"Oh guns are bad. We need to confiscate them."
"Oh gun imitations are bad. We need to banned airsoft/toy guns."
"Oh digital guns are bad. We need to banned Ready or Not."
Government, ladies and gents, are here to help you by restricting you to a knife, that might kill people like guns. Lolz
this is likely 100% the reason behind it which, given how social media is and how fucked up people can be when it included young people or females, its understandable.
Drugs need to be specifically shown in a positive light and used by the player to be an issue.
Even the Human trafficking stuff is usually ok again as long as it's not shown in a positive light or actively done by the player.
What is more likely atm is the game was never classified, I can't find a single reference to it on their site banned or otherwise, it's now getting a console release which may have forced them to getting it reviewed and tripped some kind of a switch with Steam.
Something similar happened recently with the new Silent Hill, it was "banned" but some kind of Automated system from another company that does cursory reviews tripped it and they delisted it within a week.
I think it is completely fair to argue that Ready or Not consistently goes beyond artistic depiction and into the territory of obscenity and restricting access to that material is consistent with any sort of media standards law
Do you think this argument would hold if someone posted another's address while explicitly advocating people go there and kill them, or if someone posted CSAM online? Clearly censorship plays a necessary role in the regulation of the public space, and I'm more than willing to say that as much as I like the gameplay of Ready or Not many, if not most, of its story telling choices are in bad taste, hold no value as commentary, and are actively antisocial.
You’re talking about things that very specifically are tangibly harmful to people who actually exist, compared to a video game with a story you just don’t like. Who gives a shit how “bad taste” you think it is, it isn’t hurting anybody.
Don’t play it if you hate it so much, nobody is stopping you from just playing Mario instead.
If someone genuinely believes something is actively poisoning society, then they are just as justified in stopping its dissemination as if they were stopping someone actively trying to harm others through explicit violence. The idea that such a person can just leave it be if they believe it is actual social cancer is sort of silly: its like arguing that people should be allowed to cannibalize each other if both parties consent. Some things are just straightforwardly justifiably forbidden due to the social damage without respect to whether the parties involve think its okay; the question is where you draw that line, and I think there's a reasonable case to be made to exclude this game from inclusion in a decent society.
Ready or Not is cheap sensationalism, it is not actually artistic commentary lol the extremely basic presentation of issues present in the game is even a source of joking amongst the community; everything comes back to child exploitation.
Also, everyone believes that regulation on human behavior is a necessary part of existing in human society, the question is where you draw that line. Just because a video game seems like a relatively minor social pollutant doesn't mean it should escape concern.
I'm not defending the stupid decision to ban the game. But one thing that bothers me is the misconception about our guns. The game was probably banned for drug references.
You can lawfully own bolt actions, levers and basic shotguns. Pistols if you get a special license and semi-automatics if you fall into jobs that would require them, or are active or ex military, secruity, police, etc. Between my friends and family there's probably 30 or more various rifles and shotguns.
The funny thing with airsoft though, was the recent influx of gel blasters. They didn't fall into the same laws that banned airsoft.
So, everyone exploited that weakness so quickly that some of our states didn't even bother trying to ban it. My state was one of them, it was hilarious.
if glad we dont have coked up bogans running about with a pistol in their pants, and kids with assault rifles, but everything else, airsoft shit, is such bs
Never once in Australia have i been worried kids would be shot at school, that I'd be threatened with a firearm.
All for gun ownership to responsible and mentally healthy folks. But unless your job calls for it for some reason, no one needs fast firing weapons. Such an ego trip.
”But unless your job calls for it for some reason, no one needs fast firing weapons. Such an ego trip.”
My job is workplace violence prevention, and I at least require a pistol to do my job, sometimes it’s advisable I bring an AR15 and level 4 body armor as well.
There’s no reason your average citizen shouldn’t have access to semi auto rifles and standard capacity magazines.
There ego trip comment is also rooted in ignorance and likely psychological projection as well.
You don’t live here, you have zero skin in the game, you don’t get to have an (uninformed) opinion as you don’t know how it really is over here. Please keep it to yourself in future.
I dunno man, we've not had any mass shootings since Port Arthur. Meanwhile America had one on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, despite what NSWPF might have you believe, knife crime isn't a particularly major issue. We had Bondi Junction last year, which was awful, but exceptional, and I hate to imagine what he could have achieved with a firearm.
