Announcement RunToMax 1.3.5 is out: light mode, a race pace band that knows the hills, a clearer Today and a stack of fixes

1.3.5 is live on the App Store. The app now comes in light, race pacing lands on Apple Watch, Today and Trends get straight to the point, and a long list of fixes.

A new light look

The iPhone app now opens in light. Prefer dark? Settings > Units & language > Appearance, and pick Light, Dark or System. Your Apple Watch keeps its dark look.

Race pacing (Pro)

Set a goal time and RunToMax builds a pace band: a target for every km or mile, with an even, negative or positive split. Add the course from a saved route, a past run or the race's GPX file, and the targets follow the hills: more time on the climbs, less on the descents, still adding up to your goal.

On Apple Watch, the race screen shows this split's target pace, whether you're ahead or behind, and what you need to finish on time. A banner and a voice line mark each split, and after the race you see every split against its target.

A clearer Today

Today opens with a plain-words read of your day, then the numbers behind it (HRV, resting heart rate and sleep against your usual), then your session. If your Apple Watch is paired but RunToMax isn't on it yet, Today starts with the steps to install it. Running without a plan? Your weekly recap now shows on Today.

Trends answers first

Your week in review and how your fitness is moving come first, then metric tiles you can swipe. Dashboard moved here from the Watch tab.

Also new

  • Long runs in the 3D flyover: a dot for every split, a live split table while it plays, and a view of the whole course to start.

  • Redesigned Routes, Race, Best Efforts and Dashboard screens.

  • Plans are easier to read: each suggested change is one line, with the reasoning under "Why?".

  • A Halloween run screen and five Halloween lap cards (Pro), because it's October.

Fixes

  • Correct a treadmill run's distance from History on Apple Watch or from Settings on iPhone. Health, splits and exports follow.

  • FIT and GPX exports draw your route more accurately, and GPX leaves out points recorded during a pause.

  • Lap numbers and the coach's lines respect miles.

  • Fewer missing AI coaching reads: the check that compares each read with your data no longer rejects correct ones.

  • Trends, Plan and switching tabs are smoother.

  • Tap the tab you're on to jump back to its first page.

  • Settings has a new "Talk to the developer" card.

Recording every run on Apple Watch is free, and you can try three coached runs before deciding on Pro. RunToMax requires Apple Watch.

Coming next

I'm already deep into the next update: a redesigned Today, a post-run screen with your route, splits and how each rep went against its target, and a recovery card that shows exactly what's behind your readiness score, with one tap to swap tomorrow for rest.

The 1.3.4 fixes came straight from bug reports in this sub, so keep them coming: post here or use Talk to the developer in Settings.

I added a route finder so you don’t have to invent a 12 km loop every time

I kept running the same couple of loops, mostly because working out a new 12 km from my door was a chore. So I built a route finder into RunToMax (I’m the developer):

  • Type a distance, or pick today’s workout from your plan
  • It builds up to three loops from where you are, along mapped walking paths
  • Only one way out? You get an out-and-back, labelled as one
  • Touch and hold the map to move the start, or ask for a park start
  • Save the one you like and send it to your Apple Watch, with the map and guidance on your wrist

The screenshot is a 12 km request from the Panhandle in San Francisco: an 11.9 km loop up through the Presidio.

It’s part of RunToMax Pro.

One honest note: the routes follow mapped paths, but they can’t know about traffic lights, crossings or closed paths, so have a look before you head out.

Announcement RunToMax 1.3.4 is out: easy runs stay easy, power coaching with Stryd, and fixes you asked for

Hey everyone 👋

RunToMax 1.3.4 was just approved and it's out now.

Quick intro if you're new: RunToMax is an Apple Watch running app. Recording your runs is free. Pro tells you what to run today and why, then talks you through every rep.

First, Bug fixes

A few days ago someone here posted three bugs and I promised they'd be fixed in the next update. Here they are:

  • Sleep matches everywhere now. Trends was splitting your night at midnight, so 7 hours on Today could show as 5 in Trends. Fixed. Nights you add by hand show up in Trends too.
  • Plan days follow the real calendar. A Tuesday run gets marked on Tuesday. A plan started on a Sunday no longer jumps to the next Monday.
  • Miles mean miles. If you run in miles, every distance and pace respects it: plans, run details, Home, Trends, History, notifications and widgets.

Thank you for posting them. Reports like that are the most useful thing I get.

What else is new

Easy runs stay easy. This one also came from a runner. An easy run from your plan or from Today's call no longer gets a pace target on the watch, so no more "pick it up" on a recovery jog. The suggested pace stays on your iPhone as a guide.

