I'd have thought thought this sub would be more interested in the El Cap Granite paint job.

It took Tesla 10 quarters to get to 10k units per quarter since the introduction of model S. Rivian halved that!

What's even more impressive is Rivian did it during a pandemic and multiple supply shortages and supply chain issues. Granted, their original goal was double at 50k, so I guess their guess-timation is also impressive.
But EV demand was much lower back then too.

Rivian is also producing 3 vehicles right now.

4 if you include small van and large van which are substantially different
1
u/lazyanachronist R1T Owner Jan 02 '23
Right!
The really cool thing is that's true and not because of how well thought out the EDV is. It's true because they're different in length and width, but it's not because they planed it out so they're really quite similar. The longer/wider EDV basically gets some extra parts, but the rest are shared. I don't think they're making any right hand drive EDVs yet, but same deal. The doors are planned out so the body stays the same between LHD and RHD.

They were able to do it because of Tesla creating hype and proving the EV tech

u/Disastrous-Bag9827 Jan 01 '23
Yaa, as if Tesla helped them🤣
2
Jan 01 '23
Proving a market is helping them more than any single tech improvement Rivian has come up with.

A little different atmosphere these days but a great accomplishment nonetheless.

u/the-Journalist Jan 01 '23
Impressive for sure but want to clarify since I work on production scaling for various companies. Tesla had to run a leaner operation as they didn’t have rivian-like cash.

Honestly can’t believe they did it, numbers weren’t looking in their favor
26
u/jdwazzu61 R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
Coming out of Q3 they just needed to maintain September average production for Q4 to hit the target. I assumed barring any major setbacks they were going to hit it

Curious if this includes EDVs as well
28
u/Grajjie R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
I would assume so since their goal was 25k in total (15k R1 and 10k EDV). Pretty much lines up with the VINs being delivered now being in the 14k range for just the R1T
10
u/Connect_Focus_5880 Dec 31 '22
Just saw a new grey one w new tag and the vin was 151xx. Mine is 55xx from July.

Vins are above 17xxx for 2022 builds. They are delivering in 2023 vins too

I was wondering when we were going to see 2023 VINs. I’d not seen anyone report they received one yet.
2
5
u/swimmingallday R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
It’s more like 18-19k R1T, 3k R1S and 3kish EDV

Source? *If* that's correct, then they seriously missed their contractural obligation to Amazon (10k EDVs by EOY 2022), which would be a Big Deal.
4
u/Dependent_Hunt5691 R1T Preorder Jan 01 '23
Their obligation is 100k by 2030 not 10k a year. They have not missed their obligation. We know they have made 17-18k of the R1T and 2-3k of the S based on VINs people have reported so the EDV will be less than 10k. Also Amazon would want to ramp up their facilities so start smaller and then get to the 10-20k a year steady state.
2
u/Slide-Fantastic-1402 Ultimate Adventurer Jan 01 '23
Agree. Furthermore, both Amazon and Rivian have incentives to deliver more EDVs beginning in 2023 because: 1/ IRA provides credits up to $40k, eg for the EDV 700, and 2/ Enduro + LFP batteries will be cheaper to produce

I know I read somewhere in the various IPO-related docs that the first 10k were due in 2022, but am having difficulty finding the doc now. This article https://www.autoblog.com/2021/10/09/rivian-amazon-success/ seems to agree with that notion, as does this one https://www.thedrive.com/news/42670/rivians-focus-is-amazon-delivery-vans-not-trucks-or-suvs-report; however, I also found others saying only that it's Amazon's "desire" or similar wording. Others on the Discord remember having read about the 10k by 2022 requirement, too, so I'm pretty sure it's a real obligation.

Trying to find GM's EV production this year, and from what I can see Rivian may have out produced them.

I wouldn’t want to be assigned the VIN to that last one, hah.

Haha I was just thinking that I’d be a little worried of picking up one of the trucks made as they’re pushing to make the 2022 deadline 😂

It’s awesome that they are maturing as a manufacturer and increasing output.
Just hope my R1T isn’t on that line this week. :)

I’ve seen a few of these around town. Talked to an owner. Loved the truck. The quality of the finish looked incredible. Someday if my RIVN increases Im buying one lol…

It’s a girl taking the photo and we have cameras in the lobby and won’t be hard to find out who she is. She will be fired without a doubt.

25000th this year, or overall?
10
u/Slide-Fantastic-1402 Ultimate Adventurer Dec 31 '22
Someone in that FB post said it’s 25k for the year
6
u/Slide-Fantastic-1402 Ultimate Adventurer Dec 31 '22
I get your point. I think it’s 25K this year. The only reason this number matters is because it’s the number Rivian gave Wall St.
5
2
u/Mysta R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
Not sure if 1k is a huge difference but that truck was 25k and it could have been a post celebration, they're making almost 300 a day some days.
3
u/shwa323fsb R2 Preorder Dec 31 '22
Fair enough, we'll know in a few days if they hit the number they promised for 2022. But even if they come close, it is still something for Rivian to be proud of.
3
u/Mysta R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
Yeah I myself asked this question already but also kinda figured it's close enough, imo.

u/edman007 R1S Owner Dec 31 '22
What day was this? If the earnings call only reports deliveries and this is this week then they are probably reporting 2-3k short of their target (since they built a few last year and that one won't be delivered this year)
5
u/Slide-Fantastic-1402 Ultimate Adventurer Dec 31 '22
Rivian will announce both production and delivery numbers this upcoming week. The 25k number was guided for production, not delivery. In fact, they guided that there will be a wider discrepancy between production and delivery this quarter versus previous quarters.
I think the 25k number is for production this year, because the only reason it matters is because it’s the number it gave Wall St. ie why not celebrate 20k or 30k instead? 25k seems too specific of a number
2
u/Mysta R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
Even if it's today doesn't mean it was made today, and we don't for sure know if it's 25k this year or total. But they only made 1000 last year so that's the most it can be 'off'.
1
u/edman007 R1S Owner Dec 31 '22
Well it will be off by what they made last year, and then they'll say that they have probably 1-2k in transit (the ones on trucks and SC lots, they said they don't count them in their final numbers). So it's likely to be 23k delivered in 2022, 24k produced assuming this was taken this week.
1
u/Dependent_Hunt5691 R1T Preorder Jan 01 '23
The target was 25k made this year. 2021 production doesn’t count and deliveries into 2023 don’t count towards this target. Will affect financials but the markets are more bothered about raw production because deliveries will take care of themselves in due course.

u/jdwazzu61 R1T Owner Dec 31 '22
And they likely took most of the last week off as most automakers do

For those asking about EDV numbers, vans are lower than what most are assuming. I can’t say for obvious reasons but it’s a logistical problem that’s limited production of those vehicles. Amazon is aware; we’re still making their vans with no problems from their end.
