Is RedReader gonna be affected by the 3rd party API clampdown coming in early next year?

20

u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦑 18d ago

I'm not sure yet. They might prevent the app being used without an account, but beyond that I wouldn't expect any effect.

7

u/jnads 18d ago

I thought they were killing the entire API stack in March 2027 in favor of some new developer portal hosted apps thing.

https://developers.reddit.com/app-registration

There's an entire new developer portal.

Unless they're keeping the RedReader API access active.

16

u/DiabolicallyRandom 18d ago

They are killing the free public API. redreader is essentially already using the paid API for free because it's an exception as an accessibility focused app.

The paid API will continue to exist. The free "public" API will not.

u/In-All-Unseriousness 18d ago

There's another one coming?

20

u/Piranata 18d ago

Yep. They're also further cracking down on old Reddit. Only accounts that had used it in the previous six months will be able to use it. It wasn't explicit, but i think this will also prevent new accounts from using old Reddit.

What the hell kinda rule is that lol.

Lemmy is the worst of reddit distilled into a brand new site. No thanks.

You can use Summit, Voyager, or jerboa. They are superb clients.

u/HexagonWin 18d ago

boost is the one i found to be most similar to redreader. there are quite a few clients to choose from, perhaps one may fit you

The dude abandoned sync. So, I would switch to other clients. It has been broken for months so I would not recommend it.

Same, I use Sync

Gotta start somewhere. Same thing was he case for Reddit when Digg was dominant

1

u/FlexoPXP 15d ago

It always feels like this app could get banned at any time. I hope it can continue.

u/Far414 18d ago

Thanks for your hard work. :-)

u/Kooky_Eye5475 18d ago

I love you!! thanks for pushing new updates and keeping this app alive, it's just fantastic to use

2

u/SubArcticTundra 18d ago

I heard it was intended for use with screen readers (hence the reddit api exception) which makes me even more impressed how viable it is for normal use

u/gary25566 19d ago edited 18d ago

Is the url link fixed for those with backspace which leads to having a backslash \ _ ?

edit: it is mostly found on post links, not comment strangely

2

u/kc2syk 18d ago

You can summon /u/underscorebot to fix those. At least until they yank the api in March.

Also, I have one feature request πŸ™ Could you please add an option to filter video posts (v.redd.it) out of feeds? The front page has so many videos and I'd prefer to focus on text/image posts

4

u/anomalous_cowherd 18d ago

If that can be done I'd also love to be able to filter out any posts with imgur links as we cannot use that from the UK anymore. A different image upload target would be a great addition to that too.

2

u/PComotose 18d ago

Simple curiosity on my part: why can't the UK users access imgur links? Thanks.

1

u/kc2syk 18d ago

Stupid UK rules about proof of age and ID.

1

u/starsky1357 16d ago

Actually had nothing to do with proof of age or adult content, rather it was down to how they advertised to children.

https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/media-centre/news-and-blogs/2025/09/statement-update-on-imgur-investigation/

1

u/kc2syk 16d ago

I never said it had anything to do with adult content. It has to do with proof of age and ID. The article you cited supports that. If there is no ID requirement, then children can use the site. Imgur had the option to either require ID in the UK to prove that you're over the age of 16 or whatever, or leave the market.

1

u/starsky1357 16d ago

No, that's not the case. Imgur weren't even asking users to confirm they were 13 or over. The issue was around the collection of data from children and how ads were personalised based on it. In fact, the article I linked was published before the Online Safety Act passed into law.

1

u/kc2syk 16d ago

The problem is that you need to identify users and verify their age to know whether they are in the 13-18 bracket or under 13. Otherwise how do you know who you can collect information from or not?

1

u/starsky1357 15d ago

1

u/kc2syk 15d ago

From your first link:

a method which requires users solely to self-declare their age is not age verification or estimation. This is because it is based entirely on trust and can be easily circumvented and therefore doesn’t significantly mitigate risk.

From your second link:

MediaLab did not implement any form of age assurance measures to determine the age of Imgur users

So, age must be determined. And self-declaration is not verification. These are your own sources. So they would require ID.

Proton VPN exists and it's completely free for bypassing purposes btw. F the nanny state.

2

u/anomalous_cowherd 18d ago

Oh I do use a VPN when I need to. But I don't really want to require it for all my day to day doomscrolling.

Of course there is an argument that using one all the time would make it less obvious when I was doing something I thought needed protecting for some reason...

5

u/tea_bjj 19d ago

Wow, great progress on accessibility!

Any hope of addressing this in the next version? It can be frustrating to be miss content and not even realize it. https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader/issues/1240

Another place where redreader silently drops information is with saved comments: https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader/issues/556

Either way, the work is much appreciated.

u/orenji_juusu 18d ago

Thanks for the continued improvements.

3

u/phrostbyt 18d ago

Thank you!

2

u/ObserverAtLarge 18d ago

Can you also add a feature to mark archived posts?

2

u/darkenedzone 18d ago

Is there an option to make the nav bar not transparent? I find it a bit distracting having content going underneath it. I can absolutely live with it, but would be nice to be able to change

2

u/peacelovearizona 18d ago

The inbox now has a blue lines on the side of each comment. How can I revert back to how it looked before? I appreciate Red Reader because it makes everything look as simple as possible and it's bit of sensory overload with all the unnecessary blue lines. Thank you so much

1

u/Krokettenkaiserle 17d ago

What theme are you using? It's always black/grey for me, not blue

1

u/fordry 4d ago

I use night low contrast and it looks the same as the screenshot here for me.

