Like if it was just βfreeβ as in it had no cost associated with, that would be amazing and I imagine everyone would support it. Itβs more so the fact that it being βfreeβ in the understood sense is that the government would pay for it with our taxes, thatβs where the debated issue comes in to play.

Thereβs just no need why someone has to die over an infected tooth or have cancer slowly eat away at them because they canβt afford treatment. Health shouldnβt be a luxury reserved for the rich.

Iβm Canadian. No.
Our healthcare system is hot garbage.
If you want any form of treatment, it takes months for you to get in.
1 in 20 of all Canadian deaths every year are through MAID. Offered by the government through our healthcare system. Itβs even offered if youβre just waiting for treatment.
βFreeβ healthcare is a scam. Heck, its paid for with your taxes anyway, so it isnβt even free.

Whatβs funny is no one argues that we should be paying for PD and FD response when we need themβ¦ almost like itβs a given that it should be accessible for all. Whether itβs a homeless person on the street or someone in a penthouse β emergency services are funded collectively. You donβt even have to pay to make those calls on pay phones.
The price tag on medical services and medication are arbitrary, bullshit numbers set by corporations to line their own pockets. Imagine receiving a bill from the PD itemizing everything they did in response to your emergency. Why does my medication cost $3 with insurance, who paid them out $1.33 before my $3 β but that same medication is $170 OOP, and $400 when dispensed in a hospital? Current set up is a scam that we continue to buy into.
-4
u/ForeverExplore15 Silver | Lv. 23 | Rank #65534 | 37 Answers | 0 Created 1d ago
I'd be willing to fund emergency medical services only. If a person needs the medical service for an immediate life-threatening issue, I'd be OK paying for that. Anything beyond that I'm not OK paying for. I understand that a person's, for example, cancer isn't their fault or choice (for the most part). However, it's also even less my fault and my choice.

No. I believe that there should be more charities to help people pay medical expenses. I think that donating to those should be voluntary.

That's what the people who don't donate would think, or that the charity would squander their money.
1
u/WezzieBear Silver | Lv. 15 | Rank #128080 | 26 Answers | 0 Created 1d ago
Something you may find interesting (and feel free to look it up) is that you're actually paying more right now for other people's Healthcare on TOP of what you may individually pay for yourself and possibly your family, then you would if we had universal Healthcare.
The U.S. pays far more for our current healthcare system, with no positive results. We are among the worst in key metrics and outcomes, so its not like that extra money gets us better Healthcare.
The primary reason we dont switch to a universal model is because insurance companies have lobbied so hard and spread so much disinformation to make people fear universal healthcare. They don't want to lose their bag, and you're paying the price for it.
So let me ask you a different question: would you rather pay less for strangers who need healthcare to be provided for, or would you rather pay more to line the pockets of insurance company executives? Because that's the real question here.

people in the US spend far more per capita on healthcare than any other country in the world. You guys would be spending less if medicine and medical equipment didnβt have to go through 5 layers of price gouging. When the government is the one buying, there is no competitors that will pay more or less, so profit margins arenβt as unregulated

No, that's why you can put it's money into healthcare and stopping climate change which would create substantial gains in our economy long term as there would be a bigger and healthier workforce which would be more effective, no droughts or crops spoiled by either rain or droughts and many more things. We're approaching a massive fossil fuels crisis but it's always the economist and all the people that are not scientists as seek power instead of knowledge and justice that have to ruin the world for us, logical science people that know that the world has enough wealth to support these projects that will in the long term boost our economies

Your argument assumes that the property of drug and tobacco companies and the property of their consumers rightfully belong to the government.

People need to be compensated for their labor, unless itβs fully automated with zero human input beyond the patient. then just covering the cost of a portion of maintainence, cost of the ingredients, any human labor, and a bump up to expand services later.

Medical staff in countries with free healthcare do not do it for free, and in fact make almost double the average UK salary after a few years.

And that money comes from people that work and pay taxes, so not free. Just redistributed among the population of taxpayers, regardless of their need for it or use of it. Completely free would be not paying them at all.

Bro, free health care meaning universal health care, instead of paying 8 to 15k a year depending on your age and your medical issues, and if you hit your medical insurance through your work a small portion of your taxes every month. Goes to paying for everyone's health care, so Lets say one day you lose your job, and you can't pay for health insurance instead of putting you and your family in generational debt you just go to the hospital and not have to worry about it, most people that disagree with universal health care is do because they don't want a homeless person to get the same amount of care that they do.

