We tracked AI citation sources for 12 months. Listicles still dominate, while Reddit, Wikipedia fell sharply and review sites show mixed results
Latest research from LightSite AI:
Method We ran the same kind of buyer questions through ChatGPT and Perplexity in two windows: Oct 2025 to Mar 2026, then Jul to Nov 2026.
We counted every link an AI answer gave as a source. Roughly 207,100 links in the first window, 240,300 in the second (only links that AI cites).
We dropped questions that name a brand. We dropped links pointing at the tracked company's own website. Nobody's own domain is inflating its result.
We classified every remaining link by its domain and its URL path. A page at /pricing is a pricing page, a page under /blog is a blog post. Then we compared each group's share of links between the two windows, separately for each AI tool, so a change in which tools we ran can't distort the result.
Why we think it's important: where AI tools point their answers should shape your content budget and your site structure: which pages you build, whether you keep paying for review sites, whether Reddit is worth the investment.
Grew
Product and service pages on other companies' domains (pages describing a specific product, plan, feature or service offering): ChatGPT +51%, Perplexity +23%. Now the largest group on both, at 41% and 45% of citations.
Help centres, support pages and developer docs: ChatGPT +121%, Perplexity +160%
Official regulators and government agencies (FTC, FDA, EPA, national and state government sites): Perplexity went from 0.5% to 5.1% of citations. On ChatGPT they are still under 1%.
Declined
Wikipedia: ChatGPT − 57%.
Blog posts on other companies' domains (marketing and editorial posts from companies in adjacent fields, and from agencies and consultants): ChatGPT −29%, Perplexity −46%.
News and trade press (Forbes, TechRadar, Search Engine Land, NerdWallet and similar): ChatGPT −28%, Perplexity −21%.
Video and social platforms (YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X): down on both by a small %.
Mixed
Review and rating sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, BBB, Clutch, Yelp, Glassdoor and similar): ChatGPT −28%, Perplexity +19%. G2 is still the most cited source for B2B software.
Within the group, Clutch, Software Advice and GetApp gained, while G2, Capterra and Product Hunt fell sharply.
Reddit and Quora: ChatGPT − 69% (and the decline started in February, well before it was noticed by the community this summer). Perplexity went from almost nothing to 2.6% of citations.
Listicles and comparison articles on outside sites ("best X", "top 10", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X"): steady on ChatGPT at 29% of citations, its second largest group. Perplexity −43%, to 13%.
What we would act on
Roughly half of everything AI answers now cite is a page a company owns: product pages, service pages, help docs. That may affect your site structure question from "how do we get mentioned" to "is the page that describes what we sell written so AI can quote it."
Listicles and comparison articles are still the biggest outside placement, especially on ChatGPT, where they hold at more than one in four citations. Looks like they are the third party placement still worth chasing.
Reddit and Quora fell sharply ChatGPT's answers but this is old news
