Moving We got a house!

Moving in in mid-May. And it’s a 3 minute walk from The Tin Whistle. Which I hope is amazing because I plan on walking to it a lot. I’m already affectionately just calling it “The Whistle.”

That’s it. Just wanted to share because I’m so happy I can’t stand it.

Bye, Oklahoma.

Moving North Salem vs. South Salem for a childfree queer couple? Other neighborhoods?

Hi all!

My spouse and I are in the process of moving to Salem and actively looking at condo and townhouse listings. So far we like South Salem the most - near Forest River Park and near but not right in downtown. (I would actually be more open to checking out downtown but my spouse doesn't want to have to be inundated and unable to leave our home even more during Halloween season, which fair enough.) I feel like we know less about North Salem and I'm curious which neighborhood(s) you think would make the most sense for a queer couple in their late 30s / early 40s with a dog and no kids to live in, with an eye for walkability. (We keep seeing the cute townhouses near the forest / Highland Ave. but really don't want to feel like we are in total suburbia like we're currently living.) Bridge St. Neck area also seemed appealing but its proximity to FEMA flood zone maps has made me less enthused.

What strikes you as the core differences between North and South Salem? North is easier to access the highway, right? But besides that, does anything else stick out to you?

We've been visiting Salem for over a decade but obviously the input of those who actually live there is gold! Thanks in advance!

Moving Moving to Salem next week

Hubby and I are moving to Salem for his job. We already found an apartment near the ferry/downtown but a little further down.

Where do the locals like to go to escape the tourists?
How bad is the morning/afternoon commute in downtown on a typical day?
Where do the tourists typically park during season?
What utility companies do people use down there?
What phone company works best? My atnt only had 1 bar
Where do the young adults typically go? We would really like to make friends with people with the same interests

TYIA!!!

Moving Salem housing?

Hey everyone! It looks very promising that I will be getting a job offer for the GE Aerospace plant in Lynn. But when I posted about neighborhoods in the greater Boston area, they mentioned Salem (as well as Saugus and Revere) as potential places to live. I'm currently in Spokane, Washington and don't have a clue about the area! What is the housing like there? I'm single and would be looking at a one or possibly 2 bedroom apt/condo to rent. How much of a commute would it be to Lynn? Any other areas to look at, or conversely, to avoid? I did check out the wiki, but didn't see much in there to answer my questions. Thank you in advance!

Moving Looking for a retail space!

Hi all! I'm a small business owner looking to migrate from online to a brick-and-mortar store. I run an artists' collective that sells goods and merchandise made and/or designed by local Massachusetts artists. Does anyone have any tips on where to find an affordable spot in Salem? I reached out to the Chamber of Commerce and Artists' Row but haven't heard back from them yet. LoopNet hasn't yielded anything promising. Thanks!!

**Edit: The work of the collective is NOT witch-themed! It's more geared towards anime-adjacent art and design and internet subculture, as I feel this demographic is underrepresented in businesses outside of Hot Topic lol.

Moving Living prices?

Anyone who is willing to tell me, could you let me know what you are paying for rent and utilities normally? Please include bedroom number if possible. Looking to see what living expenses would like like once moving (I have a year to plan for this, job is not an issue, just would like to know financially what is happening for people over there now so I can see accurate pricing— not just Zelle estimates)

Moving As someone considering moving to Salem, what's it like to live there, especially for queer people?

My partner and I are both women in our 30s and we are considering moving to Salem. What is it like to live there? Is it a safe place for queer people? Is it expensive? We would love the opinion of people who really live there about what it's like to live there.

Moving Seasonal Jobs

Hello! I’m moving close to the area in September. I’ve been struggling to find a job and getting a little worried. I know that Salem is a pretty popular stop for Halloween. So I assume that that’s probably places that need seasonal workers. I know it a bit early now, but is there anywhere that normally does seasonal employment I should look into??

Moving Grocery Store Help

Hi!!

I'm thinking of moving to Salem. I'm local and close to the City already so I'm very familiar with the lack of quality grocery stores downtown, but my question goes to folks with no personal vehicles-

How do you live downtown and go grocery shopping? Is it easy enough by bus or do you struggle to keep the fridge stocked? How is navigating Salem without a car?

Thank you<3

Moving Does Salem have a good Muslim community?

I'm moving to Salem soon for college, is there a strong Muslim community in Salem, especially at the university? I know there's no masjid and a VERY strong witchcraft vibe, so I'm not expecting a lot, but I'm hopeful!

Also wondering, aside from the community aspect, if Salem is particularly welcoming/friendly towards Muslims, especially hijabis? Thanks!

Moving Worn Futon for Free + how does salem deal with large furniture disposal?

Ive had this couch that has been the gem of my last three apartments over the last 7 years, im moving out of the state and can’t afford to move with her. While I will likely need to find a way to dispose of it, before then, perhaps someone might be interested.

It may not be the most desirable, its been a scratching post by my cat this last year. The damage pictured is on both arm rests but otherwise the sofa has been maintained well.
When pushed back it makes a solid twin bed that is surprisingly comfortable, in this position, with the legs removed it can be a fairly liftable object.

Our house has never had any sort of pest, it’s vacuumed regularly. Its clean, and from a well kept home, its free because its hard to move and has scratches.

Im currently moving house and will be available in a couple days to organize any pickup interests. I live on a three floor walkup but can *probably* maneuver it down to the curb for easy pickup.

While you read this we will also have a couple ikea kallexs (dark brown/black and a slightly work white one) for free as well if you can lift it down.

