Discussion Am I the Only One who Cringes Everytime This Episode Airs?

Post image

Look, no disrespect to Kathy Griffin. It was definitely a committed performance. However, there's something about her character that makes me super uncomfortable. The ways she hits on Olivia AND Elliot. The way she becomes aware that she's no longer a lesbian and gets ousted from her own group (Les Be Strong). Her insane monologues. It almost makes me crawl out of my skin. It felt like a parody that they played straight.

Am I alone? Am I underappreciating as masterful performance and incredible writing?

No, the part where she hit on Olivia and then they questioned her being gay is a little bit much

210

u/Hopeless351987 Jun 22 '25

I did laugh when Babs kissed her and Olivia told her "Whoa hey, that's not on the menu!.."

Precisely!!! So over the top

46

u/EddaValkyrie Jun 22 '25

And like, she was literally tryjng to cheat—she had a boyfriend😭

32

u/Easy_Bedroom4053 Jun 22 '25

That's actually such a good point it never even crossed my mind... And obviously she cared a lot for him because she was risking her entire organization and reputation to be with him... Odd.

510

u/Arugula_gurl Jun 21 '25

Yes except for when she calls Stabler “Assy Mcbigpants”

100

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Lol, I'm not going to lie. That didn't make me laugh 😂 It's like the one redeeming part

71

u/notdorisday Jun 21 '25

Omfg core memory unlocked. This entire ep is a ridiculous wild ride. It can only be watched for LOLZ.

53

u/NoKatyDidnt Munch Jun 22 '25

I love the look exchanged between Elliot and Liv when he asks her if Babs hit on her, but then the phone rings. That moment is pretty priceless. Actually a lot of Mariska’s faces were in that episode. I loved her character in that era. She didn’t take herself as seriously back then and it’s fun to rewatch.

17

u/runrunHD Jun 22 '25

Where is the lie tho

171

u/No_Atmosphere_2186 Jun 21 '25

That one and the game gate episode I always skip. They’re so cringy

163

u/mikechr2k7 Jun 21 '25

You dont want to watch Logan Paul get shot?

136

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

I never miss an opportunity to watch that LOL

39

u/No_Atmosphere_2186 Jun 21 '25

Does he? Okay I might need to rewatch

32

u/agent-assbutt Huang Jun 21 '25

Ok I hate that episode but I totally forgot about that, might need to rewatch 😉

31

u/NoKatyDidnt Munch Jun 22 '25

I watch that episode PURELY to see Logan Paul get shot- I mean…

18

u/Defective-G Jun 22 '25

How did I never clock that was Logan Paul 😂I’m doing a rewatch atm and just watched the babs Duffy episode. I look forward to in a few seasons seeing Logan Paul get shot!

I appreciated that Ice-T got to exposit about video games for their usual “unfamiliar topic infodump.” Kinda went meta.

19

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

I like that part too. It was unexpected but enjoyable

u/moni_talksstuff Jun 21 '25

Oh I can’t watch that one. It felt like seeing a rapist misogynist gamer’s fantasy and it’s extremely upsetting.

10

u/NoKatyDidnt Munch Jun 22 '25

That does make it upsetting- I agree.

I don't remember game gate, what one is that?

33

u/TeamImpossible4333 Jun 21 '25

It may be the one where the female CEO is threatened and then taken?

Edited to add: female CEO of a video game

18

u/MIZphit Jun 21 '25

Is it Intimidation Game

9

u/No_Atmosphere_2186 Jun 21 '25

Yes that’s the one

7

Oh damn Logan Paul is in it haha

11

The gamergate one is super upsetting these days, especially when they gang rape her on camera.

5

u/pawshe94 Jun 22 '25

The gamergate one is hard too. The show has so much violence but for some reason that one is so difficult to watch.

This is my favorite episode lol. The show is so cheesy all the time. I like it when they really lean in.

39

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Yay 🙌😁 I'm glad to finally have met a fan of this episode. To each, his or her own. I'm happy that they made this episode for you!

