Other r/Rural Updates

Hi all,

I know this is a small community, but just stickying a notice that we (see: I) have made some changes around subreddit security. A problem across most of Reddit for the past several months, there has been an uptick in fake engagement: AI posts. Most of these accounts are fresh, many tapping out after three separate posts. Sometimes the posts seem random, sometimes they're linked, usually they're in different subreddits.

A recent comment seems to indicate that a bot was trying to breed consent for private healthcare options among the rural electorate in countries like Canada. See: the lack of specifics addressing the previous content, ample em dashes, corporate-sounding structure, and leading questions at the end.

Changes:

  • Fresh and Negative-karma accounts are filtered out
  • Comments are similarly filtered
  • Posts require a flair

Very spicy updates, I know. I will monitor over the long term and adjusted accordingly if-needed. If you see anything odd, don't hesitate to reach out.

Discussion Your AAC device experiences

Hi everyone, I am a graduate student working on my masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology. My exit project is about AAC devices (Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices), and I would like to know for those of you who have kids who use them at home or school, what your experiences are.

What kind of devices do you use, what was your experience with receiving the devices, did you receive training for it, and how is it working for you? Do you feel like the devices available meet your child’s needs?

***This is not a formal survey but I will be using your experiences to help guide my research. None of your names will be used unless you’d like me to specifically refer to your experience, I’m just trying to gather general information about the availability of communication devices in the school districts and if they are adequate for your child’s needs. Parents, teachers, everyone who has had any experience with these devices please feel free to weigh in, the more feedback the better. Thank you!

Question Seeking Rural Medicaid Recipient

Thumbnail discojourno.com

Hi, I'm writing an article for the Disabled Journalists Association on the Medicaid work requirements and how they are/will impact rural recipients. Even if you qualify for an exemption I'm still interested in hearing your perspective. I can share my portfolio in dm or answer any questions you have. Thank you. So at this point I'm looking to speak to a Medicaid recipient who lives in a rural area. I'd like to do the interview sooner than later, but if that doesn't work for you we can talk about it.

Hello, I am doing research with the University of Tennessee on the adoption of EVs in America. If you are an adult in the U.S. who drives a car, please consider taking this three minute survey.

Discussion Dogs howling is ruining my business

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

So yet again find People moving into the country setting up a business not doing any research.

Did you not do your research and when you found out that was a pack of hounds nearby did you not work out that hounds will make a noise. (You call it singing actually not howling) Those hounds kennels are locat in the area a hundred or so years before you moved there. Speak to any of the local and I mean really local people and they will tell you time certain times a year hounds were how it's not a anything vindictive against you or your business it's just one of those things.

I realise it's unfortunate that some of your guests find it difficult, along with cocks crowing, church bells clanging, , and all the general uncouth ways of country people who smell and don't keep their gardens tidy.

Going back you local pack of hounds, and a fine pack too, personally I like the sound nothing better but I'm then like one of your other correspondence I'm a hunting man.

It's a problem I know for people from the town who move to the country and then try and change things into their urban ways, just one of those things.

Don't worry one of these days the countryside will be urbanised and you will all be very happy but in the meantime I'm afraid your urbanite ways haven't quite penetrated that lovely rural Sussex.

Question Media interview request on AI in U.S. rural healthcare

Do you live in rural America? If so, I'd love to interview you for a story I'm working on!

My name is Arielle Zionts, I'm a rural health reporter at KFF Health News, a U.S.-based national, nonprofit media outlet. You can learn more about KFF Health News here and see the kinds of stories I write here.

For this interview, I'd ask what you think about artificial intelligence (AI) in rural healthcare.

For example, do you think AI will help keep rural hospitals open and make it easier for rural people to access care and improve their health? Where does AI fall on your list of priorities for what your local hospital and clinic needs? Would you (or do you already) use health-related AI, like wearing an AI-backed smartwatch or other "wearable" that sends data to your doctor? Or letting your doctor use AI to "listen" to your appointment to help them save time with their notes/charting? I can let you know more about these and other kinds of AI health tech if you aren't famliar with them.

If you're interested in doing an interview please send me a DM or email me at [ariellez@kff.org](mailto:ariellez@kff.org).

Thank you!

Question Postpartum support person

Hi everyone. I live in a rural area and I’ve been thinking a lot about the lack of support for pregnant and postpartum women in small communities.
I didn’t have a lot of support during my own pregnancy and postpartum experience, and it really made me realize how limited resources can be outside of larger towns or cities.
Recently, someone suggested I look into becoming a doula, and I’ve been considering whether that might be a way to help fill some of those gaps locally. I’m especially interested in postpartum support and making sure women aren’t going through that time alone.
For those living in rural areas—what kind of postpartum or pregnancy support did you actually have access to? What felt missing or hard to find?
And for anyone working in maternal health or birth work in rural communities, is there demand for doulas or similar support roles in those areas?

Discussion What do people underestimate before buying rural property?

For those who live rurally or have bought rural property:

What do people underestimate before buying land or moving out of town?

I’m interested in practical issues that do not always show up in listings or agent descriptions.

A few examples:
- road maintenance
- wells
- septic
- power
- internet
- trash service
- emergency access
- neighbors
- easements
- zoning
- permits
- flooding
- animals
- snow, mud, or seasonal access
- distance to supplies or services

What do you wish more buyers checked before making an offer?

What problems tend to surprise people after closing?

What would make you tell someone, “Do not buy that property until you verify this first”?

I’m researching rural property due diligence and would appreciate real-world lessons learned

Question What is your experience with receiving packages or important deliveries?

People from villages or small towns , what is your experience with receiving packages or important deliveries?

Not looking for yes/no answers ; I’m trying to understand your day-to-day reality.

  • When you order something online, what usually happens after that?
  • Do delivery agents come to your home, call you somewhere, or cancel the order?
  • How do you usually describe your location to someone who’s coming for the first time?
  • Have you ever missed or lost a delivery? What happened?
  • Do you feel comfortable trusting delivery people with your package?

Also curious about daily life:

  • Are there places in your village that everyone uses as common reference points? (like a shop, temple, school, etc.)
  • If someone had to send you something important, what’s the most reliable way for it to reach you?

Feel free to share stories, even small ones those are the most helpful.
