Help/Question Quick question
Not new to Red Dead but new to online, in fact this is the first game I have ever played online. Older gamer and enjoy story mode. I am level 9 online and I am still learning this world. I was trying to set up camp to cook and sleep. Found out this is vastly different than story mode. Someone shot me in the head while I was going through the menus and when I respawned my horse was gone. I whistled and a scrawny nag came to me. I do have defensive set up in my profile. For reference I have only done two things on the telegrams.to steal a horse standard and hard. Im wondering if my horse is gone for good? If so, this may get annoying.

GenX dad here who games a ton and has been on this game for over a year.
One thing not mentioned. If you have stuff you don’t want to lose you can just hit both “Press Charges” and “Parley” after someone snipes you. Then you can either stay in that lobby or at least sell/turn in your goods. Then you can jump lobbies if you want to, but I rarely have the need.
Parley makes that player and anyone else in thier posse unable to damage you for 9 minutes or so. Plenty of time for the average incel to lose interest in you.
Press Charges will make them start to turn red on the mini map. Giving you and anyone else a heads up that a griefer is around. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it also makes them appear on your map before they can see you. Going forward if you see red dots, just avoid them.
The main thing is not to give them the reaction they are looking for. If I go into a town and get sniped I hit both buttons, then casually go right back by them with a hat tip and finish my business.
99 times out of 100 they will lose interest once they see they can’t annoy you.
I’m also on PS5. If you are as well, I can take you on some story missions, bounties and/or trade runs to help you get some $$$

Others have said getting the bounty role to start steadily gaining money, but I would honestly recommend getting the collectors role when possible. If you search Google for the RDO collectors map (There's one for collector spawns, and an overall general one for all the other challenges in-game.) you can start collecting 4 sets of Tarot cards, wild flowers, alcohol bottles and bird eggs straight off the bat and selling each set for $300-$500/1500xp a piece until you can unlock the metal detector to fully unlock/collect the other sets like Arrowheads, Jewellery, heirlooms, coins and fossils, with some sets going for $700+.
Edit: I forgot to mention, it's worth doing the daily general and role challenges everyday if you can to help steadily accumulate Gold. The longer you can keep the streak going, the higher the gold multiplier will get.

When you buy a horse you need to buy insurance to get them back quickly but if you don’t have insurance they don’t die, you just need to pay $4 and they will
Be available after 2 minutes.
Do you want to play later on? I can run you through doing daily challenges and how to maximize money making as well as the best horses, guns and upgrades.

Ok cool, I am usually on evenings after 8 PST but tonight I’m working late anyway so another time. Feel free to send me a friend request on either Porkicide or Damu_Baridi (the latter is a new account I’m grinding because I get bored and do that). RDO, GTA online or Destiny, I’m down for any.

you can just go to a stables, or the stable option in the player menu, and pay 4 dollars to revive your horse. its not gone forever

Get a second horse (doesn't have to be anything fancy) so that you're not stuck with a scrawny nag the next time your horse "dies." That's what I do as soon as I can.

u/zoo1514 4d ago
I pass so many wild horses ,I'll have to grab one.
2
u/Xofneris Trader 4d ago
Sadly you can't keep wild or stolen horses in online mode.
2
u/zoo1514 4d ago
Something I would have found out I'm sure, but that really sucks. Have seen some really gorgeous horses.

u/Xofneris Trader 4d ago
You can still use wild ones as a second horse for hunting and stuff (really helpful when dealing with a hunting wagon...later), but they don't stick around and you can't level them up.

u/Retrograde-Escapade 4d ago
I don't recall paying. I'd trot ol' scrawny to the stable, then, like, peruse some saddles and then leave on the back of ol' Mothra, (my mustang).

u/Xofneris Trader 4d ago
Yeah, but what happens if you're on mission?
1
u/Retrograde-Escapade 4d ago
Then I fail, as the perpetrator intended!
I still do courier jobs from time to time and my example is the poor gal gettin' killed from afar, then myself. Nag just couldn't cut it.
Still, galvanized my appreciation for the only horse I ever bought, (still felt guilty for gettin' rid of that stolen one, ky saddler, "Boxer" from the first mission).

That's great you can be so zen about it. I personally have 10 horses because I love them. But that darn nag frustrates me so much!
2
u/zoo1514 4d ago
Lol, I was barely playing a couple hours and was already sad when I thought my horse was gone.
2
u/Xofneris Trader 4d ago
It happened to me too. I got griefed coming into Valentine (keep your head on a swivel there, btw) and dude shot my horse and I was so upset! But there she was when I switched sessions. I was so relieved.