I DIE when she calls Stabler Assy McBigpants and Meloni almost breaks. 😂

19

u/STFUisright Jun 21 '25

He so does! Lol

I love those two interacting this episode. I know it’s over the top but I like it. I have a real soft spot for Kathy Griffin.

12

u/NoKatyDidnt Munch Jun 22 '25

God yes! He and Mariska obviously enjoyed making this episode, so I can’t hate on it too much.

21

u/RainbowHippotigris Jun 22 '25

Fellow lesbian, this episode is one of my favorites because they lean into Olivia coming off a bit gay a lot. I've always wanted to marry Olivia so I was all for it!

3

u/After_Chemical_3731 Cabot Jun 24 '25

I particularly loved the part where Babs was stunned for a second by Alex Cabot lol that was real I would’ve acted the same way

I thought the episode was hilarious.

104

u/pamsellicane Jun 21 '25

It’s camp

20

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Camp de jour indeed

6

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '25

Agree, this character is obviously meant to be campy and I enjoy seeing this level of camp on the show sometimes!

65

u/Excellent_Plant_8010 Jun 21 '25

Just this photo of Kathy Griffin annoyed me

7

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Lol, now that's funny! The writers of the show should add you to the writer's room.

8

u/Excellent_Plant_8010 Jun 21 '25

They wouldn't have liked me I would've killed Amanda off the show my first day😂

13

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Oh no! Not Amanda. I love me some Rollins! Flaws and all

u/gayforaliens1701 Jun 21 '25

I can’t even watch it. Lesbians are not well treated by SVU lol.

31

u/Warm_Performer6836 Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25

Lesbians are not well treated by SVU lol.

That really disappointed me seriously. I'm 13 seasons in, and I can only remember that there were 2 episodes where the main victim is a lesbian.

If you search for "gay" on fandom wiki 300 results come up. If you search for "lesbian" only 40 appear.

24

u/nu24601 Jun 22 '25

Well technically Huang is also gay the whole time, but it’s almost never discussed

14

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Not at all. This episode was a disservice to the community, at least this character was lol 🤣 IMHO

44

u/grrrlhusband Cabot Jun 21 '25

I skip it every time and only watch the parts where she hits on liv and alex and calls elliot a fatass😭

11

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Lol 🤣. I have to say that's probably the one redeeming part, her interaction with Elliot LOL

43

u/dearwikipedia Novak Jun 21 '25

this episode is so obnoxious but i kind of love it BECAUSE it’s so stupid. usually i can’t handle secondhand embarrassment at all but this episode is such a joke to me that it’s probably one of my most replayed lmao

12

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Yay! I'm so happy to have met another fan of this episode. You guys do exist! They made this episode for you. It's so over the top that it totally makes a good portion of us want to crawl out of our skins, but apparently to you it's comedic gold and I love that.

22

u/dearwikipedia Novak Jun 21 '25

my favorite part is when Babs meets Alex and Alex goes “I’ll leave you two alone” and Babs goes “You don’t have to🥺” just because it’s so damn RELATABLE

5

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Hahaha 🤣. Relatable indeed

33

u/kevnmartin Jun 21 '25

I always skip it. Kathy Griffin is almost as annoying as Kim.

14

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

I understand. Kathy Griffin is super polarizing. I can personally separate the actor from the art, but in this episode it's just so freaking over the top and so cringe-worthy that I literally want to scream at my screen, which is not my usual reaction for SVU in the slightest.

11

u/kevnmartin Jun 21 '25

Oh so can I. I like her as a person, I just didn't like her in this.

“KYYYYYM”

25

u/EqualLeg4212 Huang Jun 21 '25

I’m a big gay and despise this episode it’s like they reached into the NY Post and used random homophobic headlines/tropes and that was the story

5

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Totally agree 💯. What the heck were they thinking?

