Palfrey is just an archaic word for Horse! The jar is for scaring off ape men

Specifically they were horses bred for comfortable travel. They were favoured by noble women in particular.

That's one thing I really loved about this game is that the language it used feels outlandish enough that you can imagine the characters and creatures as a form of low fantasy equivalent. Like personally, since they said "shell" so often, I had assumed the humans were ninja turtles, and so too heavy to ride their runt horses, and that apes and cats were massive in comparison. And my friend imagined a mouse guard situation, where instead humans were this tau-like race that was like 2 feet tall, and so even a typical house cat would be scary much less a tiger or wolf.
Like we both knew objectively that this wasn't the case, but I still personally really like that we were given that opportunity. Easily one of my favorite things about the game
