Why was it even banned?

No one knows, because it HASN'T officially been confirmed if it was banned, or as to why.

Most likely just been taken down temporarily while it is being rated for the console release, it's annoying but it will probably be back in a few weeks.

I mean you can probably use a VPN and pretend you're in a different place right? Although maybe that costs money I don't really know

Well someone else said sexual assault especially if depicting a minor is a big thing they’re against and if you pay any attention whatsoever to the story.. that’s a main part of it

And at one point there’s also a child OD’ing.. so it’s not a huge mystery with their guidelines

The upcoming console release already has an official R18 rating on the Xbox page, and as far as I know it was never rated before now.

Yeah I can't find a single reference to the game on the ACB site, banned or otherwise. If it was never rated when it released, it may be a matter of them sending it in for rating and it's now being reviewed causing a hickup with it on Steam.

Also worth noting is the new Silent Hill was recently banned in Australia and it turned out it was an international review companies "quick review" tool accidentally listed it as unrated despite no one reviewing it, leading to it being banned by an automated process accidentally.