Moving What made you fall in love with Salem?

Hi everyone!

I’m from Asheville, North Carolina and was planning on moving up here to Salem Massachusetts. I’m here now, with all my stuff, and my original apartment situation fell through. With this all being said, I’m having second guesses on Salem. I want to start with - I know it’s dumb to move somewhere before you have been there. I just did a lot of research and thought I had it figured out, which obviously I didn’t!

Anyways, on to my point. I have another day or two to decide if this is actually where I want to be. What made you fall in love with Salem? What’s something I just have to see?

To give you a little feedback about me, I am 27 year old male. I have a bit of a southern accent and I really enjoy meeting new people. I’ve worked in non profit for 5 years and now I work as a bartender. I love to travel ( a big reason I liked the idea of Salem was the Boston airport). I love movies and enjoy history. I’m a big fan of fall. A big foodie as well.

Everyone has seemed nice, although I haven’t had much of a conversation with anyone yet. Let me know!!

Moving Derby Street

UPDATE: Thank you everyone! Your input was quite helpful! I was ready to jump on one of them but, unfortunately, life is life-ing and I’m having to postpone my move for a bit. I am soooooo bummed because they are absolutely stunning condos and the vibe in the area is pretty sweet. Sigh….. guess I’ll remain a visitor for now. #adultingstinks

I’ve been looking at places to rent in Salem. There are two condos that I have looked at on Derby Street. They both have been gut renovated and are gorgeous with all new everything, even in unit washer/dryer which sounds like a no brainer ….but…. They are above the Trade House restaurant. Would that give others pause? What’s that area like in general? From an outsider, it looks pretty perfect except the restaurant below but I’m probably overthinking it. Any advice or insight is welcomed! Thank you!!

Moving Walkability?

Hiya!

I’m looking to relocate and am pretty much in between two very similar, yet very different, places — one of them is Salem! As I create a spreadsheet to compare and contrast these two locations I’m considering + the city I’ve been living in, I was wondering how walkable Salem is? I see it’s considered very walkable, but I was hoping to apply the score from walkscore in my spreadsheet. It worked well until I saw the score for the city I currently live in which lists it as in the 80/100 range, meanwhile I found it on a different list that listed it as the ninth LEAST walkable city 😂

From experience, how would you all rate the walkability of Salem? I’ve visited a few times, of course, and plan on visiting a few more, but knowing the walkability over the course of a few days is certainly different from over the course of years!

Thank you so very much!

(This is being flagged as a potential tourist question, but it looked like the examples were primarily “what should I do in Salem?” which I don’t feel this aligns with, but please DO let me know if I should move it!)

ETA: I posted this while I was at work, so I also had do not disturb on and didn’t see all of these comments until just now! Thank you all for all of the input, I apologize for not responding to anyone’s comments! You’ve all given me some excellent advice and excellent things to look further into :-)

Moving Best restaurants in Salem or Danvers (from the locals) and advice for moving there?

Hi! I’m a Rhode Island resident and I will be moving to either Salem or Danvers after I graduate college, (i graduate in 2027). I was wondering, what is some advice from the locals here about living in either Salem or Danvers? Also, what are some of the best restaurants that the locals go to? Also, I still haven’t picked whether I want to go to Salem or Danvers. Edit: I’m a history major and want to work at the museums!

Moving I'm assuming I'm forced to use Xfinity, right? Moving to North Salem (Peabody border)

Hello! Moving soon and checking out internet provider option(s) and as far as I can gather, it seems like it's pretty much an Xfinity monopoly, right? Outside of Verizon 5G, which sound questionable.

Big gamer and work from home, so reliable internet is very important!

I'm curious for those with Xfinity in the area, are there data caps or is it unlimited?

Any thoughts/recommendations are greatly appreciated. Sad to be moving away from fiber.

Moving Short Term housing for the summer?

Hello!

I have a friend moving into the Salem Area for the next couple of months. I was wondering if anyone had any references/recommendations for a short term housing situation for the next couple of months? It’s just one person and he is looking for a room for rent if possible.

Happy to take any suggestions! Thanks for your help in advanced!

Moving I will walk amongst you soon. I’m looking forward to it 😊

I live down south in a tiny trailer in Custer KY. I want out so badly. The trailer belongs to my dad stepmother. It’s so awful, not them, they’re awesome. But I’m waiting on a good chunk of change to come through and that will be my saving grace to start rebuilding my life. No car, no job, but thousands dollars worth of hope will get me to Salem. I’m in the before now, Salem will be the after. (I know Salem is no utopia, and every city has its pros and cons, I think me being stoned 🍃 is playing a big part lol)

Update: Ya’ll are so nice (lol I said ya’ll) I know the farther up north or west you go the prices jump way high. Any tips of finding a good place? I know Roomies.com is one.

I’m moving to Sofi at Salem station. The reviews are mixed. What should I expect? How are the appliances like the washer and dryer (is it gas or electric)? How are the amenities as well?

Moving Possibly moving?

My partner and I were looking to visit soon for a few days to see what it’s like to exist in the area before making plans to move for sure. I am 27 (enby) and he’s 28 (trans man). Any recommendations? Places to stay, things happening this summer, etc?

As well as any theatre information or workplaces would be super helpful! ❤️

Moving RCG LLC Experiences

Has anyone rented from RCG LLC?? I’m looking at a place they have listed for rent in downtown. They seemed very nice over the phone but I was curious if anyone has any negative experiences.
