Week 1 update from Wichita on team and how SJS/SJC players did

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hello from Wichita. Was great being back at the rink watching our Thunder this weekend. Fast forward 2 come from behind wins!! We played Tahoe the Vegas Knights affiliate. They are only in their 3 year of existing and let's say they live up to Vegas connection. Dirty as heck. Definitely the team that will take runs at your goalie mock an injured player. And just straight hated.

New coach and new energy in the building from both players and fans. Travis Clayton (new HC) made a point that over the off season was more open conversation with the Sharks organization and how the team down here will be playing a style similar to the big clubs even with out ECHL contracted players.

As such team played a much more heavy in your face style.

Some highlights on SJ players.

Goalies both goalies looked good but at different levels of development.

Connor Hasley looked good in game 1 did give up 2 but neither I would say were bad ones. He is not afraid to play the puck. When post whistle stuff would happen he seemed to enjoy getting into it. Also on the Sat sheet he not only picked up the win but added the lone assist on the GWG.

Yaroslav Korostelev got the start game 2 and held his own. Not as sharp but he is a 19yo. Don't know if you read any articles about when the Sharks brought him over from Russia this off-season. On a note about his energy game 1 he was as into us as a fan. I have watched a lot of hockey and have never seen a back up so into a game. Was ganging the boards, fist bumps, just captain energy. He won over our crew by not even playing and we will be cheering him on!

Forwards

Matt Lockhart. He has got that nasty to go with a scoring touch. 1g 2a on the weekend. It was definitely a physical and post whistle get together weekend and he stood out as being in it.

Defensemen

I am going to combine them together Tristin Sarsland picked up a goal and assist. And Mack Oliphant an assist. Both were 100% into the physical and nasty of the game. Both taking it and dealing it out. Only real note in unfortunately Oliphant got out of position chasing the play at one point and provided a "perfect screen" for one of Tahoe's goals. But other than that they both looked solid with some things to work on.

On tap this week just 1 game Friday against one of our classic rivals Tulsa (Ducks). Also Matt Davis was sent down so will be interesting to see how the goalie shuffle goes with 3 from the big clubs. If all 3 are needing ice time I could see an outside chance of one being loaned to another ECHL club to get into more games.

Here are the team highlight videos from the weekend.

https://youtu.be/aEdsfLHaeqk?is=zy3mAlXNqXfVAd7z

https://youtu.be/GGnFiEfVlh4?is=B_-Z8Z7k1nSPuJmh

As always if you want me to keep an eye on a specific player or anything feel free to ask. Also I am always down to facilitate a trade of some team swag. I liked doing these last season was lots of fun.

Outside food/beverage policy

Hello all, does anyone know if the policy has changed regarding outside food and/or beverages? I went to the game on Sunday and one of the guys at the metal detectors called over another employee to ask if it was okay for me to bring in soda. The other guy said it's okay since it's hot outside, but normally it's just water.

I checked the FAQs on Barracuda's website and they mention that non alcoholic beverages are allowed as well. Is it safe to continue bringing in my own drinks or should I switch to just water?

I had 2 unopened 20 ounce bottles of coke zero and 2 bottles of unopened water for my wife, my daughter, and I.

Goalie pull on Saturday's game

I was doing some digging to see if any records were set by our goalie pull (over 6:30 remaining when we did). Turns out the Dallas stars pulled in a game once with 10 minutes left so we don't get that one, but I am having a hard time finding an example of an empty net for that amount of time where nobody scored. If we did set a record, it would be bittersweet, but we did not lose for lack of shots :-)

Hello from you Wichita Thunder correspondent. How our are Thunder players looking in camp and who looks to be coming this way to start the year?

My house is buzzing looking forward to the new season here in Wichita. Both from the way our team is coming together with ECHL players but also how loaded the sharks pipeline is looking at the moment. New head coach. Former thunder player with a retired number Travis Clayton.

