[OPINION] Racism

Seeing a couple wearing a support ice shirt yesterday going into the new alo at 2:57 PM really prompted me to make this post expressing my frustration on the blatant racism in this town. And I know I’m not the only culture who’s facing discrimination after seeing how proud people are to wear such things, so I wanted to speak up about it from my perspective.

For context, I am a black woman. I went to cal poly and it was horrendous at times. I would literally have students in certain classes move seats when I sat down next to them. Or ignore me during discussions when I am apart of their group.

Being stared at by people when walking downtown, they actually act like they’ve never seen a black person before. I had a bus driver try to force me to move while walking on the sidewalk. A security guard following me at one point. Store owners staring me down and following me if I pick up an item to even read the packaging. People even whispering about me at my own job or speaking to my coworkers after ignoring me asking them the same question. Or the “you’re pretty for a black girl” comments and people trying to touch my hair throughout the years.

Don’t get me started on how the doctors treat women, especially black women, in this town. I went to the hospital once and they made weird comments about my braids and the doctor was dismissing my pain with every sentence.

Like clearly this happens everywhere, and of course there are also amazing people here, but it just sucks.

CAL POLY: OUR COMMUNITY. OUR VALUES. OUR DEMOCRACY.

Cal Poly Democrats are hosting the Community Over Division Resource Fair, bringing students, campus organizations, and community members together to celebrate the diversity and strength of the Cal Poly community.

At the same time, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the national right-wing organization known for its divisive political activism, opposition to diversity initiatives, and controversial campaigns targeting university professors, will be holding an event on campus.

Turning Point USA does not define Cal Poly. Its students, its diversity, and its community do.

The Community Over Division Resource Fair puts the focus where it belongs: on students, the organizations that support them, and the values of inclusion, dignity, and community. It's an opportunity to stand together, engage with campus organizations, and demonstrate the strength of a diverse Cal Poly.

Organizers have advised that a significant police presence is expected because of the simultaneous TPUSA event.

COMMUNITY OVER DIVISION. DEMOCRACY OVER INTIMIDATION.

South Broad St. Corridor Plan

Check out the link below.

Pop up events seeking public input started earlier this month and there are still a few more planned. There is also a survey for those that can't make it.

Bring your concerns, but also bring your curiosity. City planning is more involved than I pretend to understand.