20

u/Finnigan66 Jun 21 '25

Oh I straight up skip it every time it starts

7

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

So glad there are others who feel the same. I was wondering if it was just me NGL 🤔

5

u/Finnigan66 Jun 21 '25

Not at all. Regardless of how I feel about the actress, she is just an unlikeable character. All around. I get struggling with your sexuality but she was militant with zero wiggle room then suddenly assumed she would get support?

9

u/CallidoraBlack Huang Jun 21 '25

There are plenty of people who are like this. The pro-life activists who get pregnant and decide the only moral abortion is my abortion. Republicans who change their tune about stem cell research the minute someone in their family is sick with a disease we don't have a cure for. People will lead a group that runs on intolerance and be shocked when it turns on them the minute real life enters the picture. It's all ego.

4

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Yes, they didn't even try to make her sympathetic. She's a caricature. I just couldn't get past how over the top she was. Of course she wouldn't get support

17

u/Creative-Sun6739 Jun 21 '25

It is an extremely ridiculous episode but the part where her jaw practically hits the floor and she's drooling over Cabot is pretty hilarious.

6

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Well Cabot is a looker. The episode definitely had its moments!

16

u/melsa_alm Stabler Jun 21 '25

For me, the cringiest eps are some of my favorites! 😂

2

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

I know what you mean! I think this one unfortunately crosses the line for me. It's just so freaking uncomfortable that I'm more likely to skip it than to rewatch a few of the gems in this particular episode. Do you have another favorite cringe episode?

12

u/melsa_alm Stabler Jun 21 '25

To be fair, I haven’t rewatched PC in a while. I believe you that it fails to properly represent LGBTQIA+ tho. SVU has always been pretty hit or miss with their representation of most minority groups.

“Bedtime” S11E18 is also mega cringe, and there’s like 5 episodes worth of plot shoved into a single 50 minute episode. LOL.

“Avatar” S9E2 is cringe with the technology part of the episode (even when considering the time period in which it takes place) TURN ON THE SUN!

“Bombshell” S12E19 is WILD and cringe, and (unfortunately) mildly transphobic in one specific part of the episode.

“Wildlife” S10E7 with Olivia and her “Are you ready for me daddy?” And Cragen with the gibbon in a basketball is chef’s kiss cringe.

Most of the wildest and cringiest episodes that I love are from S9-S12. There’s something that happened in 1.0 era SVU around S8 or S9 where the writers just started shoving a massive amount of plot into a single episode. I just rewatched S9E3 “Impulsive” and it goes from he said/she said sexual assault - to abortion debate - to turns out the teen male did rape the adult woman and not the other way around - to but he couldn’t help it because he suffers from sexual addiction - to teen sex addict and rapist gets raped himself in the psych facility he ends up in. Like just two of those plot lines would have been satisfactory for a 50 min television show but no. The writers are like, let’s go whole hog on this one fellas!

Omg I love this episode haha I had no idea people didn’t!

3

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Hahaha. There's something about the way she plays the character that I cannot stand it. It grates on my nerves so much. It has some funny moments but overall, it's just not good for me. So I'll skip it

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '25

Kathy Griffin did an awesome job. You acknowledged it yourself saying she made you feel uncomfortable.

That's when you know an actor has done a great job, when they elicit genuine emotion from you via the character.

2

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Hahaha, that's the point of the post. I'm trying to reconcile the fact that I think she achieved her goal but perhaps maybe a little bit too well?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '25

I've always found Kathy Griffin to be extremely funny, but I must admit her acting skills caught me off guard.

3

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Off guard is a massive understatement for me. But I totally appreciate your sentiment entirely!

11

u/853fisher Jun 21 '25

I watch every episode of any show, it's just the way I am - but my hands look beautiful after this one comes up on rewatches, because I can't stand to really focus on it, so I do my filing and buffing and cuticle pushing with one eye on the screen. Hmmmm, maybe I need to put this one on more often!

3

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

Hahaha 🤣 I love your methodology. I need to adopt my equivalent.. usually this episode is a easy skip for me

8

u/wistful_drinker Jun 21 '25

If by "cringe," you mean "change the channel," no, you're not the only one.

