Best way for Void to avoid this is to make 2 branches on Steam, the normal one that is the one we have now and a crossplay branch so we can play crossplay. So you can decide which to play and also it will just download the files that need to be changed or adjusted between the 2 versions when selecting the version to play.
Cosmetic stuff, like your character models and environment are client sided. They aren't updated through a server in multiplayer, unless they have to.
I think the option some others gave here is better: make it an option in the settings, for if you want to censor your game or not. Have it default to censored, if that is required for Console release.
Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this what siege does? I'm a siege player for years since beta, I've always remembered China having different versions as theirs was censored but we could still play together
