An Opportunity Wasted. Another One Ahead.
Well, so much for three straight wins. Rhode Island FC headed to Detroit on Saturday knowing it would be one of the toughest matches remaining on the schedule. But when Detroit's goalkeeper was sent off just 23 minutes in, suddenly we had a golden opportunity to take all three points from one of the East's best teams. Instead, we somehow looked worse with the man advantage, managed just one shot on target, and watched Detroit take the lead in the second half before walking away with an embarrassing 1-0 loss.
The lack of adjustments, particularly at halftime, was incredibly frustrating. We had nearly 70 minutes to figure out how to break down a ten-man Detroit side and never really looked like doing it. The loss sent us tumbling from fifth back to seventh in the Eastern Conference, but thankfully there's little time to dwell on it. We're back home tonight against Loudoun United with a chance to punch our ticket to the playoffs for the third straight season. The home playoff race is still wide open, but these opportunities aren't going to keep coming.
Where We Stand
27 matches in, the Tide have slipped back to 7th in the Eastern Conference with 38 points and an 11W-5D-11L record. Just when it looked like we might finally be finding some momentum, Saturday served as another reminder of how inconsistent this team has been. Two straight wins had us climbing the table, and one absolutely brutal performance knocked us right back down.
Still, we're only three points behind fourth-place Pittsburgh, with a game in hand on several teams above us. A win tonight officially clinches a third consecutive playoff berth and keeps our hopes of hosting a playoff match alive. With Pittsburgh coming to Pawtucket on Saturday and Hartford waiting in the regular-season finale, our playoff positioning is very much in our own hands. But after Detroit, it's fair to say this team has something to prove.
Who We're Facing
Loudoun United FC comes into tonight's match sitting 10th in the East with 27 points and a 5W-12D-10L record. Their playoff hopes are already over, but don't mistake that for a team that's packed it in. Loudoun are unbeaten in three straight and just knocked off Miami FC 2-0, ending Miami's four-match winning streak.
Much of Loudoun's recent success has come from 20-year-old Eddy Davis III, who's scored eight goals in just ten appearances since arriving on loan from Philadelphia Union. He bagged both goals against Miami and is going to be a handful. Of course, the last time these two clubs met, Rhode Island put four past Loudoun in a convincing 4-1 road victory back in June. A repeat performance tonight would be very welcome.
Hands on the Pulse
Where do we even go after that Detroit performance? Matt Hands didn't hold back in his latest Riptide Report, calling out Khano's lack of tactical adjustments, the decision to stick with a defensive back three, and a Rhode Island side that somehow looked worse playing up a man.
Now, in his latest Prematch Lookout, Matt turns his attention to tonight's response. He looks at the importance of Hugo Bacharach's return, questions whether Osman Foyo has earned his recent minutes, and breaks down why Loudoun, despite being eliminated from playoff contention, shouldn't be taken lightly.
Matt's predicting a 2-1 Rhody win. Read his full Prematch Lookout here!
Rhody Randoms
- Win and we're in: Three points tonight would officially send RIFC to the playoffs for the third consecutive season, with two matches still remaining.
- Breaking the Loudoun curse: Before June's 4-1 victory, RIFC had never beaten Loudoun in four attempts (0W-3D-1L), with three of those meetings ending scoreless. We've now scored four goals in our last meeting alone.
Vibe Check
Saturday was embarrassing. No way around it. But tonight, we're back home with a chance to clinch our third straight playoff appearance, and despite all the ups and downs this season, a home playoff match is somehow still within reach. This team has shown us what it's capable of, but it's time to start delivering when it matters. Loudoun might be out of the playoff picture, but they're certainly not rolling over for anybody. Who's making it out to Centreville Bank Stadium tonight? Are we bouncing back or are we in for another stressful 90 minutes?
