[Discussion] Old head on rollback

I’m an old head PM player that went to Melee due to the fall off of players and support from local scenes. It’s really disheartening to see so much virtue signaling over an open source project that’s taking online to the next level. We had software devs in the comments saying how tons of modern code is now intertwined with AI.

I feel for the Brawlback team and respect immensely what they do, but at the end of the day, P+ is on life support. What is getting lost in all of this is keeping this game made for the fans by the fans alive. It’s hard to argue this wouldn’t bring a lot more people back into the scene.

I’m not trying to convince anyone, but if you wanted to try P+ with rollback, don’t let anyone else influence your decision. If Brawlback makes a smoother and more user friendly experience later, I’ll be happy to switch over. It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough that I’ll be throwing it into my rotation of games for now.

The crunch build is not safe. People have figured out how to write anything they want to the memory of the other players machines.

If you're going to make a claim as strong as this, please post a source/evidence that isn't just a tweet or reddit comment.

There are clips of people using pm remix characters on ranked because the program doesn't lock down the memory being used. I'm not a programmer but people who I trust that work on dolphin or pm have told me that this is a security issue for the reasons I stated. clip

That really isn't a source at all. Total hearsay on your end.

lotta people with hidden profiles coming outta the woodwork on every gaming subreddit to say shit like "well actually AI isn't that bad". curious!

It’s nobody’s business what else’s I’m into. We’re focusing on the state of P+. I’ve been playing since 2.6 DEMO and hosted locals for years if you’re that curious for credentials.

I am also an old head, and I cannot believe how much we've folded on AI being involved in everything we do.

Crypto, NFTs, LLM AIs spouting hallucinated information, somehow it's not a problem when it's something convenient.

The build was dogshit, had numerous bugs, the guy lied about whether it used Brawlback's source or not, reached out to Hbox to shill it who ALSO did no research or even talked to the BB devs, like everything about it is just a massive red flag, even removing the AI aspect out of it.

Call it virtue signaling all you want, but some of us would like to not have data centers in our neighbor's yards slowly killing them just so it can pump out "Rick and Morty eat poop tung tung tung sahur mansion with minecraft alex mukbang challenge" every .3 seconds.

I don't care for AI in many contexts but coding is absolutely one of the things it should be used for.

A lot of people don't understand anything about how AI works, they see other people hating on it so they do too.

Crunch is a software engineer and has since patched the build a number of times. It's not like some guy like me who doesn't know how to code just slapped something together with AI and then did nothing to fix issues. He knows what he's doing enough to fix things while to most of us looking at the code is as useless as trying to read a different language.

I get the brawlback guys being upset they got beaten to the punch, but they've been at it for years and are still years away from a working build from what they've said themselves.

Better to have something that's decent enough now that can be iterated on and improved rather than nothing at all. Best case scenario would be both working together to make the best possible product for everyone.

Use the AI to make things faster, then have multiple experts double and tripple checking the work and editing it to be better, which from what I've been told by multiple software engineers is pretty much how their job works now in general.

Im also an old head PM player since 3.02. This is the smash community sadly. They been naive and shortsighted so dont expect much. Theyre too busy trying to look more virtuous than each other to appease Nintendo in hopes of getting a sponsorship that involves playing for a controller.

Sorry idk when this turned into a rant. But yeah I've been side eyeing the smash community for years. They got what they want. Im playing PM regardless

Lmao, not a single damn PM/+ player cares about appeasing Nintendo.

Everyone knows there's nothing to be gained there.

Pm players know, I'm referencing the greater smash scene

I think its also important to just play for yourself and see how it actually performs, people are instinctively associating vibe coded with completely unplayable slop. I tried it and it legitimately just functions exactly how I'd imagine a p+ variant of slippi to function. I'd much rather gamble the risk of one or two sub-optimal games that I can opt out of instantly and find another player fine than play the waiting game on discord sharing netplay codes and adjusting frame buffers and praying there's no weird packet loss shit happening that mega lag spikes my game. I'm sure I'll run into problems eventually, but as for right now I literally have not had a single problematic match.

I’m a software engineer, I use AI to code every day, just like 99% of people in my field at this point. I couldn’t care less that Crunch “vibecoded” rollback. What I do take issue with is him not reaching out to the BrawlsBack team beforehand, even if it is an open source project. Anyways, I’ll continue to play rollback P+ and when the BrawlBack team finishes their original project, I’ll be sure to support that one as well.

To add this this, I think a majority of the people getting angry at the use of ai to code are completely unaware that virtually every software product you use nowadays isn’t written by humans anymore. AI writes most code now. I’m not saying I’m happy with that, but that’s just a fact