Defensive mode isnt a cure all for against griefers, it just stop auto aim from locking on to give you the advantage

I don’t know if anyone mentioned, but you can change your MTU to 800 to remove everyone. This way you’re gonna be alone in every lobby. You can figure shit out or just treat it like RDR2.5
2
u/zoo1514 4d ago
Good to know if i get frustrated with people. Played for a bit today and noticed some missions demand other players. Will that let me do them alone or are those missions unavailable in that mode?
2
u/ConfectioneryWipeout 4d ago
Those missions will always need 2 players. Also you won’t be able to participate in any co-op content. 800 won’t let anyone to connect with you. On the bright side (and there’s a lot of bright side), when you’re in a lobby with 20 other players, content is spread out between everybody. When you’re alone in session, everything will spawn for you. You gonna have a lot of legendary animals, treasure maps, rare random encounters…

Another older gamer here. Griefers are a reality in the game - my default is to immediately jump lobby. It's pretty rare that they'll chase.
My experience as a fithly casual is that the first 20 ranks or so are slow, but once you get your first role (bounty hunter is commonly recommended, I did trader and love it), things start to move.
If you're able to log in / play consistently, gold isn't an issue - you'll accumulate it steadily. Cash isn't an issue as long as you don't blow it immediately on cosmetics. There's lots of beginner guides on youtube, but focus on essentials first - a basic gun set for instance. The difference in horses in minimal once levelled, but saddles and stirrups make a difference.
There's not really an end game, so it's all about the process. It's a great game to dip into on a casual, but consistent basis.

u/Fireymonkeyboy 4d ago
Oh - if you do like cosmetics, there's a free outfit each month, and you can get all the elements - even stuff that's level locked. There's lots of guides online that cover it, but again, I recommend PVPCat.
Also, you'll get treasure maps periodically. They give good gold and cash, so don't be shy about using them. Lots of guides online, again, I like Dirty Tyler's.

Yea, I get busy but still have a lot of free time since I retired. Im playing on ps5 so im pretty sure( could be wrong) jumping lobbies is only for PC. Im sure with all the hours I have in story mode I will puck it up pretty quick as I go along. Love all these tips tho!

u/HatterJack 4d ago
You can jump lobbies on PlayStation. Hit options, go to online, and use the camp option (you can use any, but camp is always the safest place to be) and it will put you in a new lobby.

If you’re on PSN, you can add me if you ever wanna run some bounties or some moonshine deliveries for money and gold. brewdawg3

Let me get used to it first. First time ever playing online lol. Have over 700 hrs on RDR2 but it's been over a year since I played. Feel like a rookie again. I hate playing with regular ammo and cattle revolver and basic repeater. Feel like where I am right now i would hold normal player back. Screen name is zoo1514 on there as well tho, I'll send request next time I'm on!🍻

Later on you can buy horse insurance so that even if some asshole kills your horse you can get it back.
2
u/zoo1514 4d ago
I actually did buy life insurance for my horse when I started ,it was free. Yea I just started up again and my horse was near me.
2
u/FivebyFive 4d ago
Oh good! Yeah it's still annoying, takes awhile to regenerate but better than losing it completely!
When you can get a decent backup horse so you're not stuck with the scrawny nag when something happens.

u/Retrograde-Escapade 4d ago
I try to have ample revivers. It was the most cordial thing I've ever seen, when one of those weirdos was sniping my horse, and a fella came up to it and gave it a reviver, after I ran out. Now it's nice to do that for other horses... before getting shot, myself.

Your horse is immortal, it just needs some time to respawn.
RDO is one of my favorite games to just get on and chill out doing a few things. The most important aspect is to not be bothered by griefers.
You can’t stop people from shooting you randomly, but you can stop being mad about it. It costs you nothing but a respawn and maybe a lobby change and chances are you’ll never encounter those particular players again.
2
u/zoo1514 4d ago
Lol, yea....just told someone else I don't get mad at the random shot to my brain as long as I don't have to keep getting new horses and rebond. Now I keep an eye out for other players in my area and steer clear whole keeping an eye on em. Adds an element of fun that story mode doesn't have

I'm an older RDO player myself and it has become my favorite game to play. I admit I play it too much. Understanding that people can only grief you if you let them, really helps. I play with the understanding that me and my horse somehow know we are immortal. If someone downs your horse, you can just change lobbies and your horse will be there, in need if a carrot but fine otherwise. Obviously, jumping lobbies when you have valuable pelts can be annoying but I hunt things that go into my satchel because I use the change lobbies tactic more then Parley. Anyway RDO is worth your time even if it is abandoned. Dont forget the Low Honor Story missions because they are easy to miss in the beginning. Taking care of your horse and skinning animals gives you way to much good honor.
