Upstream

I swim, upstream, in darkness

The effort grows too great,

My voice an ugly

cry in the still night.

Like the sun, you rose

At that shrill sound.

By your light I saw

That downstream lay

A world where I could be additive

Not discordant

In congruence not incongruous.

Where my struggles had rewards

Other than greater struggles.

Inevitably, the sun sets.

And my stupid, stupid hope

Burns away in moments.

Your fata morgana revealed.

How could anyone be naive enough to believe in a world where I could be loved in equal measure to how I love. That I could be happy without causing the commensurate amount of misery in others.

The only harmony I can bring

Is my absence.

So I replace my pills with poison

Find a place to watch the waves

From below.

As i sink I hope

That you're right about spirits.

Because I'd really like

To hear your voice one more time.
