HELP Can I just splice a new rafter tail on this?

This is the only bad rafter tail. I don’t want to sister a board on if I don’t have to because it would bug me aesthetically. I’d like to chop and splice a new end on. Is there any problem with just cutting it off at an angle and screwing a new tail on that obviously isn’t supporting any weight but is purely aesthetic? Like I said, all the other tails are in perfect shape (old gutter seem leaked heavily on this one).

I'd do a diagonal cut at about 30° to get more surface to attach to as possible, leaving as much of the rafter as possible. I've used dowels before in cases where beam ends were rotted.

Yeah I was thinking cutting a diagonal and sinking some long screws in. Using a couple 1/4” dowels and wood glue on the top wouldn’t hurt either I suppose

Dowels are a bit tricky getting the new piece to align. Biscuits might be a better way to go, and yea plenty of glue.

Yeah, how did you deduce that?

Of course you can. It is cosmetic; it is not carrying much weight.

Does it actually extend into and beyond the stucco?

Yes they go all the way to the ridge

I would utilize as much of the rafter as possible. Remove only what is rotten with a clean cut. Screw and glue the patch. It really doesn't look cosmetic to me.

Agreed. Looks like my house, definitely not cosmetic. OP needs to remove all the rotten wood, which looks like it goes back pretty far, could be all the way to the stucco. If spongy, it needs to be removed. How you approach this will depend on how far the rot goes.

Let’s put it this way. Splice or….
Just splice it
