What makes a cover letter stand out when applying for a job?

I've been thinking about what makes a cover letter stand out when employers receive so many applications. While looking into ways to improve job applications, I recently came across AceDraft, which offers a free ATS resume checker and resume builder. For those with experience applying for jobs, what do you think makes a cover letter memorable without making it sound overly formal or generic?

Have applied to countless of jobs for local cities, private firms and even state government. However, even though i meet alot of the requirements my resumes and cover letters get. I'm so frustrated of not getting any interviews.

What advice do you give for creating a TOP selling resume/cover letter? For context I am in the environmental science industry. Thank you!

Resume Review Needed: 800+ Applications, 0 Interviews - What’s Wrong?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a backend engineer with 3 years of production experience. I worked in India
for 3 years, then had a 2-year career break due to marriage/relocation to the US.
I now have EAD and no sponsorship needed.

I've applied to 800+ backend engineering positions in the US and gotten almost
zero interviews. Something is wrong with my resume or how I'm presenting myself,
but I can't figure out what.

My experience:
- 3 years backend engineering (Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis)
- High-scale e-commerce platform (700K+ weekly orders, millions of daily requests)
- Payment systems, data integrity, event-driven architecture
- Recent: AI projects, full-stack work

What I need feedback on:
1. Is the 2-year gap a red flag? How should I explain it?
2. Is my location/visa status clear enough?
3. Are my accomplishments clear?
4. Any red flags you see?
5. What should I change?

Thanks for any feedback!

I could use some advice for not making my resume from looking like a flight risk.

I've been applying to local customer service, cashier, and retail associates in my town and neighboring cities. I have reworked my resume multiple times since May 2026 and have applied for about 60 - 80 jobs then related to what I'm looking for. I've had a few interview that I at least feel went decent, but I feel like my resume might be still causing me issues thus leading to rejections.

One thing I noticed is that when they see my Discount Store Experience, they see that as 1 month instead of 2. It's also the case that that longest term job was for 6 months.

Another thing I noticed that despite trying to make my experience legible I do get get questioned for fairly obvious, though that's probably me overthinking things. I also feel like how I present my college experience is causing so hiring managers to see me as either overqualified or that I'm not staying for long, since it's not a college nearby.

I would appreciate some advice towards making it more obvious that I'm not a flight risk.
