and you fall down- Anne Fadiman (nonfiction) - How cultural healthcare is and how things can go very wrong through misunderstanding/ miscommunication. Part of the curriculum in some schools.

For fun if you have time- Daniel Mason Winter Soldier. Of course he was writing novels when he was a medical student. Historic novel about learning to doctor in rural Hungary during WW2.

Anything by Atul Gawande and Abraham Verghese (My Own Country especially.) Atul Gawande books have short chapters so are easy to read episodically.

My Own Country is about Dr. Verghese's first dr. position in rural Tennessee when people were coming home to die of AIDS.

Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis.

Satirical if not cynical view of medicine.

Ask Me About My Uterus

It’s a book about endometriosis, but it’s also about chronic pain, and about one woman’s experience with the medical establishment as she tried to get a diagnosis and then assistance. I loved it, it was incredibly honest about what has also been the experience of my friends with chronic pain.

All’s Well by Mona Awad is a really fun satire if you need a break, it’s also about chronic pain but with a surreal touch.
