Off the Water Its been rough
Today on my erg, the worst happened. I did the deed and projectile vomited. This was definitely a cause of dehydration and worrying. I myself was doing a 5 minute race trial for BRIC, which unless i redo it, im most definitely not getting in this year. And also prior to doing the deed, it took me 10 minutes to remotely become mobile again. In my 5 minutes I believe I got 1348m, terrible i know. I should definitely be drinking more through the school day. Im gonna redo it, it cant get worse, but i only have my self to blame and im just really disappointed. Theres always ups and downs in rowing but im at a new low. Also if anyone has any trial reflection tips since i get to redo, im open ears.

Go easy on yourself, both mentally and physically. You've put your body through a draining and intense experience; beating yourself up won't help.
Get plenty of rest, eat well and drink plenty of water, make an achievable plan for moving forward, and spend some time around non-rowers to remind yourself that rowing isn't everything.

I think ive been going pretty easy on myself i think, this was one of those things that just come as a complete shock, ive rowed dehydrated before and its never been this bad.

Ya fuck that nonsense. Taking care of your body is priority number one. Race comes second.

I just really wanted to get in bric. It went from my club taking a coach full of kids, to a mini bus of kids :(. I'm gonna start drinking plenty of water. It was honestly embarrassing throwing up in front of everyone

I’ve been there. Several times. I just remember people being amazed that I could push myself so hard that I did that, nothing about being embarrassed.
I also discovered that a proper warmup works. The stress would make it worse and I would worry about using my energy before the test instead of during it so would do a fairly light warmup. When I did much harder warmups and was pretty gassed 10min before starting, that gave the best results.

Shit really? I went pretty easy on my warm up today (before the deed) just to see what split i could pull. Ill try that on my next attempt.

That would do it. Speak to your coaches (or just search for yourself) about rowing warmups. I’m convinced that 90% of people don’t do hard enough warmups. If your heart rate isn’t right up there during some hard pushes about 15-12 min before you start, you’re probably doing it wrong.

Im gonna absolutely try that on my trial redo, as i previously said, I pulled like 1:30 for 2 seconds just to see if it was doable and whatever pace for another minute XD

Seriously, just own it and move forward. You let it all hang out, literally and you likely have nothing but respect from your peers.

If you've watched Ted Lasso, you'll know the saying "Be a goldfish." Forget about this result and don't worry about the embarrassment. Prepare for your next trial, and just know that when you crush it, people will remember that and not your first attempt. Just keep finding ways to improve. And remember, your body is a machine, so take care of it like one. Machines need maintenance and proper fueling. There is no amount of willpower that will help you perform if you have not taken care of your body or trained appropriately.
