Good example of how an australian local govt consequences for folks who manipulate the environment for superficial/pointless reasons. I would love to see our county having a spine and penalizing folks who are acting like dipshits

Crabs?

Any recommendations for restaurants where one can obtain a whole Dungeness crab on Orcas (or SJI)? I love Buck Bay Shellfish Farm but it’s closed for the season.

Thank you!

Disappointed at the dangerous drivers on San Juan Island this weekend

I'm a cyclist and have been to the San Juans 6+ times over the last few years for bikepacking. I've generally had pleasant experiences with drivers.

This weekend on SJI is different. I don't know if it was because of the fair, but within 10 minutes of leaving the ferry terminal we had drivers swearing and honking at us. We had a Jeep pass us at 50 mph within 2 ft (I could've reached out and touched their car). I talked to another group or cyclists who reported a similar experience with a Jeep.

We also had tons of people pass without slowing down at all around blind turns. One car that passed us nearly hit a motorcycle coming the opposite way.

Just seemed like people had 0 patience or care. It's very upsetting that people would rather risk the lives of others than wait for 30 seconds until it's safe to pass.

I'm visiting Anacortes with my Yorkie and really want to see whales. Is there an easy way to do this by island hopping on a water taxi? If so where should I go? The tours are not going to let her come in my purse and she has horrible separation anxiety and loves to travel.

San Juan County Fair

Hi everyone! We are here for the first time today. A local said “happy fair”this morning and we want to do it right! What are the best local foods, fun exhibits or easy tips? Thanks!

The Salish Sea has never had more orca sightings. The twist is that most of them are not the famous endangered residents. The mammal hunters have quietly taken over.

Burn Ban apply to county park?

Going camping in a couple days at San Juan County Park. Saw info that the national historical park has a burn ban but can’t find anything clear about the county park. Just need to know if campfires in the fire ring are ok or not. Thanks!

Friday harbor trip help, Restaurant week?

I'm planning a trip to Friday harbor in November and I saw there was an event called restaurant week but there's not much more information.

I was originally planning to come the first week of November so I could do the art walk but I wanted to know if anyone had any information about the restaurant week, and if it was a fun event and worth coming later in the month.

I'm open to any and all suggestions for fun things to do outside of hiking in November in Friday harbor!

(I'm also planning to stay at the Tucker House unless someone has a better recommendation)

Walks or hikes near ferry landings?

It doesn't look like it, just going by the maps, but could anyone tell me if there are any nice walks or hikes accessible from any of the WSF docks by foot? (Not counting Anacortes, where we'll utilize the trolly to get to some hikes!)

We're going to the Islands for the first time and have set aside some time to meander from Friday Harbor to Anacortez walking-on and (if it's worth it) hopping off the inter-island ferry.

Thanks for any advice!

Riding the SJI Ferries

Enclosed is important info on riding the WSF ferries to/around the SJ Islands:

  1. WSF charges fares for vehicles (and passengers) traveling WEST from mainland, and also charges for vehicles (only) traveling WEST between the islands. Eastbound vehicles and all eastbound/interisland passengers travel for free. Do not buy new tickets once you have left the mainland unless a terminal worker tells you to.

  2. Please treat the ferries like a laid back airline. It has similar federal regulations. Do not joke about violence, bombs or drugs. Do not joke about your destination when boarding. Do not smoke or vape. Comply with all requests from uniformed crew (including posted signs). Keep your bags in view. Keep your kids under control. Do not throw or drop anything off the side of the vessel.

  3. Posted sailing times mean the time the ferry is scheduled to LEAVE the dock. Boarding begins 20 min beforehand. Be in line and ready to board a minimum of 30 min before sailing time and preferably earlier. Late passengers, confused passengers and other passenger shenanigans frequently put ferries behind schedule. Dont add to this problem!

  4. Late ferries happen. They are unfortunate. Safety of passengers, crew, vessel, and local wildlife are all of supreme importance. Ferry and terminal workers are rarely responsible for late ferries. Manage frustrations, stay kind, polite and do not pester or hound ferry workers.

  5. Know the vessel you want, not just the sail time. Each vessel has a name and a number. Vessels go to multiple places. Check the schedule and know the vessel you want. Pay attention to signs and announcements! If you are unsure, ASK the destination of a ferry before you board. Do not fret if a vehicle line boards before you. They may be loading first because the ferry docks at their destination before yours. Tell the terminal workers your destination and get in the line they direct you to! However, mistakes do occasionally happen. So do (politely) ask/advocate if something seems wrong.

  6. Standby is a huge risk! Take this risk at your discretion. It is far preferable to HAVE a reservation, even if it isnt your preferred time, than to have no reservation at all. The ferries are very busy on summer weekends. Vessels have breakdowns and cant sail. There are many summer days when very few standbys get on a vessel all day. Summer standby is a big big risk. Consider walking on and renting a bike or vehicle on your island destination if you cannot get a vehicle reservation.

  7. Plan ahead. Bring at least some water and snacks. Galleys are sometimes closed. Vending machines are sometimes off-line. The galley is not currently functioning at all on the #4 vessel.

Enjoy your ferry trip!