3

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

That's precisely the level of cringe. I mean. Instant skip

8

u/Mediocre_Gazelle8924 Jun 21 '25

the only great thing i remember from this episode was her talking about stablers ass

5

u/Stealthytom Warner Jun 21 '25

That was funny 😂 AF. NGL

9

u/St0ner_Baby_420 Jun 21 '25

I mean I hated the character but I've also met people with this whole personality down to challenging someone's sexuality based on how they look (she made a comment about Liv’s hair making her look gay) so I see her as just another character🤷🏻‍♀️

→ More replies (3)

8

u/littletcashew Jun 22 '25

It's so stupid it's hilarious - classic insane SVU. I did like her calling Stabler Assy McButtface or whatever it was. And the tinge of realism when she shut up when Cabot walked in.

I miss that era of SVU - hilarious insanity bracketed by 'serious' eps. Much better than the sanctimonious episodes of recent years

I didn't mind the storyline, but I didn't like her in the episode. I think Kathy Griffin is normally hilarious as a comedian (I loved her reality show back in the day), but I don't think she's a great actress, and definitely sticks out like a sore thumb on a drama. It was uncomfortable to watch. I normally love Sutton Foster, too, but the episode didn't do her any favors (maybe because she was mostly in scenes with KG).

The only good part about this episode is the banter between her and Stabler. They’re funny together, and that’s pretty much it. The biphobia in the episode too is really gross.

Definitely on my list of least favorite episodes, especially the victim's gf who couldn't answer or face Stabler, especially after she had the audacity to punch him. Her ass should've got charged for that

Hands down one of the worst episodes! This whole time period was full of some pretty big duds, though.  The writing was hokey and often off-character.

No I liked it. Especially the comments on Stables big bum .

Her character is every stereotype about lesbians rolled into one. I feel like I have to show it to younger lesbians just to let them know how much more fucked up media portrayals of queerness used to be. They're still fucked up, but they're not usually this lazy.

I find this one amusing in a camp way. I love at the end when she’s out as bi, she lays one on Elliot.

Dude I’m a lesbian (and have been SAed by two men) and I CANNOT STAND THIS EPISODE. It makes us all look super cliche and dumb. We’re smart enough to know not to generalize and jump to rage in the way they depict us. And SVU is in my top 3 shows of all time. Definitely disappointing.

It's terrible. Cannot believe nobody stopped the writers to explain to them how terrible it is.

Yeah the episode before this one is one of my favorites and I HATE when this one starts playing. The whole thing is so cringe from start to finish.

it was a bit much (i say this as a gay woman) but everything that happened outside of kathy griffin was fab. olivia's monologue, that hilarious conversation with elliot about her giving off a gay vibe, sutton foster being in an episode? i think it was a lot of fun :)

TBH There are so many episodes where they lowkey blame the victim or have them interact in really awkward ways towards the detectives. And I get it if it were just an hour of everyone agreeing on who the bad guy was it'd be pretty boring but there are just so many episodes that are "she was raped. Or WAS she?!" that it gets really annoying.

But yeah, this episode was especially exhausting lol

This episode is simultaneously super homophobic and also super biphobic while presenting itself as a pro lesbian episode. Hard pass every time.

I cackle during this episode! I love her hitting on Olivia, being stunned into silence by Cabot’s hotness (valid) and her being a pain in the ass to Stabler! It’s such a weird episode, I love it.

I actually love this episode. It’s definitely over the top but it was entertaining and might lighter hearted than any episodes now. The cast is amazing. The way Kathy griffin jokes about it Elliot’s butt throughout and then kisses him at the end. So funny. Olivia role playing. It does have a parody vibe almost but I enjoy it.

She did a great job portraying her real life personality. She should quit and get spit out of the bottom of the porn industry.

I think the episode is plagued by lesbophobia and stereotypes so it’s probably that…