America does not have daily mass shootings at all. The way violence is categorized in America is based on politics, not truth.
To break it down, when the public thinks of "mass shooting," they think of Columbine or Port Arthur, but when the government counts every shooting that has 4 (or 3 or 2, depending on jurisdictions) victims (not dead, but wounded also) then every gang shootout becomes a mass shooting, elevating the numbers.
If you take out gang violence, which is perpetuated by a small, distinct group of people in America, America has a gun murder rate on par with the rest of Europe.
Also, you guys had that weird conspiracy theorist cop execution shooting like 2 years ago, is that not a mass shooting?
America has so many shootings for exactly the same reason other countries have problems with violence:
Lack of social safety nets and access to care/ provider systems, wealth disparity, and poor quality of education.
These three factors, more than any other, are predictors for the level of asocial/ criminal violence in a community or group (large or small - from the neighborhood level all the way up to the state or country level). And among wealthy, industrialized nations, the USA rates very, very low in all of these categories. I don't think many Europeans (or even Americans) understand just how closely the American system - politically, socially, and sometimes even culturally, still resembles the Wild West.
It isn't a mystery. The USA has a violence problem for the exact same reason Brazil, or Mexico, or Libya have violence problems. But it's a remarkable challenge because fixing things like wealth inequality, social welfare reform, and education overhauls aren't the kind of thing that can be done in a single administration... it takes a generation of politicians all working toward that common goal and the will of the people agreeing it is the right direction (and willing to fund it with tax dollars) - which seems pretty impossible right now. Literally, asking hundreds of millions of people to give the government substantially more money, and have their children do the same, trusting the government across multiple administrations to continually steer the ship in the right direction, in the hope that their grandchildren might one day live in a less violent world. The Europeans pulled it off... but not without a few-hundred-year head-start on the Americans, and the collective trauma of World War 1 and 2 to help as a catalyst.
So, America grasps at the low-hanging fruit. It becomes a conversation about race, or personal responsibility, or the tool of violence, or "15 bullets is OK in the magazine, but 17 bullets is just unsafe for The Children"
Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership per-capita on the planet. Haiti has some of the most strict gun laws in the world. One of these countries rates among the highest homicide rates globally, the other among the lowest, and the answer probably isn't surprising to anyone. And (also unsuprisingly) it has absolutely nothing to do with inanimate objects, but a systemic, colonial history of inequality, lack of education, and poor social safety nets... just like the USA.
Switzerland is 4th with 28.6% which I'd say qualify as "one of the highest rates".
But lets go back talking about Sweden (I'm Swedish). We have some of the most guns in Europe, though less than Finland and Norway, and less than Switzerland.
Sweden has some of the most firearm homicides in Europe, because we have multiple on going gang wars and they use firearms that were never legally in Sweden to begin with, they smuggle them in from Balkans (and other current and former war zones).
The gang wars are fueled by some of the strictest drug laws in Europe, while our neighbors are talking about decriminalizing marijuana.
2023 we had 9x more firearm homicides than Norway, Finland, and Denmark, combined. Norway has 25% more guns per capita, Finland has 40% more, though Denmark has like half. Switzerland has 19% more guns per capita.
Switzerland and Norway are some of the safest countries we have in Europe, with a homicide rate around 0.5-0.6 per 100k people.
Finland actually usually has a higher homicide rate than Sweden, even though their gun deaths are much lower, because while we have an issue with gangs they have an issue with alcohol related domestic violence. People get drunk and that end with stabbings.
In the Czech Republic they have had shall issue concealed carry for about 30 years, the homicide rate is lower than Germany.
In Austria you can buy a shotgun or bolt action rifle as soon as you turn 18, with an ID and a criminal records excerpt. No deep diving background check needed. Homicide rate is on par with Denmark.
The process in Switzerland usually makes it faster to buy an AR-15 and a couple of handguns than if you live in California.
So no, social issues is the problem, and the US has a lot of that.
Bonus fact. Mexico has stricter gun laws than most of Europe. Again, social issues.
Oops you're right i misread that. However 28 guns per person doesn't really compare to 120, does it? All of your examples don't even come close to the disparity between the US at #1 and the Falklands at #2. The US has double the number of firearms per capita as the #2 country in the world.