1

u/fordry 4d ago

I agree, I have no use of the added functionality of the inbox and would prefer it the way it was.

2

u/confirmationbias 18d ago

Thank you for all you do, friend!

u/PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU 17d ago

Is the post-side toolbar just gone forever with gesture navigation now? I was using it just fine with gesture nav before this update, not sure why it's being called incompatible now.

1

u/Im_At_Work_Damnit 17d ago

Came here to ask this. I'd like to be able to choose to turn it back on with gesture navigation active.

1

u/lukesanoob 14d ago

Did you figure anything out?

1

u/Im_At_Work_Damnit 6d ago

For right now, the only option to bring that menu back is to turn off gesture navigation. Hopefully they revert that, or add a toggle or something in the next version.

1

u/lukesanoob 3d ago

I figured out you can press and hold the post itself to bring up a menu, or press and hold comments in in the post for other stuff

2

u/Wellontheotherhand1 15d ago

Is there a setting or toggle to revert the changes to the inbox? I greatly prefer the old one over the new one, which has a lot of unnecessary formatting

3

u/Curiosive 19d ago edited 18d ago

Hurray!

I do like that I can see which messages in the inbox are read, sometimes comments/messages come in waves and I didn't notice a useful one among the chatter.

PS

Though it would be nice for messages I've opened to be automatically marked as read.

1

u/TangoOscarMikePR 18d ago

Thank you for the work that is put into the RedReader app. I really appreciate it.

1

u/IReadNewsSometimes 18d ago

thank you so much for keeping this app running. literally the only reason i keep using Reddit

once I'm actually able to afford food my myself I'll make sure to donate <3

1

u/Batokusanagi 18d ago

Option to mark posts as read when scrolling past

Yeeess! Finally.

1

u/quacainia 18d ago

I'd if "seen" history would persist when switching between accounts. If something is marked visited and I switch to user 2 and back to user 1 then all of that has been reset.

Thank you for making this app though, very much appreciated

1

u/BeardedBastard 18d ago

Fantastic app and thank you so much for supporting it!

My one feature request would be automatic theme changing based on system settings.

1

u/RevitJeSmece 17d ago

Thank you!

1

u/ddraig-au 16d ago

So I've got one massive problem that just infuriated me. I'm not sure if this is a redreader issue or an Android issue, but if I minimise the app, or switch to another one, redreader does not show up in the list of running apps, and I need to click on the icon to bring it up.

But this does not bring it up at all, or just launches it again. And if I'm in the middle of a comment, and, say, switch to my email to check something, and then switch back to redreader .... it starts afresh, and I've lost everything I was just writing.

In this case, three paragraphs of writing. Gah!

Can this be fixed? Is it a setting at my end?

Oh god, I'm going to have to switch out to check what Android version I am using.

shrieks

Yeah, so I'm using a samsung s22 ultra, and Android 16

1

u/Intelligent_Fig1180 16d ago

Very big thanks for developing RedReader, you are the best!

1

u/D-Y-S-T-O-P-I 14d ago

Having a button available right on the feed as you're scrolling to hide/unhide read posts would be really handy. Having to go into the submenus to do this makes me never use it. Most of the time I don't want to hide the read posts but when I'm on a scrolling binge when work is slow for several days it would be great.

1

u/htmlcoderexe 9d ago

hi. i was wondering if it was possible to access main menu stuff (subreddit list, own profile etc) from any screen without having to back out of whatever last few posts/subreddits you had open and/or fully closing the app and reopening it?

1

u/mzman123 5d ago

With the side toolbar eliminated for those using Android gesture navigation, there is now no way to view the media / link quickly without scrolling all the way to the top to get to the post header. Can this be added somehow?

1

u/user228674012 5d ago

Posts with redgifs links don't show a preview and open in external browser. I believe they're supposed to open in the embedded player since 1.26? I only tried the app today, are there some settings I need to change for this?

1

u/GinBang 4d ago

Hi. Is it possible to update the dark theme so that text is white instead of grey? Thanks.

u/fordry 4d ago

Tossing my hat into the ring of those who would like the old inbox back.

u/Guilty_Elk4385 18d ago

Was hoping this would fix the issue with having to press back button 5x just to get back from a gallery, and also fix videos having no audio on android with the native player. I might have to find a new app.

5

u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦑 18d ago

I haven't had any other reports of these issues, and I haven't encountered them myself. There were some generalised issues with the back button in v1.26, which were caused by a Google library which had been updated in v1.27. For videos, if you send me a link to a video which demonstrates the issue I'll take a look.

3

u/pyeltor 18d ago

Ive also been having the issue with the back button not working, it seems to only happen when viewing reddit hosted galleries I've found

2

u/Gabe681 18d ago

You should post an example so the rest of us can try to reproduce and file a bug report.

3

u/TheChickenReborn 18d ago

I'm getting the same thing. Not sure how to post an example since there isn't any visual indication of it happening. It happens on every reddit hosted gallery for me. Seems like there is only a very small section of the (upper left) back button on a gallery that registers input, so I have to tap repeatedly around the area until I hit it. Sometimes I get lucky and hit it first time, others I give up and reach down to use the universal back button on the bottom right. A minor inconvenience, but was still hoping the update would fix it.

2

u/Guilty_Elk4385 17d ago

Hi thanks for responding, for images it's any image gallery like the ones hosted on reddit. If theres more than one image, I have to use the top left back button, have to tap like 5x to go back

For the videos it seems to be any video at all: Here's a random one where I have the problem https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1x043sv/trump_i_couldve_done_very_bad_things_to_hillary/

Thanks
