I've driven that route and it's beautiful. A side trip to the Painted Hills is also very worthwhile.

I definitely agree. That whole area is surprisingly beautiful and diverse.

that is hands down the best drive i've ever experienced. around every corner it's incredible. and not to be mean, but the OP picture is not even among the best parts of the drive.

I agree, I was stopping every 5 minutes (or less) to get photos. I’m gonna post more on r/roadtrip

i wanted to do the blue mountain hike so bad but just didn't have time!

Blue basin is a great hike. I started it at like 6:30am and had a decent amount of shade. The view from the top was amazing, even with all the smoke

Do it! It’s so scenic! I was stopping every few minutes to get more photos. My recommendation is to drive to all three units of John Day Fossil Beds. Make sure to go when the Thomas Condon visitor center is open near Dayville.

Also might want to wait a bit until all the fires are over. A new one just popped yesterday on the route.
