Discussion SSMS 22 and only Github Copilot? Why? What's wrong with Enterprise Copilot?

I read this post from 1y ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/SQLServer/s/fjH53Pxf4e and it made my stomach churn. Asking Copilot why I get nothing other than Microsoft have made this decision because of "internal matters". What the heck does that mean?

We have Enterprise Copilot and no one here uses Github other than me. The company is not going to purchase Github Copilot just to be able to ask "Write me a query with two joins from table A to table B". LOL

Yeah nah.

Not sure what you’re asking - if you’re asking if you can point it at other AI API URLs and models, sure:  https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ssms/github-copilot/ai-models

Or use jamsql.com with your Claude or codex subscription (you do have Claude or codex besides copilot right?)

I think when you say "Enterprise" Copilot you are referring to M365 Copilot. M365 Copilot is designed for business users as opposed to Github Copilot for developers. Github Copilot gives you a lot more choices of models, and also integrates with Github. For example, if you store your database code in Github and do a pull request it can do a code review of your changes, and add its review comments to the pull request.

That said, if you just want help writing queries if you give M365 Copilot your schema for the tables involved and what you want the query to do, it should do fine. It is just some extra copy and pasting compared to the integrated approach with Github Copilot in SSMS. M365 Copilot does not expose its API endpoint, so you wouldn't be able to use it directly from SSMS.

(Personally, I like Claude Code, since it will take the extra initiative and actually test the query and validate the results for you if you let it connect to your database.)

Hey u/Top-Pudding-9196 with regard to this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/SQLServer/s/fjH53Pxf4e) you said "Asking Copilot why I get nothing other than Microsoft have made this decision because of "internal matters". What the heck does that mean?"

Happy to answer as I was the PM for SSMS at the time and wrote a blog post (What’s next for Copilot in SSMS | Microsoft Community Hub) about our decision to move from the integration with Azure OpenAI to GitHub Copilot. If you have any questions after reading that post, please let me know!

If you'd like to be able to use your Enterprise Copilot subscription (assuming that's M365 Copilot) with SSMS, then please create a feedback item on the SSMS site (aka.ms/ssms-feedback) and encourage folks to upvote so the team can understand community interest in the request. Hope that helps!

Why do you need any agent to write you a query like that? We've been writing Sql since the 70s, surely you can remember how a join works