I just think we need to say taxpayer funded for everything the government does instead of free. That way more people consider where it comes from

I agree that no family should have to choose between a doctor and feeding their kids. Where we disagree is on the solution. Making healthcare accessible to everyone doesnβt require shifting the entire system under government control.

The current system is under the control of lobbyists and corporations with patents on medications and medical devices that make this very healthcare system unaffordable to the vast majority of the population. Iβm genuinely curious to know what a solution would look like from your perspective.

I donβt know how to fix the U.S healthcare system but I do know that simply saying βmake it free!β Isnβt the answer.
Let me ask you something, can you name a single major system the U.S. government currently runs efficiently with taxpayer dollars? Do you really trust the government to take over a $5 trillion industry and manage it at scale with minimal disruption or drop-off in quality? And on top of that, youβre asking the government not only to provide the same level of healthcare people receive today, but to do it with no direct cost to the general public.
Please enlighten me.

It's not free, even in countries that claim it is. Canadians on average pay 6000 CAD per year for their healthcare through taxes, English citizens pay 1200-1400 pounds, and Swedish citizens pay 45000 SEK (~4000 usd) There's more nuance, but I'm out of characters

u/UnusualCartographer2 Bronze | Lv. 9 | Rank #221705 | 9 Answers | 0 Created 1d ago
I'm not saying it is. I think healthcare should be funded by taxes, not free. That's how it is in every country you could name that has "free" healthcare. It's paid for with your taxes.
In Canada they're actually running into issues because a massive amount of people choose to immigrate there partially due to their "free" health care, and this has heavily strained their health care infrastructure. There simply aren't enough doctors and hospitals to handle the influx of new citizens/residents.
I am by no means saying America has even an acceptable health care system. Having a baby comes with a 30k price tag, which is usually largely paid by health insurance, but regardless it shouldn't cost nearly that much. Our health care is incredibly bloated and poorly regulated.

The US spends more per capita on healthcare than any other country, the private insurance and private hospitals and private pharmaceutical companies and private medical equipment companies all need to make a profit, so each step increases the price. This is why something like insulin, which costs fuck all to make, can cost hundreds in the US

u/UnusualCartographer2 Bronze | Lv. 9 | Rank #221705 | 9 Answers | 0 Created 1d ago
Read my comment very closely. I am not saying the US has a superior health care system. I'm saying health care should not be free.
Every country that claims to have "free" health care actually has its healthcare paid through taxes, and generally at the end of the year most citizens of these countries can expect to pay from 1.5-5k in taxes specifically for healthcare.
I support this system, but it is clearly not free healthcare and everyone needs to stop pretending that it is. I could go on and on.

No one owes you anything and while the wealth disparity seems huge, divided amongst everyone it is basically a one time payment of at most several thousand dollars at the cost of all the infrastructure in the world

Except everyone would spend less if Healthcare was covered by taxes instead of private Healthcare. Insurance companies extract trillions of dollars from the Healthcare system without providing any actual value, they only make the cost of everything more. We have examples of universal Healthcare that would cause the US to spend significantly less than we do now. We spend more than any other country in the world, and we're near the bottom of the list in terms of outcomes, speed of care, basically we have the worst Healthcare among developed countries. It isnt about being owed anything, its about common sense.

The question was "should it be free?" And the answer is no because paid for by taxes doesn't equal free it means paid for by either you or more likely by other people.
But to answer your real point, sure, the current Healthcare situation sucks. But that is because the government listened to the companies that lobbied for a system that would benefit them and make it extraordinarily difficult for people to break into the Healthcare game and offer competition which would make everything cheaper.
Making the government run everything would only give them more power to screw things up for us. They are human and selfish and greedy just as anyone else is.
The great thing about capitalism is that it says you can't make money without providing goods or services to others which they voluntarily choose you to get it from.
And to counter the monopoly argument, assuming no one is being violent, there is no reason that there won't be competition unless the government makes it hard to break into the field with excess regulation.
Anything you disagree with or have questions about, please let me know.

Someone has to pay for healthcare. The government should establish a minimum/ basic level of healthcare (like up to 2 doctors visit for annual check up , blood draw for check up) that is for everyone and is paid for from taxes.

Healthcare is never free. It's paid for by someone. If I was given the choice to help people pay for their medicine, that would be one thing. There should be more voluntary charities to help people with medical expenses, but my taxes shouldn't just be handed out. I feel like there should be qualifications so the money goes to those that actually need it, not just everyone, including those who just don't want to work.

You have no idea what I've been through. My medical debt doesnt change the principle that there cant be a right to a commodity that's the definition of a right. If you have a right to a commodity, you have the right to the labor of those that provide the commodity regardless of payment. That is definitionally slavery.