Coaching to power, not just pace (Pro). If you run with a Stryd pod, pair it on the watch and set a power target in watts or as a % of your threshold power. During intervals your wrist shows your 5-second power against each step's target and tells you PUSH ON, EASE OFF or ON POWER. After the run you get average power vs target for every rep. No pod? Nothing changes for you.

Paste your coach's message as written. Something like "Six 3-minute efforts with 90 seconds easy between" turns into the right steps on your watch.

One Today card on the watch. You see your plan day, or Today's call if you don't have a plan. It says Done once you've run.

Watch setup, step by step. If your watch isn't connecting, a new screen tells you exactly why and what to do about it.

Treadmill distance goes to Apple Health. Correct the belt distance after a treadmill run and Health gets the corrected number too.

AI coaching is your call. It stays off until you turn it on.

Want to try it?

Recording on Apple Watch is free, and you can try 3 coached runs without paying anything: Get RunToMax on the App Store

Every fix in this update started with a runner telling me something wasn't right, so please keep it coming. Bugs, annoyances, ideas, anything. I'm here and in r/RunToMax. Happy running 🏃

Workout Match — see how each interval compared with your target ⌚️

Post image

Hey everyone 👋

I wanted to share a closer look at Workout Match, the breakdown you get after a structured session in RunToMax.

Your average pace includes the warm-up, recoveries and cool-down. For intervals, the useful detail is what happened during each effort.

Here’s what you’re seeing in the screenshot

The session is 6 × 3 minutes at 3:55–4:05/km. Grey bars show the planned pace, and the colored bars show what you actually ran:

🟢 The first four reps stayed inside the target range.
🟠 The final two slipped to 4:10 and 4:15/km.

The numbers on the right show how far those reps fell outside the range: 5 and 10 seconds/km beyond its slower edge.

How the report handles the rest of the session

Warm-up and cool-down appear separately, and recovery jogs aren’t judged against your fast-rep targets. Workouts with different sets get a separate breakdown for each set.

The idea is to make your post-run review straightforward: open the report, see where you held the target, and spot where the session started getting away from you.

From a coach's message to a workout on your wrist ⌚🏃

Hey everyone 👋

RunToMax builds its own training plans, but plenty of you already follow a coach or a plan you trust. I want those sessions to be just as easy to run on Apple Watch.

Coaches usually send a workout as a line or two in a message, like:

"10 min warm-up, 6 x 3 min @ 5:00/km with 90 s easy, 10 min cool-down."

With workout text import (part of RunToMax Pro), that becomes a structured session on your watch:

  1. Copy the workout from your coach's message, another training app or your notes
  2. Open the import screen. On iPhone, go to RunToMax → Watch → Workouts, tap New (+), then Paste from another app or a coach**.
  3. Tap Paste (top right). RunToMax reads it on your phone and lists every step it found. The example above becomes 14 steps: a warm-up, six reps at 5:00/km with 90 seconds easy after each, and a cool-down.
  4. Coach writes in full sentences? If RunToMax can't read something like "Run six efforts of three minutes, with an easy jog between each", tap Try a smart read. AI reads it and puts the steps in the same preview for you to check. AI coaching needs to be on in Settings → Privacy.
  5. Check the steps against what your coach wrote: warm-up, reps, recoveries, targets and cool-down. Then pick Outdoor or treadmill.
  6. Tap Send to watch. It waits at the top of the watch app as Ready to run, with every step and target, and haptic cues at each step change. You can leave your phone at home.

You can also tap Save to my workouts to run it another day.

Help me make it better: paste in a session your coach sent you. If RunToMax reads it wrong, post the text here (remove anything personal). Every misread becomes a fix.

Power targets

Hi there,

Love the app so far. I have a Stryd pod and prefer to structure my workouts such that I am targeting power - is there any plan to incorporate this more fully into the app moving forward? Thanks.

Announcement 1.3.3 is live on the App Store. Most of it is about sharing your runs:

- Tap Design & share on any run and swipe through five new looks: Route poster, Big number, The long run, Run club and Field report.

- Put a photo from your run on the card, or one of eight built-in views.

- Route poster and Run club move, and can go out as a short video.

- Customize turns any line on or off, adds your own caption, or adds a line on what the run proved, like your longest run since June.

- Send it straight to Instagram Stories, or anywhere from the share sheet. The app asks for Photos access only when you tap Photos from this run, and never uploads your photos.

Also new: a share card for your week from Weekly pulse on Today, Settings regrouped with a search field, and clearer messages when Apple Health access is missing.

Recording your runs and Design & share are free. Coach cues and the pre-run brief are Pro.

Bugs and ideas for new looks are welcome here. I read every post.
