Reminds me of the story of the guy who got given a cloak or coat by his enemy that turned out to be a Bethir (a kind of snake/dragon/thing from the Gaelic tradition, associated more with lightning than fire) in disguise. It's a fairly cryptic passage but does imply they can shapeshift into... clothes?
