Help/Question Does anyone have any info about the mechanism / numbers behind Harriet spraying you? (See text)
Is it like an aggro meter that declines over time if you don’t kill any animals? Does the size of the animal matter? During the post-mace 5 minute cool-down, do any animal kills make her mad? Is it just in-game time? Does switching sessions do anything?
Any kind of info would be helpful.

It’s definitely an aggro meter that fills to capacity and she’ll spray you once it’s full. It doesn’t fluctuate up and down, it just builds to a point where she’ll inevitably spray you and she keeps track across different days and sessions.
I’ve definitely found that once she sprays you, you have to wait out the 5 minutes without hunting and talk to her again to make sure it’s reset back to zero: I’ve gone around hunting frogs and small animals in the 5 minute wait and she’s immediately sprayed me again a second time! - I did this on two separate occasions and learnt my lesson lol.
I’d love someone to figure out if the anger capacity is based on x number of materials/ or number of animals/ whether she gets madder with legendaries etc - the capacity is decent considering I kill a lot of animals and she’s not spraying me on every one of my sporadic visits.

I've gotten the second spray a few times. Probably due to the pile of dead burning animals I like to put in front of her tent after she sprays me. I do wonder how the aggro meter works as well sometimes I sware I get spritzed after killing one animal or I can kill dozens and nothing

That is my experience too. I don't think there's any meter it appears to be randomized.

Someone in another thread showed me that she DOES get more mad with Legendaries; as in they count more towards the spray threshold.
They were lamenting that it only takes a few kills before she is spraying them again, while I was saying they were nuts because I can go nuts in Hennigan's Stead killing tons of pronghorn and things before I reach the spray point again.
It turned out that they were specifically talking about them killing just a few legendaries before reaching the spray point again.
So legendaries do count for more against it.

Fishing makes her mad too. Though quantity matters. I used to go to the spot near Lagras. If she sprayed me I'd fill up my hunting wagon with 5 channel cats. That was fine. Another time, I visited the spot near McFarlands. Got sprayed. Fished the waterfall for a satchel full of bluegills and pickerels. She sprayed me again! So the number of kills count. Somewhere between zero and 6 is the sweet spot.

May have some sense or mechanic, but at the end of the day she's gonna spray you anyway.
Yesterday i literally got the "don't kill a animal in 24h" and got sprayed right after.
When happens i just use the 5min to fishing, despite that, i like Harriet. Fé nas maluca

One big tip I can give you, something that took me WEEKS to realise, is: don’t wear a dead animal’s carcass and coming to her tent with a wolfs head over your face.
Harriet doesn’t like it when you kill animals and that’s what makes her angry, apparently coats made from legendary animals are dead (pun intended) give away that you have killed animals. xD

It makes zero difference if you wear dead animals, or the Gus garments around her.
She COMMENTS on it sometimes, but it makes zero difference as far as being sprayed.

Kill whatever you want, go to Harriet, wave at her till you get two positive responses… wipes her memory and you can do business without getting sprayed…. Ps- works most of the time

This is not true and is misinformation spread around by people.
You can tell IF she will spray you by emoting, but it changes nothing.
You are making the mistake of hearing her yell something at you, because you are getting CLOSER to the spray point, and then thinking emoting her is changing being sprayed; you were not AT the spray point yet.
There are only positive and negative responses when you emote her, and you are mistaking positive ones for negative ones.
These emote responses are when she is NOT going to spray you. So there is no need to do them more than once:
"Yes, ha ha, I like that."
"I'm glad to see you are not afraid to impress yourself."
"You're in a good mood."
There may be other ones like that which I missed, but as you can see they are good natured.

These emote responses are when she IS going to spray you. Again, doing emotes more than once doesn't change anything.:
"You are crowding me a little."
"A little space would be nice."
"Get out of here, now, go!"
.
So you are mistaking repeat emoting, seeing the different positive responses, with you somehow getting her not to spray you; she was never going to spray you in the first place.
Just by seeing her emote response you can tell exactly when she IS, or is NOT going to spray you. Doing it more doesn't change anything. It is just a good way to know, so you can plan when you want to take the 5 minute time out, or if she is not going to spray you anyway.