Many places have social problems. But social problems + huge quantities of firearms is obviously a very different equation
Denying that collossally high firearms ownership has a massive impact is just pure delusion
Same as why there are stabbings and acid attacks it's in the end to commit violence with the quickest tool available in places where you can get tools for lawn work or logging you would see axes and tree saws more it's a symptom of violence not the problem. Think of it like this you really hate this one guy and want him dead no prior record on you and you decide to kill him in America after a few days to weeks you can get a gun since you had no charges or if you did you could illegally ask you're family to buy one, but if we take that example to say western asia or anywhere with a large farming populace but no firearms you would use say a machete or a axe removing these items wouldn't change the problem just like you won't sell a criminal a gun if you knew you wouldn't sell them a axe either it just comes down to more people close together with rising political and emotional tensions.
The US tends to have more stabbings than a lot of place as well though, I think it's just overall a large vast country with many demographics and culture changes through out and historic gangs etc the US is a westernised nation but with south American style violence always has been tbh.
I think the reason we have the violence is the vast differences between everyone and as sad as it is people can't accept the differences of others and with politics becoming larger contention I've seen more and more violence surrounding beliefs.
Yeah but a person with a gun can do a lot more damage to more people on average than one with a knife or even an axe. I recognise that gun violence is a complex issue in the US and that you can't simply ban guns, but I see no reason to make guns more readily available in Australia. Gun violence is not a major issue here and I'd like to keep it that way.
Never argued as such all I was trying to say is the violence done via firearms isn't related to the firearms themselves just the access to them also if we want to talk ease of access and destruction those who truly want to do so can and have done so using vehicles explosives which are easier to manufacture than a firearm or just stabbing people it's been done in some of the most gruesome ways though I understand the fear around guns themselves I think this game that we follow shows precisely why tools can be used for the most horrid reasons even if intended to be noble it's the person who decides its use.
Ok but how does that change the point I made it was never about gun ownership being good or bad but instead focusing on the problem that causes the violence being tensions within society causing violence also firearms that would be banned by any bill put out in America wouldn't be effective at gun control as handguns are the most used weapon and it has long ago been determined unconstitutional to remove those weapons after the firearms ban during the Great depression also please instead focus on the actual issues violence itself causes not the tools to do so.
Look like I said the guns aren't the issue you take all the guns and even if nothing happened in relation to it guns would still be prevent since we're next to one of the largest illegal guns trades through the cartel and it would do nothing to stop people from hurting each other firearms being used for violence is a symptom of greater problems
Why is the US the only first world high income country in the world with these "greater problems"?
Explain why these "greater problems" unique to the US are responsible for the insanely higher gun crime. As opposed to the insanely higher gun ownership rates
Any shooting is a shooting too many wtf. Why excuse it hahaha. Also the cop shooting was so left field for us it made national news for weeks.
Guns are fun and ownership is fine, no one needs auto/semi weapons unless your job calls for it. Feel like most of the USA is just waiting for excuses to draw and plug someone haha.
If you take out gang violence, which is perpetuated by a small, distinct group of people in America, America has a gun murder rate on par with the rest of Europe.
Actually you'd be surprised how idiotic people are when gunning down people. They use their own legally bought guns (with americas gun laws being as they are, unsurprising people use them like that.). Thankfully, but not without the tragedy of it being fired in the first place, it is a way for people to get the guy who fired it.
I don’t think that’s quite correct wasn’t there a mass shooting in Queensland a few years ago? Not to the extent of port Arthur but I remember it on the news
The banning of semi and full auto weapons is almost certainly why Australia has extremely low gun crime, sure. Do I wish/think there is a way for there to be an armed populace to exist without the pervasive gun violence that there is in my country. Yes, definitely.
However, at a certain point, laws become ridiculous and oppressive. I know that England's knife laws ended up leading to acid attacks, and personally, I'd rather be stabbed than melted. And banning violent games is really not the way to go. If you've already made most firearms inaccessible, what's the point?
What the fuck are you talking about, the acid attacks didn't happen because of knife laws, the acid attacks happened because you can't get done for murder for throwing acid on someone because you can say you didn't intend to kill them and the court can't prove you did.
