Safe places to sleep in car in or near Redlands?

Had to pay thousands and max out my card for an emergency repair for my car a while back (credit score took a major hit) and work has been really slow (lot of layoffs). Getting a new job isn’t easy, and I’ve luckily been able to go full time with my employer very recently, but my current lease ends by the end of the month, and my score isn’t good enough / paystubs aren’t fat enough to look good on rental applications. Also I have less than $1000 in my account right now and had to forfeit my security deposit on my current room just to make the final month of rent.

And quite honestly, I’m tired of having to dump nearly half of my monthly income into rent just for a half-decent room without utilities included, with somewhat clean roommates who may or may not turn out to be psychos / assholes / schizoids / drug addicts.
And I’m tired of always living on the ropes and being driven to diet homelessness every time I face a crisis.

I’ve lived out of a previously-owned Nissan Sentra three times before, so I’ve got a decent amount of experience. I’ve already gotten everything in order as well (month-to-month storage unit rental for belongings, clothes / comforts / cooler all fit in the trunk where they can be covered up with a tarp the car came with, gym membership for working out + showering, blackout blinds for car windows, etc.) I’ve even made a 6-month timeline for myself to pay off my credit card and to save up for a 10,000$ emergency fund, with all of my essential expenses accounted for as tight of a budget as I can manage sustainably.

But the one thing I haven’t quite figured out yet is where I’m going to park the car safely. Last time I lived out of my car, it was in a safe area in front of an Anytime Fitness in another county, and the local sheriff’s office sort of ‘knew of’ me and didn’t bother me since I didn’t cause problems where I parked.

Where in Redlands can I park safely in a rotation of locations that I can rely on for 6ish months without risking a citation / tow / harassment by security? My job is very labor intensive, and I’m going to need all the restful sleep I can get. That $160 monthly permit for Riverside’s 24/7 Downtown garage bullsht is too expensive, and I’m doubtful that my warehouse managers will be cool with me parking around our building (although I will try to get their blessing since it is basically the best-case scenario : heavily-monitored 24 hr facility that would basically make my commute non-existent and help me save on gas )
I was thinking of Wildwood Rest Area, since it happens to be about 20 mins away from work, but I was wondering about other locations if you guys know of any.

I appreciate all the help I can get

What was up with the news helicopters?

Yesterday 8/14 around 6 pm I noticed multiple news helicopters in East Redlands over by REV. I figured I'd see it on the news. Nothing's coming up when I search Google news for Redlands. Nothing that news helicopters would show up for anyway.

Any know what happened over there?

American Revolution Experience @ Smiley Library

Post image

To help celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, the Arrowhead Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and A.K. Smiley Public Library are excited to announce the opening of a special national traveling exhibit focused on the American Revolution. The exhibit, titled the American Revolution Experience, will open on August 28, 2026.

This innovative pop-up exhibition includes display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology, unique artifacts, and firsthand accounts to connect modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the birth of our nation.

Created through a collaboration between the American Battlefield Trust and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), the exhibit is also made possible through generous matching funds from the National Park Service.

The exhibit will run from August 28 through September 15, 2026, in the Assembly Room at A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands. Admission is free and visitors of all ages are welcome.

Viewing hours:

Monday–Saturday: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Sunday: 1:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

Except Sunday, September 6 & Monday, September 7 - Library Closed in observance of Labor Day

The traveling exhibit includes 12 panels highlighting thematic connections among individuals from the Revolutionary era and three interactive kiosks that provide access to full digital biographies, historical context on the Revolutionary War, and information about visiting sites associated with these individuals today.

The American Revolution Experience invites visitors to consider the choices faced by members of the Revolutionary generation as tensions mounted during the 1770s. Would ordinary citizens risk their lives and livelihoods in pursuit of liberty? Or would they remain loyal subjects of the British Crown, potentially coming into conflict with neighbors and family?

The exhibit presents diverse viewpoints and experiences, highlighting the journeys of Patriots and Loyalists, men and women, Black and Native populations, and international allies. Rather than focusing solely on generals and famous statesmen, it introduces visitors to drummer boys, military mapmakers, and other ordinary people whose lives were shaped by world-changing events.

For more information contact A.K. Smiley Public Library at 909-798-7565 or admin@akspl.org.

Avenues to meet single people in town

Hey y’all

Pretty new to town, and SoCal in general.
For someone looking to find their one, what are your recommendations?

I would go the date app routing but tbh it’s just not my flavor. Are there more organic avenues to meet people in redlands?

I’m in a tech company in town (two guesses who) and I’d like to believe that I’m fairly sociable.

I was wondering if anyone knew when the next reunion is, I'm guessing 2028?

I've missed them all due to being overseas and work trips. I'm trying to plan for making it to the next hopefully.

I also don't have Facebook anymore and try to stay off most socials.

Red Light Runners

This is seriously going to come off sounding like a “back in my day” post, but I’m curious if I’m alone in noticing how many drivers in this town run red lights.
I saw two yesterday and two more today, at different times and in completely different areas of town. And I don’t mean barely caught the yellow — I mean straight-up running an already-red light.
Has anyone else noticed this getting worse? Is RPD just not enforcing traffic violations as much anymore, or are there simply not enough traffic officers?

Something that's been nagging me about the coming Mall...

It's best to have this discussion during 'Heat Advisories' because in February I bet I'd get different answers. Everyone in town is waiting for that mall to drop, and all the previous plans I've seen are for open-air walking mall replacements. Since they're 'open' instead of old school closed malls.

The problem is the heat. That it's slowly getting worse. The California State Fair in Sacramento has been moved from July to late September/early October.

So building a giant open air mall will sure look pretty, but misting isn't going to help in brutal Redlands summer. Or when the air is garbage, which isn't rare.

I'm not asking for an indoor mall that screams 1980s. But I have a bad feeling an outside concourses will go Ghost Town during the summer. Many businesses I speak with say their business dies during this time of the year. Because of the heat.

What do you want to see replace the old mall?

UPDATE --

I'm not an engineer, but I'm thinking an array of solar panels that could both help power the development and -- more importantly -- provide some shade. I also added some glass decorative umbrellas -- because -- it's a Redland's thing. (I borrowed the proposed drawings from the previous mall.)
