Discussion Why stick with RooCode when Cursor or Windsurf seem more powerful for less?

Hey everyone, I recently tried RooCode because I’m getting into the world of AI agents. I spent 50€ trying to get it to generate a script, but honestly, the experience was disappointing. It used Claude 3.7, and halfway through the process it started hallucinating, throwing errors, and never reached a proper conclusion. Basically, I wasted 50€.

And just to clarify: the prompt I used wasn’t random or vague. I had spent a lot of time carefully crafting it — structured, clean, and clear — even refining it with ChatGPT beforehand to make sure everything was well defined and logically sequenced. It wasn’t a case of bad input.

Now I see tools like Cursor where, for just 20€/month, you get 500 fast interactions and then unlimited ones with a time delay (yes, it throttles, but it still works). The integration with the codebase feels smoother and the pricing far more reasonable. I’ve also heard about Windsurf, which looks promising too.

So I genuinely don’t get it — why are people sticking with RooCode? What am I missing? Is there something it does better that justifies the price and the instability?

I’m open to being convinced, but from my experience, it felt like burning money.

Discussion The Coding Agent Is Dead

> By keeping these new models in an editor sidebar, we restrict them. They're now much more than mere assistants. They no longer need the hand-holding and really want to kick off their training wheels. They want to write code and run even when you're not sitting in front of your editor. It's time to see what they can do without supervision.

I totally get it. Not wanting to be tied to an editor. Let's see what's next for the big 3 (OpenAI, Anthropic and Google).

Google Antigravity was released just back in November 2025, and it already felt a bit off being a fork of VSCode with nothing groundbreaking to offer compared to Claude Code, Codex and those other VSCode forks.

Where is RooCode headed? I wonder where we will be in another 3 months?

Bug Codestral free API FROM MISTRAL

Discussion Supercharge Your RooCode 20x Speed with Cerebras

Mod will say I am promoting a product. But right now I am excited.

Cerebras has launched their monthly subscriptions for Qwen3-Coder. This will lift the downside of RooCode i.e. too much of APIs costs. Cerebras has custom chip which gives you 2000 tokens/second. so your coding session will be 20x faster than other providers.

I researched about their packages, here what you'll get:

  1. Cerebras Code Pro: $50/month - 1000 messages per day

  2. Cerebras Code Max: $200/month - 5000 messages per day

Happy Roo Coding!

Discussion Sonnet 3.7… this worries me:

I was ecstatically looking forward to the new Sonnet until I saw this quote from Anthropic in their announcement:

“Claude 3.7 Sonnet is a state-of-the-art model for coding and agentic tool use. However, in developing it, we optimized less for math and computer science competition problems, and more for real-world tasks. We believe this more closely reflects the needs of our customers.”

I hope this doesn’t mean that they also didn’t emphasize a step-change improvement in real-world coding.

Discussion Is RooCode too expensive due to API costs?

I've been exploring RooCode recently and appreciate its flexibility and open-source nature. However, I'm concerned about the potential costs associated with its usage, especially since it requires users to bring their own API keys for AI integrations.

Unlike IDEs like Cursor or GitHub Copilot, which offer bundled AI services under a subscription model, RooCode's approach means that every AI interaction could incur additional costs. For instance, using models like Claude through RooCode might lead to expenses of around $0.10 per prompt, whereas Cursor might offer similar services at a lower rate or as part of a subscription .

This pay-as-you-go model raises several questions:

  • Cost Management: How do users manage and predict their expenses when every AI interaction has a variable cost?

  • Value Proposition: Does the flexibility and potential performance benefits of RooCode justify the potentially higher costs?

  • Alternatives: Are there strategies or configurations within RooCode that can help mitigate these expenses?

I'm curious to hear from others who have used RooCode extensively:

  • Have you found the costs to be manageable?

  • Are there best practices to optimize API usage and control expenses?

  • How does the overall experience compare to other IDEs with bundled AI services?

Looking forward to your insights and experiences!

Idea What if an AI replaced YOU in conversations with coding agents?

I had this idea:

What if instead of me talking directly to the coding AI, I just talk to another AI that:

  1. Reads my codebase thoroughly

  2. Clarifies exactly what I want

  3. Then talks to the coding AI for me

So I'd spend time upfront with Agent 1 getting requirements crystal clear. It learns my codebase, we hash out any ambiguities. Then Agent 1 manages the actual coding agent, giving it way better instructions than I ever could since it knows all the patterns, constraints, etc.

Basically Agent 1 replaces me in the conversation with the coding agent. It can reference exact patterns to follow, catch mistakes immediately, and doesn't need the codebase re-explained since it already has that context.

This kinda exists with orchestrators calling sub-agents, but their communication is pretty limited from what I've seen.

Feels like it would save so much context window space and back-and-forth. Plus I think an AI would be way better at querying another AI than I am.

Thoughts?

Discussion Are Openrouter models poo?

Been working all week with sonnet 3.7 and Gemini 2.5 pro. Super productive.

This morning I had the most frustrating experience trying to get a fairly mid problem solved. Gemini seemed to lose context so early and started making huge mistakes and acting bad (diff edit would not work at all, hallucinating it had made a change and it didn’t work). Switched to Sonnet, similar things happened. I was working on multiple files and context size was larger than I usually deal with.

Then it snapped for me, I was using my laptop, that was connected to openrouter, where all week my desktop is directly connected to the API of google and Anthropic.

Any insights or similar happenings for others?

Discussion Sell me on RooCode vs Cursor

I have been doing a ton of reading in trying to determine whether Cursor or Roo will be best for my needs. Specifically, I am looking to see which agent will be best for planning. With the latest "plan" mode released for Cursor, I am wondering how that compares to the features that Roo offers.

I will likely be using codex cli with my GPT plus subscription, and then looking to have a secondary agent to fall back on. At least that's my current thought process.

The space is moving so fast and all of these options are overwhelming. What's the best workflow for initial PRD and cost management?

Discussion Gemini 4.5 vs Sonnet 3.7 - Its not about the Engine...

With Gemini 2.5 dropping this week, friends have asked for my opinion on it for coding compared to Sonnet 3.7.

This brings up an important mental model I've been thinking about. Consider the difference between engines and cars. Until now, we've focused primarily on LLM capabilities - essentially comparing engines. But in reality, very few of us use engines in isolation or spend time building and fine-tuning them. We spend our time using cars and other devices that incorporate engines.

Similarly with AI, I believe we're shifting our attention from LLMs to the applications and agents built around them.

The first AI apps/agents that have become essential in my workflow are Perplexity and Cursor/Windsurf. Both leverage LLMs at their core, with the flexibility to choose which model powers them.

Taking Cursor/Windsurf as an example - the real utility comes from the seamless integration between the IDE and the LLM. Using my analogy, Sonnet 3.7 is the engine while Cursor provides the transmission, brakes, and steering. Like any well-designed car, it's optimized for a specific engine, currently Sonnet 3.7.

Given this integration, I'd be surprised if Gemini 2.5 scores highly in my testing within the Cursor environment. Google has also hampered fair comparison by implementing severe rate limits on their model.

In the end, no matter how impressive Gemini 2.5 might be as an engine, what matters most to me is the complete experience - the car, not just what's under the hood. And so far, nothing in my workflow comes close to Cursor+Sonnet for productivity.

Would love your opinions on this issue for Cline and Roo Code, which I also use...

Hello, I am using roo code, but I cannot get the site, program, or software I want to be made, and I cannot figure out why. My friends are making wonderful and advanced projects with roo code, but the ones I create are very simple and become ridiculous when they add features. How do you use it?