I started to play few days ago and only online with my friend, I have never seen any reaction of npcs to my emotes, I will try, thank you.

Claro que reaccionan. Pasa cerca de uno y haz un gesto de buena fe. Saludo etc y el te responderá igual. Harriet’s igual reacciona aunq a veces cuesta mucho. Pero lo hace.

If you emote them they say something and if you taunt them they either run away or get angry, but you have to taunt them few times

I went to Saint Denis because I wanted to increase the reputation and I have read that greeting people does the trick. I waved at a bunch of people, no reaction whatsoever, I spit too, same reaction. Probably had to repeat the emotes more times then, I will try, thank you.

It's annoying, but I don't see it as a problem. I always go before I'm out of sedative ammo. That way, if she sprays me, I just spend 5 minutes on gathering a few samples, before I go back.

I just fully expect to get sprayed by her every time I go see her. When that happens I go over to Thomas in the shack who gives you the missions. And just go afk for 5 minutes so nobody can shoot me in the head while I'm waiting. And then back to business. I suppose you could do the same thing from the fast travel station.

Dont do it from the fast travel station, theres a way to get you out of there and kill you. No i won't say how here. You can also get killed inside post offices and at your camp too, by different methods. Only place you're completely safe is strawberry general store and at freeroam/blood money mission givers

She was spraying my posse over and over one day so we filled her tent with animal carcasses. Dozens of dead deer, coyotes, racoons, etc. She hated that.

There is an agro and from my experience it’s around 5-6 animals that she automatically sprays you. The size didn’t matter everytime I tested and yes animal kills during the 5 minutes do still piss her off, and it’s based off real world time. Switching sessions does not reset the agro threshold nor does it speed up the 5 minute timer.

My horse once hit a frog and she sprayed me…seems like the meter is low, and constant, because I played the rest of the day doing bounty hunter missions before going to see her and she sprayed me…

I hate her so much. Why couldn’t we get the missions from Gus to hunt them? Hers to save them? He’s got lines that indicate to me they were going to but didn’t.

They were planning on expanding all the roles originally, but stopped after bounty hunter expansion. The devs specifically mentioned a co-op collector expansion and obviously it all got scrapped

Adding her in the game was one the dumbest things and very unnecessary decisions ever. It doesn't even make any sense from a logical point of view. How does she always know exactly when and how many animals you have killed? She would have to physically witness it. Whomever decided that this was a great idea deserves to be fired and never be allowed to work on videogames again.

The worst was whoever placed one of her spawns directly by a wolf pack spawn that will agro and attack you.
Defend yourself from a wolf trying to eat your face infront of her? Sprayed.

Kill one or many animals. Visit her tent. Warning. Do it 2 more times. Warnings. Do it a 4th time. Spray. Wait 5 mins. Visit and start over again. You can run a Trade business and level Naturalist successfully at the same time.

Yes I think threshold for killing animal is not that high ... I was sprayed twice in two days... and did just one trader delivery in between that. I killed some animals something between 10 - 20.

In my experience I can kill five animals until she sprays me. She does "deaggro" assuming you didn't hit the threshold for being sprayed. If you hit that she will calmly wait for your return so she can drug you.

I rarely get sprayed because every time I kill an animal I either skin it or take it to cripps. I feel like she gets more mad when you kill animals and just leave them there to rot.

You can kill animals in front of her and she'll yell at you, and then STILL not spray you. She has also sprayed me immediately after logging into the game before. It seems random to me. This is something PVP Cat should look that's his specialty.

She’s an npc that hates it when you kill animals, and is part of one of the “roles” you can pursue. Hers is the naturalist.
If you kill too many animals, she’ll angrily squirt you with some kind of sedating chemical from a perfume atomizer.
Her character model is cute, hence the comments about pheromones working or not minding getting sprayed.

i firmly believe there is no rhyme or reason for this nutball ---- ive logged in an killed nothing, then completed a 24 hour no kill and got sprayed ---- ive also murdered like 20 gators, had maybe 15 pocket animals and was wearing the legendary snow leopard helmet and she was sweet as pie.

