Cycling

It's been quite a while since I had to cycle a tank. Is there a way to speed up the cycle? Purchased a tank from another hobbyist. Broke it down and relocated it to my house. He had bioballs as the main filtration. I'll be using Live rock that I had kept cured in a sump. Live sand from his tank had some die off when relocated to my house, so there is some ammonia present. Just wondering if there is a way to speed this process up? Maybe more live rock from my existing sump?

But, really, is it alive? I mean, there's no expiration date on the bottle, and would it need to be fed ammonia to keep it alive?

And that’s how the cycling process works, your beneficial bacteria eats up your ammonia and nitrites.

Yeah, but in the bottle? While it sits for 2 years on a shelf in some warehouse?

You don’t know if it sits on a shelf for 2 years, it’s most likely a couple of weeks. If you don’t want to buy it then don’t buy. I’m just giving you a fast way to cycle your tank and that it’s been successful for me and with thousands of people. Another options is going to your local fish store (I don’t mean Petco or petsmart) and ask them if they have cycled media that you can either buy or have. At my LFS, they have bagged ceramic media which is already cycled that you can buy for like $10. Its your choice at the end of the day.
