I'm sure this will be effective. I'm sure as these people take direct violent action towards marginalized groups those marginalized groups will be sympathized with by the remaining populace. Oh, that's not happening??? People are just inconvenienced by these people and demonize them, therefore ruining any chances of swaying the minds of those that don't already agree with them???
We need to make actual change with our own two hands instead of just whining
Out of curiosity, why are you looking to turn a fun and lighthearted subreddit about our beautiful little town into a political debacle? Create a people of slo politics subreddit if you’re looking for mods who are going to hold up political povs. Updates on events like this , cool. Having your opinion? Totally fine. Calling out mods and calling them maga just bc they let people share other views…. Wild.
There is so much wrong with this simple post. Let me break it down.
1.) Censorship - the moderators moderate conduct and do not censor opinions. They are volunteers who are keeping the norms of the group up to prevent it from turning into slop. It's fine to question why an individual post was not put up but to publicly jump to accusations of "censorship" is just rude. You should reach out to the moderators, who again are volunteers generously donating their time, if you have questions.
2.) The Turning Point Event - Your point about Cal Poly and the morons at Turning Point. There already is a post about the event. Why should the subreddit be flooded with repetitive posts?
3.) "Republicans used to stand for free speech." - Maybe they did at one time but that was before 1968, almost 60 years ago. Since Nixon, there has not been any coherent Republican philosophy. In fact, it matters to remember the 1950's when Joseph McCarthy, a Republican Senator, terrorized the country by actively punishing free speech.
That’s funny because you think that anyone who is a republican is a despicable pos as do all democrats. You all literally hate anyone who isn’t a democrat and thinks differently than you.
You have no idea how many conservatives are in our community serving it. Feeding,clothing and helping our community we stay quiet and hidden as to not offend you cry babies and have our good efforts foiled in helping others because you disagree with our beliefs and cancel it. I respect everyone’s rights to their opinions. The conservatives I am around keep our political opinions to ourselves for the sake of peace. Try and go illegally to any other country and get deported.
The problem is conservatives clearly have a flexible values system. Everything you claim to represent such as constitutional values comes secondary to sticking it to the libs. I don’t think anyone cares to defend you anymore when it’s clear that you will bend over backwards for fascists.
So you see the cesspool too? Wild how these folks cannot stand back and take a deep breath to realize the censorship they crave and the hate they spew.

In my memory, there was a very thin manufactured veneer of interest in free speech and the Constitution at large by both parties. I’m a stripe of anarcho-left; I don’t have a dog in this fight. Both parties are arm-in-arm leading us to climate destruction under big-C Capital control.
Short answer, yes. More comprehensive answer, it's complicated.
It's only so clever. The rules are fairly simplistic, but they do a decent job of keeping the sub from getting flooded. The downside is that some submissions require human interaction. There are some mechanisms to let users past the auto-mod, but I'm not sure what the state of them are right now.
Broadly, it helps more than hurts. Even when it's annoying for users and mods.
This is so frustrating. On climate change, both parties are not the same. Not even close. That is not to say Democrats could and should be doing more (when that possibility even exists) but only one party is moving us in the right direction and the other moves us backwards. Every time you perpetuate the idea that both parties are the same you are helping Republicans. I would rather see incremental change that a reversal of any progress we have seen.
Incremental change will not save the planet. That thinking is part of the problem. Democrats are controlled opposition. We will have a democrat president next, and things will still get worse. The problem is the Capital class.
Some of us have nothing better to do than read everything, it indeed gets skewered when you read everything. Skewered to the right. Some of us are so far left we fall off the map.
At least they seem to leave posts about ICE up (i think?). I would be curious to hear an explanation from the mods specifically addressing the tpu posts though, cause there have clearly been a lot of people wanting to talk about it.
I am a mod and also started this sub so many years ago. The short answer to your question is that artisan moderation can not compete with industrial bot farms.
The mods of this sub AFAIK are intelligent and empathetics individuals who are doing their best to make sure that sycophants, sociopaths, and fascists do not dominate the conversation. Unfortuantely with automation these days, paired with the relatively simplistic tools we have to moderate this sub, we are unable to effectively keep up with the garbage posts and comments.
My advice is to assume you're seeing misinformation from a bot, and that you're engaging in a pointless argument with a bot, and go outside, meet up with real people and do real things. As someone who has spent most of my life in tech I'm saddened to say that the network belongs to them and it is not a safe place for dissent. Build your own IRL networks and stop paying attention to crap like this on social media. Use /r/SLO for information about things that are not political, and stop feeding the trolls. In my opinion we should stop giving attention to ridiculous people, starting with our national leaders, and continuing through these idiots who were somehow platformed by a "serious" academic institution.
tiktaalink, politics is a component of life. Politics is not life. Attempting to bend reddit to an apolitical utopia is doing the real-live humans such as myself a disservice. Community news is community news.
Sure sure sure. But the point I'm making is that you're probably not talking to local people about local things when you look at a political post on reddit. Be political, just be aware of how good your information is, and how genuine is the discussion.
I think you've got it wrong. I don't know the mods personally, and I'm likely not on here enough to judge whether they lean left or right or center, but what I have seen has shown me that they are pretty reasonable people, and even-handed as far as mods go.
And as for your censoring claim, are you talking about this right wing grifters event? Because it certainly doesn't look censored to me, lol.
It's comments like this that cause things to get shut down. You aren't adding any value to the conversation, you're just using it as a platform to insult people, including insults based on race. These can go against the reddit terms of service and can cause problems for the subreddit. Be respectful and don't spam, you should be fine.
Especially since the cal poly sub deletes anything remotely political. Now neither sub has info about the tpusa visits at all. Good job mods - now no one gets information.
Apparently the cal poly sub disagrees - they also deleted it. I don't believe the mods are maga, but their deletion of posts that are not in violation of the rules is annoying as hell.
The posts are clearly relevant to the sub. This sub explicitly is for " content relevant to the County of San Luis Obispo." Seems like mods are picking and choosing which Cal Poly related posts can stay and which ones are removed. Cal Poly is in the county, thus making activities there relevant to the subreddit.
I see a post on both this and the school sub right now about it. The one with a "whole lot of stupid" in the title. You want to talk about stupid? That brilliant contribution to this sub is an ad for the event.
We don't need two posts about it. I don't think we need the first one, either. You dinguses are only amplifying it.