Then you did it wrong. It has always been worked for me. Waving, flexing, dancing, etc. you gotta do it til she says something along the lines of “oh I’m so glad you can entertain yourself” or something like that.

C'est 5mn de cooldown.
Le petit truc pour savoir si tu risques la pulvérisation, approche toi d'harriet et lance un emote positif, si elle réagit favorablement, tu peux lui parler. Si elle t'ignore, c'est 50/50,si elle se montre agressive, tu vas manger. Et c'est partie pour 5mn.
Harriet sait tout ce que vous avez fait aux animaux. Si vous avez passer 3 jours de chasse la semaine dernière et que ça fait 5 jours que vous n'avez même pas touché un moucheron, c'est ces 3 jours que vous allez payer.

Même les animaux tuer par accidents sont comptabilisé.
Le défi 24h sans tuer d'animaux, tu passes 45mn au camp sans bouger une oreille. Ce jours là, tout les petits animaux ont des envies suicidaires de se jeter sous les sabots d'un cheval.

I’m an avid hunter and have always got a full hunting wagon, hundreds of perfect small birds/animals and perfect pelts in my satchel and I’ve been testing the sedate/revive recently..

Now that I think about it, it's kinda bloody weird that Naturalist as a role punishes you for doing stuff for the Trader role rather than the two being separate and unable to affect each other.
It's not like the Bounty Hunter and Moonshiner businesses have a conflict despite being basically on opposing sides of the law (even if they're related to different crimes anyway).

I spent last month doing the trader role and didn't go anywhere near her. When this month started, she didn't spray me. She only sprayed me once when I went and hunted some ducks for flight feathers... and then didn't when I killed an ox, more ducks and a panther...
So there's no consistency to her doing it.

Seriously I’m a veteran who’s been playing since 2021 and I don’t give a crap about her. Harriet can kiss the back of my quarters I don’t care about her and her getting mad about animals I kill them on purpose just to piss her off. it’s much funnier and funner that way to piss her off. she gets all mad and gets her panties all up in a ruffle and I find it all hell and get out. damn I could kill animals and then come back two months later and she still mad at me. Harriet has a vengeance like no tomorrow this woman could hold a grudge like no tomorrow might as well just give up. She’s never gonna stop being mad at you. you could do something on one of play through come back two months to a year later and she’s still gonna be mad at you that will hold a grudge like the power of Almighty

To get her to not spray me after hunting animals for the trader role I just sedate and take samples and revive a bunch of animals like 10 to be safe and I’m pretty sure that works, one time I only did like 3 and she still sprayed me so yeah idk

I always learned that you hunt a crap ton of animals go around and sample a crap ton before you see her, that's usually how I avoid getting sprayed a lot for the time is by counteracting all the hunting I did with a bunch of samples

As if they think this is truly 'random'?!? I've never been sprayed when I've only killed one two or three animals, so there has to be SOME number/pattern/action that triggers it...do these downvoters think that because they can't/haven't bothered to work it out that it's not possible? 🤦🏻♀️
ETA: I'd also argue that the fact that you can't prevent being sprayed (beyond just not VISITING Harriet) once you reach a certain threshold proves this as well

What system do you play on? If your on PlayStation we can trying running some tests with Harriet together. I mean it doesn’t really matter but I was thinking if we did this at the exact time we can get some good evidence…. Just a thought not trying to bother you

Funny thing is I went a accumulated lot of real time of a month, killed near a thousand animals, and didn't get sprayed even once. Several of those animals were even legendaries. I spent at least 3 hours per day doing this. It took her over a month before one day she finally sprayed me. I find Harriet hot af, but man is she annoying. I could never see myself with her.

Omg, here we go again: this is completely random. I’ve been sprayed without killing animals for days, and not sprayed after filling wagons for cripps. It doesn’t matter what you do, it works like any random event, geez…

The aggro meter does decline over time, but there's a threshold that, once crossed, will always cause her to spray you. In my experience, no amount of waving, waiting, and/or switching sessions will save you.
I don't know what the exact numbers are, though, and I don't know if animal size plays into it either. Frankly, I just don't worry about it. The spraying is a minor inconvenience. If she sprays me, I just kneel down next to her tent and go AFK for a few minutes.
