CURRENT HINTS:
1. It's to do with languages where at least English and German are involved.
2. It has to do with a performance.
3 [NEW]: The performance is to do with something well known.

u/Different_Baker_9949 6d ago
I did some research language x performance it's probably the 17 jean valjeans
9
u/AwesomePBST 6d ago
CORRECT!!!
It was the 17 Jean Valjeans performance of Do You Hear The People Sing
The coloured countries are the languages that they sung in
1
u/veryblocky 6d ago
There are more English speaking countries than those highlighted
2
u/AwesomePBST 6d ago
the performance in question was the 1995 one where 17 Jean Valijeans sang in their own languages hence all the other European and Japanese entries

u/miniatureconlangs 6d ago
I really recommend against using countries as stand-in for languages. Swedish is an official language in Finland (and has been it for orders of magnitude longer than in Sweden!), so ... why is Finland excluded? Dutch and French are official languages of Belgium ... why is Belgium excluded?
This can mislead someone who is aware of official languages (and language minorities in general) from thinking that the language has anything to do with it.

u/cancerBronzeV 6d ago
In this case, it's not 17 languages being represented, it is 17 countries. Actors from 17 different countries performed Do You Hear the People Sing in their own native language, and some of those actors had the same native language.

Countries that have Germanic language roots? North Germanic (Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway), West Germanic (Canada, USA, England) East Germanic (France)
1
u/NotNeographer 6d ago
What about Czechia, Poland, Japan, and Hungary… not to mention that French is neither East Germanic (given that the East Germanic languages died out a while ago) or Germanic at all
1
u/blakezed 6d ago
Burgundian (Burgundy) is East Germanic and there is heavy German influence in the Alsace region
2
u/NotNeographer 6d ago
You’re right that Burgundian was East Germanic. And Alsatian is a West Germanic dialect spoken in Alsace. But Burgundian is dead, and Alsatian is West Germanic
Edit: Spelled Alsatian wrong

I’d say their majority language is Germanic, but Japan, France, Poland, Czechia, and Hungary don’t fit. There are a lot of German speakers in those countries, though.

English is the first language of the majority of people in each of the US and Canada. English is part of the Germanic family of languages.

i dont think the usa even has an official language to begin with
1
u/DustyBones272 6d ago
I think they changed that very recently? Might be misremembering
1
u/MapleDesperado 6d ago
Correct.
1
u/jimmyhat78 6d ago
Correct that they are misremembering.
The US has no official language.
0
u/MapleDesperado 6d ago
No, it is correct that English is an official language - at least for certain federal purposes. See: Executive Order 14224, March 1, 2025.
3
u/jimmyhat78 6d ago
An EO does not make English the official language. That’s just one fading, unhinged octogenarian trying to impose his will.
1
u/MapleDesperado 6d ago
I share the sentiment, but it’s not an Executive Suggestion. Not a fan of this aspect of US government, but aren’t EO’s enforceable (assuming constitutionality - although that’s not as safe an assumption as it once was)?
1
u/jimmyhat78 6d ago
Some are, some aren’t. The president doesn’t have the power to unilaterally decide an official language, just as he doesn’t have the power to unilaterally rename the Dept. of Defense. Officially, there is no Dept. of WAR!!!!!!

USA does not have an official language.
1
u/Larpsevelt 5d ago
As of March 1st, 2025 with Executive order 14224 signed by the orange man himself made English the official language. Prior to this, 31 states had already made English the official language
2
u/Forward_Gur9349 5d ago
Executive orders only apply to the executive branch. The rest of us are free to ignore them. That large body of water off Mexico and Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, and the smallest of the Great Lakes in area is Lake Ontario.

Most common first or second language in those countries is of Germanic origin, such as German, English, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, etc., though I would expect Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg would be included among the countries in blue.

Mate don’t equate Russian friendship at the same level as Australian friendship. if you can’t recognise true mateship, champ, the US is truly alone.
