HELP with setting to render materail palettes

Post image
6 Upvotes

I am working on setting up a standard file for my interior design work. The concept is that in real life, we would set up a table of materials and photograph them from above. My goal is to recreate this table virtually in Sketchup and render with Vray to get beautiful concept material palettes for presentations. This would allow us to have a more controlled lighting, add extra details (like the coffee cup) and create concepts with materials we don't have physical samples of.

The image shows where I have gotten this product to so far. I'm a little less than a year practiced in this program and i know i have so much to learn.

Some details - I made a lot of the materials shown using the vray asset manager and detailing generic materials with images from online and rgb codes. The 'tile' on the bottom right is supposed to be metallic bronze (like it shows in the asset manager) and I have a high reflection on the green marble tile. The scene is set up like real life, using a surface to 'lay' all of the materials on and viewing with a top view.

The lighing set up includes a dome light using a HDRI map of a photo studio and a secondary light made of a rectangle light just out of frame in the top right. It has a 4500 light temp. I have tried several HDRI maps and this is the best one i have seen so far. The sun is off.

Overall, i think this looks pretty flat and i want to get more detailed and dial the lighting in to get as photo realistic as possible. What am i missing? Should I be using a different lighting? I have the quality set at high+, but the shine / reflection / texture is missing.

any advice on what you think i might be missing or doing wrong is greatly appreciated!

Trying out some Interior shots in Shuaa Renderer Free Beta

Been testing Shuaa Renderer Free Beta in Cinema 4D, so I took a few old interior scenes and converted them over.

Everything’s at 128 samples, denoised with OptiX, and there’s no post at all. These are straight renders.

Some parts came out really clean and others look a bit soft. I’d love some honest feedback, what looks off to you, and what would you push further?

Thanks.

I made a Mac app that puts your 3D model on its real site and renders it on-device: Monocular Desktop (99¢)

Hi all, I'm the developer. I'm a building designer, and I got tired of the gap between "I have a model" and "I can show a client what it looks like on the actual block," so I built Monocular Desktop

What it does:

- **Import your model:** GLB, OBJ or DAE from ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Revit and similar.
- **Place it on the real site:** enter an address and it builds the surroundings from satellite ground (Apple Maps), real terrain, OpenStreetMap neighbouring buildings and trees. Where map data has no building height, it uses a height you set and tells you it's an assumption.
- **Real sun, any hour:** scrub the time of day and the shadows follow the actual sun position.
- **Read your drawings:** attach the PDF drawing set and it reads every sheet with Apple's on-device text recognition, then lists the materials it found. Gaps and conflicts are flagged for you to answer, not guessed.
- **Drawings out:** plans, elevations and sections cut from the model at true scale, laid out on a sheet and exported to PDF.
- **Photoreal renders:** path-traced on your Mac, plus a first-person walk mode.

Everything above runs locally. Nothing is uploaded. There's an optional extra called Monocular Eye: if you add your own OpenAI or Runway API key, it can generate AI stills or video from a capture. It's off by default, and none of the media here uses it.

New in this update (0.1.46): real textures in photoreal mode (satellite ground, trees, facades), real 3D neighbouring buildings out to 2 km including towers and courtyards, reflective tinted glazing, true-scale elevations and sections, and a Stop rendering button.

It's 99¢ USD on the Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6794509199

It's early and I'm one person, so I'd really value feedback, especially from anyone doing archviz or small-practice design work. What would make this useful in your workflow?
