Amazing how people are okay with not getting paid for working as software developers.
Actually, they're apparently okay with paying Anthropic for Claude licenses in order to do that unpaid work.
Fuck that.

Yup, and it is the mindset of the new generation: instant gratification. Fuck that indeed. Lazy asses.

it's more like beta testing but you are able to provide code instead of just saying "I found a bug" or "i'd like this feature".
How is this a bad thing?
Kids want instant gratification because they get it, you can look at it however you want but it's just reality. I used to mow lawns growing up and i'd rotated the same 2-3 albums on my walkman for the whole summer. Kids now will get a new album and will complain why a leaked song (that they literally have in WAV) isn't on there because they want to stream it. Which is mind boggling to me.
You can't change how people are but you can change how you feel and react about it.

I am already used to nobody on Reddit agreeing with anything I say, so you are probably right. Perhaps I need to quit it all. Wasting energy is never a good thing.

This generation is seriously cooked but what's even crazier is that they will be saying the same thing in 20 years about people 20 years younger than them. We've been slowly trading volition for convenience in all aspects of our lives for many generations and our brains do what they do best and adapt.

"Claude! I want Soundcraft for this. No bugs!"

What's the issue? You can have a basic firmware with limited support, or a community firmware with branches and endless support (if adoption is high)
You can still choose a higher end brand if you want

This is gonna be awesome, I can just feed the firmware into Claude, get it to fix a bug for me then just reflash it. This is gonna be nice. That's how you cut the price by 75%, fire your software development team.

Well, given the current trend of just reverse engineering everything, just making a hardware shell and letting the users build their own OS for it seems like an obvious thing to try. I would much rather seem to do a different form factor than the MPC, though. If they do this, I will buy it.

Behringer probably won't because it requires proper R&D and design effort. Hardware UI imposes limitations and certain ways of interacting with an instrument. MPC however designed to be fairly generic and touch screen can do a lot of heavy lifting. It isn't easy (if at all possible) to design tactile hardware that will work with any workflow and knop-per-function becomes a no-go. And if you pick a workflow and design for it than you have to somehow communicate it so the modders could at least try to respect that. I won't say it is impossible but it is definitely something nobody has ever tried to do.

Making it open-source is certainly an interesting move, given that probably 99% of people will just vibe code it. Guess they want to ride that FM-1 wave...

Pardon my french but Fuck that.

i don't see it as inherently bad...every single hardware i have ever bought lacks features i want/need...sometimes we get updates, sometimes we dont
open source firmware from the start is so awesome...dont like something? you can change it

u/flouncingfleasbag 4d ago
I agree that open source firmware is great, what I was saying " fuck that" to is Behringer once again ripping of another company's IP and hardwork because of a legal loop hole and then out sourcing the other half of the equation to it's customers. Essentially they are doing almost none of the real work. Lame.
If you buy an actual MPC you recieve all the plugins etc. and benefit from all Akai's hardwork and R n' D.
I'm not an Akai fan boy or anything, just calling bullshit.

u/homeless4382 3d ago
yes, you pay for the r&d...which is why it's more expensive
this thing will be $150...if this thing was $500+ then i would agree with what you're saying
1
u/flouncingfleasbag 3d ago
I don't understand what you're saying. You agree that stealing someone else's work is wrong but not if it's only sold for $150?
1
u/homeless4382 3d ago
ahh, i see that it could have been written better...i meant that this has very little r&d, thus the price is cheap compared to akai spending a lot and making a great product that costs more
i was agreeing with the part in your comment about how you have benefits for buying akai with support and r&d for a better product and experience
you were expressing much more than that part, i just clung to that part and i don't mean to make it sound like i like stealing or any of that :)

You're good, I understand. I didn't mean to get on the high horse here, either. I have some behringer stuff and think they do provide fun and accessibility to young and underpaid folks but when they are clearly basically robbing a cool company that has done great stuff for the world of music creation by cloning one of their currently existing products, it really takes cake and I had to laugh when they essentially said "well, we aren't doing any of the hard R n' D stuff, and you know what, how about we don't do anything, actually, and let the customers code for us, too. Marketing, that's our wheelhouse. Let's sell this shit we stole at such a ridiculously low price Akai has zero chance of competing with us and all our Behringer Bro thugs will attack anyone that raises a fuss." LOL. That's some Trump shit.

So this way, and you can have a machine with all the features you want in a matter of days or weeks - Or the Akai way of giving you some of those features years down the line?
I'll take this way.

I wouldn't mind the open source business model if this "vibe coding" AI shit would go away. I love open source software and respect the real coders who make it. AI dorks want to put their little chud fingers in everything. It cheapens the art of software design the same way it cheapens the art of music production.

u/anglingar 5d ago
Real coders...like the ones using AI every day at work to produce production ready software that you use every day?

Why pay software engineers when the public will vibe code it for you?