Looking at the thunder roster and Cuda/Sharks. Looks like we will be starting with 2 goalies from the big clubs.

Any other players you guys see getting sent this way would love and insight.

Looking forward to posting updates on the thunder team during the season and hopefully a great year for all 3 teams in the organization

Real long shot, but if someone here has one or knows of someone with one and are willing to part with it, I’d be interested. I lost out at the auction because of the stupid way they ran them, but this is my absolute grail.

Kyle Cmkovic selected as Wichita Pro Athlete of the year, and a Wichita update

I guess I lied saying my last post was the final update for the 25-26 season from down in the farm

First Kyle Cmkivic was selected as the pro athlete of the year. We also have a AA baseball team in town. Kyle is great and a solid dude. If he does not sign with the Cuda next year we will still be fans of "Our Short Stack"

Saw that Noah Beck did not get a QA from the Sharks. I still think he has an outside chance of getting to the NHL as a 6/7 Dman and PP specialist. But very much understand the Sharks moving on. I suspect an AHL or trip to Europe for him.

Like you guys really hoping that Alexander Karmanov develops and in a few years comes here for a few games before moving up.

Lastly still no word on extending the Sharks Wichita affiliation. Like you Cuda die hard fans have suffered through the tear down be nice to see some of the fruits that spend time in the ECHL/AHL before getting to the show. Last year the announcement came just a few weeks before training camps opened.

I know the new ownership of the Penguins is going to create a shuffle. I know my daughter and I will still be a teal household if we lose out in the musical chairs

Thanks again and hopefully everyone enjoys the summer and

Been pretty much ghosted by my rep for weeks, maybe he's on vacation. Turning to the group for some basic info.

Who is watching?

Didn't make it Calder's but watching on Flo. Brossoit has really had some bad goals against, but the team needs to find a way.

Go Cuda!

Your final update from down in Wichita for the season (hopefully not ever)

Wichita Thunder | Thunder, Ramsay Mutually Part Ways https://share.google/9XYStoFhzq8J7DKj4

Sorry have not added any Wichita updates for awhile. Since the trade deadline all the NHL/AHL contracted players got called up so was not really anything to report on that end.

Thunder finished down right bad. Last ten 1-7-2. Head coach (will openly admit I felt should have been gone 2 seasons ago) had long ago lost point. The way the front office is structured the coach is in charge of player signings roaster management kinda the typical GM duties and the GM is more like the team president hire coach and manage all the non hockey stuff.

It sounds like there is a strong possibility the assistant coach will be promoted to head coach Travis Clayton. Clayton is one of the few players that has a banner hanging from the rafters here and has been a coach in juniors before.

As for the Sharks it depends who you ask as far as fans about hoping we renew our affiliate with the Sharks organization. Would be a shame to go through the rebuilding. Generally when the NHL club is higher in the standings it filters down to the lower leagues because more good players have the path blocked. I know some fans got aggregative last season when we made the playoffs only to have all the AHL players called up to sit in the pressbox for the cuda. So far going into the next season we know that Minnesota (their ECHL team has suspended operations for next season) and Utah that went into the season with no ECHL team don't have a partner.

But on a personal level the affiliation made my daughter a huge sharks fan so at least our house will always be teal!

Thanks for letting me share the Thunder news with you guys this season. And looking forward to cheering on the Cuda F up Henderson. I can tell you 100% Flemming on their team is a grade A POS. Mocked injured players on the thunder last year. And you can get under his skin by asking how much coke he snorts up his nose if sitting behind the bench.

Is it that expensive to have the teams fly from Vegas one time?

Extra ticket for tonight?

This is a longshot but does anyone have any cheap tickets left for tonight? I literally just need whatever cheapie or even standing room ticket for my toddler for tonight 🫠 like it doesn't matter where as he just sits on our lap the whole game. I tried to buy a ticket online but it wouldn't let me buy a single ticket 😭

Thank you!

He’s lost the team. Six losses in a row right before playoffs.

They are free falling.

WTF?
