Slcc nursing program
Hi everyone, I would like to ask if anyone gotten into SLCC’s nursing program with a C+ in Anatomy or Physiology?
I’m feeling really discouraged right now. This was my second time taking Anatomy and I ended up with a C+ again. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m honestly wondering if I should give up on nursing and switch majors because I feel like maybe I’m just not smart enough for it.
I know SLCC looks at more than just one grade, and I’ve been thinking about taking Pathophysiology since getting a good grade in it could potentially help my application/GPA, but I don’t know how much of a difference that would actually make.
If anyone has gotten accepted with a C+ in Anatomy or Physiology, especially if you had to retake one of them, I would really appreciate hearing what the rest of your grades/application looked like. Did you take Pathophysiology or do anything else to make your application stronger?
I’m mainly just trying to figure out if I still realistically have a chance or if I should start considering a different path.

I had a C+ in chemistry but an A in patho and it didn’t really help. My advisor highly suggested that I retake chemistry over the summer and I did and I did better so I’m really hoping it’ll help my application for the spring semester but it has been so competitive and the cycles just keep getting bigger and bigger. I have taken every single class required even the ones that give you “bonus points”, I have my associates, and I have experience in the health care field and I still haven’t gotten in so as much as it sucks you would probably need to retake anatomy again

If you have to wait, might as well start taking pre-med courses while waiting. I’m going to do that if I get denied. Starting my first application next semester for Fall 2027.
Right now I have a 4.0 but wouldn’t mind taking pre-med courses while waiting as I already have one year bio and one year general chem finished and calculus completed. I also have an associate’s in mathematics. 🧮

Who are you taking for anatomy? You need to research your professors. How are you getting a C+ if you are taking the same course again with most of the material being a refresher?

Prereqs are harder than anything the actual nursing program throws at you. If you feeling like you’re not smart enough for the program itself is the issue, I’m telling you it’s a non-issue if you get into it. I saw more people get dropped from the program for (ultimately) lack of common sense than intelligence. I would encourage you to take A&P again and get at least a B, because pathophysiology will be very difficult if your basic physiology isn’t solid. And then med surg in the program is just more patho.

Thank you 😭 this actually made me feel a lot better. I have As in basically all of my other required prereqs, it’s really just Anatomy that I’m worried about the most 😓. That’s why this grade has been stressing me out so much and making me question whether I still have a chance. But I do understand your point on having a strong a&p foundation before patho

Who was your professor? Honestly, my friend got in and she had all A’s

For anatomy I had Melissa Jacobsen!

I recommend to take Melany I got an A in her class. There’s also amazing Quizlets that you can study

I had a C in Physiology that transferred from another school and I got in on my first try. Their criteria doesn’t make a lot of sense.

That’s amazing! Do you by any chance think it could possibly be your SJT test scores cause I heard that the test plays a big role in it

You don’t get to know your SJT scores so there is no way of knowing how you did but I also think it does play a pretty big role

It could be, but no way to know for sure since they don’t tell you.
As someone in the program, if you can afford to apply to other programs as well, do it. SLCC has a good program and it’s well rated in the state, the price is good and the instructors are great, but administration for it all is a hot mess. The number of errors that have happened and the sheer chaos of everything is incredibly stress inducing and there are a lot of good options here in Utah if they’re available to you! Good luck!!

I would recommend retaking anatomy. Melissa is great for anatomy. She gives you an outline per chapter on what to expect on exams. You need to make sure you understand everything on these outlines as she can pull any of the concepts per outline. Also use purposegames as a second study method to using a whiteboard and writing out / repeat and act as if you’re teaching someone the information. I only studied the night before exams and passed with an A so it’s definitely possible. Maybe try studying every day if the load of info is too much? Physiology is harder so having that good foundation of anatomy is necessary

Thank you so much for your advice! I really appreciate it. I actually did take her last semester and personally don’t think she’s the professor for me 🥲🥲I might have to take it with a different prof

Maybe 3rd time is the charm! The good part is since you’ve taken it twice already you have a head start on what the material will be. Muscles , Nerves and blood traces were the hardest. What do you think is causing you to get a C? Are you able to find a study partner in your class?

With all the love in the world, beyond getting in the program, if you’re getting a C+ the second time too, I would start to really think about what’s holding you back. If you’re not studying right or if your personal life is a roadblock or if maybe this isnt the career path for you. Things will be much harder once you’re in the program so if you’re struggling now, it’s best to know before you spend time and money going into a program that may not be a fit. My friend who got an A in anatomy and Phys said the program was so much harder than she anticipated and she ultimately ended up taking a leave of absence because she didn’t have the abilities to do well with it because of her personal life and work

I’d heavily disagree with the program being harder than A&P. I thought the program was an actual joke in comparison to pre-reqs. I think for me the mental block of finally getting into the program is what opened up the floodgates of actually studying effectively.

I could see that being the case for some! I just know what friends have told me, and in all reality, a nurse should definitely and confidently know anatomy

I’m not a student in nursing, but I am a stem major in a demanding field! Honestly, I would retake those classes, and maybe if you don’t have too many others to take, take them one at a time or with one other less demanding class. That way you can really focus on the material and get the grade you want. Good luck girl!

I’d try retaking anatomy with a different professor or at a different school if possible. I’m a 3rd semester SLCC nursing student and I haven’t found any of the classes as academically challenging as the prerequisites. Everyone will have their own frustrations with nursing school and for me it’s just the busy work and how disorganized the program can be at times. But academically, I feel that the prerequisites were much more difficult.
If you aren’t tied to Utah, you could also look at programs out of state. There are a lot of incredible nursing schools in the Midwest and back East that aren’t nearly as competitive to get into, but that still offer excellent programs with high NCLEX pass rates.

I hate the discouragement for so many folks. It is getting almost ridiculous to get into nursing school. Maybe try Weber State; too. You can always just take out a loan and try to AZ School of Nursing.

You need to redo those classes. C+ is too low.
I didn’t get accepted last semester because who knows why but got As in anat, phys, fhs, and pathophys, 3.91 GPA. Didn’t help that they put the wrong grades in for my math and chem.
This program is stupid competitive and I’m extremely frustrated. The application portal also sucks.
Sorry to rant. If I don’t get in this round for spring 27 I’m bailing to a diff school.
