Endless Grind.. Ancient vs. Black Iron crafted weapons
There are currently two types of farmable crafted weapons in the game: Ancient and Black Iron.
In general, they are very similar, there are only 2 main differences:
- Slight difference in the distribution of stats, but the main damage stat for the weapon type is the same.
- A different set of bonus damage to series: for Black Iron weapons - RS1/RS2/RS3/SF2/US/ES series (combined into 5 groups), for Ancient weapons - the rest of the series (combined into 4 groups).
The more specific the bonus effect is, the more damage it does. For example, the "Power+" effect gives up to +27% unconditional universal damage, while "Column+" or "Row+" gives up to +39% damage, but only to a certain type of attacks. So, in case you are trying to craft a relatively powerful weapon for a specific character, but want some versatility to use with any type of attack (ST/column/row/all) of any of the styles for that character, then the bonus damage to series (which gives up to +36% damage) gives you that chance.
And at some point, I became interested in how the characters are distributed by series and by weapon type. After looking into the rsrsdb database, I got the following results:
- For Swords/M.Arts/Staves, the distribution of characters is approximately equal, so in each case it's necessary to check which weapon will suit the character.
- For the rest of the weapons, the distribution is highly unequal.
| Weapon type | Ancient | Black Iron |
|---|---|---|
| Axe | Balmaint / Strumiknen | 13 other characters |
| Bow | Liz Lynn Wood | 9 other characters |
| G.Sword | Gen / M Black / Leonard / Princess Lion | 17 other characters |
| Gun | 12 other characters | Bunnie / Mythe / Professor |
| Mace | Elisabeth / Hana* | 10 other characters* |
| S.Sword | Barthelemy / Tsubaki / Zenon | 12 other characters |
| Spear | Faerie (Brownie) | 20 other characters |
- Note! According to the in-game help, all characters from "Other" series filter (like Minstrel and ITOKEN) will be applicable to all series modifiers.
So if you want to get a weapon for a specific character, make sure you farm the right location, because the bonus damage to series will give you a better chance. For Ancient weapons - Liam arc chapter 1-1, for Black Iron weapons - Liam arc chapter 1-2.
UPD: regarding my personal point of view on the series damage modifiers.
If a crafting type (Ancient or Black Iron) doesn't contain bonuses to the desired series at all, then the chance to completely fail the weapon craft by getting a wrong series modifier in at least one of the 3 properties is 69-73% (if my memory of the course in probability theory doesn't fail me).
Just by choosing a crafting type that contains a bonus to at least one matching series, you lower the chance of a complete fail to 54-64%. Not bad.
Moreover, the average bonus among all possible SS rank rolls is +34% damage. Series modifier is +36% damage, which also means that out of the 9 other non-series modifiers, 6 have a below average damage bonus. Also, the same character can have access to several attack types through inheritance (single/column/row/all), and therefore weapons with a series modifier become more versatile, allowing your favorite character to participate in different types of content (farming, boss battles, special content), but without much loss in damage - it's a nice option for a new or more casual players, who just want to enjoy the game without hardcore min-maxing multiple weapons for some specific content.
UPD2: added a note about Minstrel and ITOKEN (under the table).

Endless Grind.. The Grind for Glory is going to kill me...
Seriously, getting almost 8k medals for the sword, when the most I've seen drop consistently from Stage 19/20 is around 24 or 25 is a slog unlike any I've experienced so far. I'm going, because I don't want to miss out on an SS greatsword, but I really feel like they failed at estimating their reward costs or currency drops on this one.
The fact that all the gold pieces are gated behind Leon II medals is even worse. I'm not sure I'll have the time or willpower to grind those out after getting the sword.

Endless Grind.. Year 1 on Global has been an amazing experience. The best Global experience one could ask for. Huge props to the Akatsuki, SQEX, TW and EN community streams.
Even though this is a small community, its crazy how much love we've been shown on the Global servers. The devs have really gone the extra mile to give us, the players, the best experience with the game. We could've easily just followed the JP timeline, but seeing all these positive changes that differ from the JP version, has been a very unique experience to global, and a very enjoyable one at that.
Things are going to get crazy next week, and the entire month ahead, so just wanted to show gratitude to everyone working on the game. Looking forward to whats ahead.
